4.0 out of 5 stars Back in Bust???, 7 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Rock Or Bust (Audio CD)
Now then as previously mentioned i am a big fan of the "classic" Bon Scott era of AC/DC and to be fair also of the Brian Johnson albums up to about the 1985 "Fly on the Wall" set.
After that despite still being one of the best live acts in the world , the recorded work for me well was more filler than killer if you get my drift and a few decent songs a side none of these late eighties/early nineties albums really stuck in the old musical memory bank.
2008 release "Black Ice" was a reasonable effort to be honest and its follow up?? "Rock or Bust" is the same, i like it and have enjoyed listening to it (the first three tracks are some of the best songs the band have produced in the last 30 years) Will it replace "Powerage" or "Back in Black" or "Let there be Rock" or even the seriously underated 1983 set "Flick of the Switch" in my affections no of course not but this is an enjoyable stab at prime time classic AC/DC and should be seen by fans both old and new as nothing more?
With Malcolm Young retirement due to ill health - many fans would probably welcome such a release simply to keep the boys going and who are we to argue?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey Ho !! lets go da brudders !, 16 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Mania (Audio CD)
I have owned this Ramones collection both on tape and then on CD since its first release and still play it today.

This is all classic stuff from start to finish and show the band in all thier glory, all the favourites are here people and are just simply grear fun anthems- short sharp and simple (but always catchy and tuneful!)
Never got to see the band live but this collection is a fine introduction to one of the most underated bands in the history of rock music - similar to Motorhead in many ways IMHO , a cool name to throw into conversation and always a cool t-shirt to wear (without actually listening to the band in many cases?) but never really achieved the world wide commercial succes that they deserved.

A big influence on many to be sure?

4.0 out of 5 stars grunge? maybe? but more classic rock these days?, 11 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Superunknown (Audio CD)
This is one of the better records to come out of the whole "grunge" scene from the early 90's, I was lucky enough to see Nirvana on their first UK tour in about 89 and I heard these guys for the first time around this time via a sub pop compilation I believe?
I saw these guys live only the once supporting Guns & Roses (don't laugh it was the early 90's!) and although good were not a patch on this monster of a record.
The sounds on this album revel in the classic rock sound so favoured today, clear influences abound, Zeppelin, Sabbath, plus the punk rock ethos that affected the entire so called "grunge scene". Big tunes Big hooks along with down beat lyrics a set of perfect anthems for generation X but today sounds every bit as classic as its influences.

I got into Mr Cash around the time of the release of volume 4 of this series of Rick Rubin produced albums and have never really looked back since.
My Dad gave me his vinyl version of live at san quentin a few years back as well and that classic recording along with the power and emotion of these recordings means that today I regard Cash as one of my favourite artists from across the many diverse genres of music that I listen to!
This album contains IMHO some of the man in blacks most memorable material but my personal favourite is the final track entitled "i am free from the chain gang now" which is both moving and inspiring at the same time, perhaps a testament to the artists own reflections on life at the time.
With his death shortly after the recording of volume four and the release of voulmes 5 and 6 after the sad event, it would be all to easy to get caught up in the morbid fascination that people seem to have with the lyrical meaning of this collection along with volume 4 and 6? Me? I dont truly know if he was singing to save his own soul but many many times over these last few years he has certainly helped to save mine!

4.0 out of 5 stars about time too????, 30 Dec. 2013

Now I have a confession to make regarding this particular band, up until a couple of years ago I never really got it! but for the dare i say casual listener or possibly interested listener then this compilation is well worth the money?
Long time and more die hard fans than me will discuss the actual content in greater detail and what should or should not be included but for me this is a really great introduction to one of this country's most underated and influential bands.
This kind of music transcends all genres and only wants to make me investigate more, which surely is the whole point?

4.0 out of 5 stars the lone wolf howls tonight!!!!, 16 April 2013
This review is from: Deguello (Audio CD)
Yeah, Yeah I know all about "eliminator", I know about that car, the videos, the girls, the beards but c'mon what about the real ZZ Top? I am talking about a band that before thier career exploded in 1983/84 with the aforementioned hit machine that was "eliminator" were little more than an underground almost cult band in europe and a band considered past thier sell by date in thier native America ( home state of Texas excluded!).
This 1980 release recorded by the band after nearly three years away from the studio is simply a classic! a finely grafted blues/rock record with a funky edge in places which for me is without doubt thier finest work along with the 1973 release "tres hombres".

A smooth, groovy record without any doubt "i thank you" , "cheap sunglasses", "fool for your stockings" a great cover of the elmore james tune "dust my broom" , nothing against "eliminator" it is a great record and brought the guys richly deserved success across the globe but the sheer class of this recording shines through nearly 31 years since i first heard it.

Ok? get it, Beards? check, sense of humour? check, great songs? check, top notch playing? check...

Deguello by the way is Mexican for "no quarter" I believe? some Alamo connection? Well the band show us no mercy with this record believe you me - now get yourself lowdown in the street!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars the final cut - it would appear so!!, 29 Mar. 2013
Now for me Pink Floyd finished with this record, with respect and not wishing to upset anyone but I have little time for the bands post waters output.
Although thier albums since this 1983 release have been pleasant enough musically, they in my opinion lack the bite of the bands classic 1970's work and the genuine creative spark that the band possesed during the early Syd Barrett years?

This album for me is the crowning achievement in the bands career, a cold, cynical but moving record that mirrors its author (Roger Waters) political and personal viewpoints on the world that he was living in back in 1983 and dwells heavily on the social and economic problems post Falkands war and pre miners strike/general climate of unrest in the country at that time.
This is basically a waters solo album , the rest of the band feature but are not involved in the writing/production process and this bares all the hallmarks of a swansong release from a group preparing to go its seperate ways?

The lyrics are both moving and stirring at the same time ( I defy anyone not to be moved by the track "southampton dock" ) and clearly demonstrates waters anger the impact war and big business had on ordinary peoples lives.
If you are of a certain age you will understand only too well what the theme of this record is and if you are not then you should still be able to relate to its themes of loss, paranoia and disgust?
We live in an age still of war and economic downturn and this record is as relevant now as it was 30 years ago...

5.0 out of 5 stars bad boy boogie for life!!!!, 24 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Let There Be Rock (Audio CD)
Well I first heard this monster of a record over thirty years ago now and it remains a simple classic piece of hard rock to this day!
From opener "go down" (apparently inspired by the bands encounter with alledged super groupie one "ruby lips" ) to the closing tribute to the larger lady that is "whole lotta rosie" this thing just rocks- to me it sounds like it was recorded live as it happened and the band left it that way as a testament to thier raw power and energy.
Dont really know if that was the case but whatever the process this record is one of the bands finest and like so much of thier early output is pure classic material that remains essential.
With so many great tracks -hard to pick a favourite so I am not even going to try, the whole thing is just that good....

5.0 out of 5 stars Replica but never redundent???, 17 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Trout Mask Replica (Audio CD)
Now like everyone has already said , this album is one of the most controversial and openly discussed sets in the history of recorded music?
Is it blues? is it free jazz? is it even Rock? - everyone has got an opinion, mine? well as you seem to be asking for it? (by reading my review?) to me this record sounds like no one else other than its creators, a truly stunning and original piece of music that divides opinion but really seems to matter to those of us in the know?
This album does seem to belong to some kind of exclusive club, if you get it then you are in this club? if not then dont feel too bad because you are not going to be alone!

The music contained on this disc is at times chaotic, at times bizarre but never ever dull.

With some 28 tracks on offer , most barely lasting above three minutes- this record requires concentration but is one of the most individual pieces of work created and along with its follow up? release "lick my decals off baby" are two essential pieces of free thinking, bold and genuine groundbreaking music.

Captain Beefheart and the magic band - often copied but never equalled!!

4.0 out of 5 stars festival tastic!!!!, 12 Mar. 2013
This review is from: B-World (Audio CD)
Eat Static really come into thier own in the live enviroment and this wonderful disc provides all the evidence one might need to support this claim.
Recorded I believe over a number of gigs a few years back now this is what live techno is all about! I always found the bands studio output interesting and in places excellent but live the real twisted, warped energy that the guys produce shines through.
Seen these guys a few times live and this is a pretty clear reminder of those awesome nights and a fine testament to a band that never really broke out of the "festival" scene but would probably not have had it any other way!!
