4.0 out of 5 stars THE COVER BLURB DOESNT LIE, 29 April 2006
This review is from: Visitor Q [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
Being described as deranged makes me interested in a movie, though often I am let down. This movie is the real thing, perhaps the most outrageous movie ever made. Beginning with unnatural sex and continuing with a catalogue of unparalled perversity, Visitor Q will have you watching or turning away in disbelief. A documentary maker and his dysfunctional family interact in increasingly bizarre ways. The films follows the family members through violence to full psychotic breakdown. The narrative is perhaps not the main thing, it is an accumulation of shocking moments, that is filmed in realistic intensity on digital video. Be warned, this may be too much for some viewers, though recommended for the broadminded and fans of extreme asian cinema.

3.0 out of 5 stars SOLID ACTION MOVIE, 30 April 2005
This review is from: First Option [1996] [DVD] (DVD)
First Option is a good action movie that moves along at a fair pace, and there is not too much exposition. Basically the Hong Kong Customs have to work alongside the SDU unit, to crack a major drugs ring. There is no martial arts in this film, though plenty of gunplay and should keep actions fans entertained. The leads are played by Michael Wong and the beautiful Gigi Leung as SDU and customs respectively. Some of the acting is variable, but the film is not spoiled by this. Being Hong Kong legends you get a quality print with good extras, especially the always interesting commentaries from Bey Logan. All in all, worth a buy for action fans, especially at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars AT LAST!, 30 April 2005
At last I get to see videos and live footage of Stereolab, it is so rare to see anything by them on TV. I always buy new items by this band, and even though this a career overview, I could not resist. Three CD's of wonderful music and a DVD of promos and performances, stickers for the single releases, all make this one of the most essential purchases in years. The price also is fantastic, fans and newcomers should snap this up! Stereolab are one of the most original bands I have ever listened to and they are the best live band I have ever seen, so this is a vital collection. My favourites on the box set are Allures, Cybele's Reverie, Captain Easychord, Les Yper Yper Sound, Brigitte and French Disco, though there are many more delights.

4.0 out of 5 stars ADVENTURE SHINES THROUGH, 19 Oct 2003
Stereolab are the band I most look forward to, releasing new records, and as usual they have released a mini-album before a full length. With the sad news of Mary Hansen's death I wondered what the change would sound like. Her vocals are missed and are mainly replaced by Laetitia. The 5 tracks initially sound similar to Stereolab a few years ago, but with a few listens the hooks and grooves grow in pleasure. They are furrowing familiar ground yet with more skill and surprises. Tracks 2 and 5 are particularly good, and this mini is a must for Stereolab fans and people wanting something fresh and different.
