This was Elton's 21st studio album at the age of 33 ( hence the title ) and sees him collaborating with a variety of lyricists using Gary Osborne,Tom Robinson and Judy Tzuke as well as Bernie Taupin. The album is often overlooked probably due to following on from the middle of the road 'A Single Man' and the awful 'Victim Of Love' offerings..

It did have a couple of minor hit singles (the pop / radio friendly 'Little Jeannie' and the excellent 'Sartorial Eloquence') but was not, if I recall, a huge success in the UK although I did buy it on vinyl. That said it is a competent album and well worth revisiting. 'Never Gonna Fall In Love Again' is a great track.

Bit of an oddity. Easy enough to listen too but won't make many of my regular listening playlists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got a secret - Can you keep it ?, 24 Oct. 2014

I first encountered The Pierces as a support band for Lissie back in 2010 and they made both a visual and musical impact with their harmonies and engaging, if sometimes quirky, songs. They had just released 'You and I', probably their commercial breakthrough in the UK, and some of the more radio friendly tracks are great pop songs. '13 Tales Of Love And Revenge' is a less heavily produced album and contains its fair share of the more quirky songs. The album kicks off with the dark 'Secret' and moves on to the lyrically intriguing 'Boring' ( "Sexy boy, Girl on girl, Ménage à trois - Boring. Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin - Boring" ). The theme of the songs continues throughout the thirteen tracks.

Certainly worth a listen and a good insight to the roots of The Pierces music. Less commercial than 'You and I' and their latest release 'Creation' so be prepared for something different.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good cover version from Bellowhead, 3 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great free song from Amazon which is a cover of a Richard and Linda Thompson song (from their album of the same name) given the Bellowhead treatment and a great job they do with it. Bellowhead are not to everyone's taste (and having seen them live I was a bit disappointed in their show) but when they do it well they do it very well. If this is an indication of the quality of songs on their 'Revival' album then that mght be worth listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic British Movie - Sadly Neglected, 3 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Run Wild, Run Free (DVD)
Fantastic movie. I saw this originally in the cinema way back in 1971 where it was the supporting film (remember them ?) to 'Dads Army (The Movie)'. To a young boy of 12 it was a powerful, quite scary film and has remained a favourite over the years getting occassional play on TV (Sunday afternoon slots if I recall). This transfer to DVD is surpisingly good (it isn't perfect by all means) but having watched it again I appreciate what a classic British movie this is and what a stellar cast it has (Sir John Mills, Sylvia Syms, Gordon Jackson, Mark Lester (giving a heart wrenching performance) and Fiona Fullerton (almost unrecognisable).

Set on Dartmoor, beautifully filmed, actors giving strong performances and without any CGI it is well worth a watch. Emotional performance from Mark Lester (what a great child actor he was) and with some fantastic wildlife performances too (the kestrels and horses). I should have checked the credits for the 'No animals hurt in the production of this movie' disclaimer ! I am not sure they could make this film today.

I was left wanting to know more to the background of the characters (especially the emotionally repressed Sylvia Syms, where the heck Gordon Jackson works, etc). A British movie from the era when film making was all about the actors, story, location and scenery and not the green screen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris De Burgh acoustic - Well worth a listen, 3 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great track from Chris De Burgh originally from his very good album 'Into The Light' ( which paradoxically also brought us 'Lady In Red' which to many signalled the start of his demise from cult act to mainstream mediocrity ). This acoustic version is well produced and sung and a change from the original upbeat, faster album version. He is a great talent and was a great live act (check out "The Getaway" and "High On Emotion (Live from Dublin"). Maybe he still is but I have not seen him live for a number of years now.

Surprisingly pleasant song from the romcom 'Begin Again'. Kiera Knightly doesn't have the greatest voice in the world (nor do I by the way) but good on her for recording this and giving it a go. The film looks interesting from a trailer and may be worth a watch on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Free EP And a Great Inroduction To The Album 'Creation', 3 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Three great live tracks from the talented Pierce sisters. I have since bought the studio album ( 'Creation' ) and these three tracks are the backbone of that album ('Creation', 'Kings', 'Believe In Me'). Great harmonies and very good versions of the songs. As a free Amazon download how could it not get 5 stars ?
