A bit disappointing. I love Daisann McLane's articles in National Geographic Traveller, but this is not quite up there. Too much filling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superbowl History, 18 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent summary of Super Bowl history, from the very first up to 2012. Very few pictures, and they are both small and black and white. 'Ultimate' Super Bowl history is probably pushing it! But it makes a great appendix to the lavishly illustrated book covering Super Bowls up to 1990 from Simon & Schuste which I also have. Plain but detailed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the complete studio albums., 18 Dec. 2015
Great value for money. This box contains most of the great Columbia Davis studio albums, which include his finest works. BUT...be warned, there are three important albums, and one lesser, missing. 'Milestones' was the second Columbia album by the Coltrane group, the first with Cannonball Adderley on it; 'Sorcerer' and 'Miles In The Sky' are two of the five and a half albums by the sixties quintet with Shorter and Hancock. These albums are pretty much critical to the Davis catalogue. The Gil Evans collaboration 'Quiet Nights' is less of an omission. Also missing are a number of excellent live albums from the period. For any newcomer to Miles' music, this would make a great starter complimented by a few individual CD's. Shame about the main 3 missing, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Rattle than Ellington, 16 Oct. 2015
This review is from: Classic Ellington (Audio CD)
This is a decent enough recording of classical music with jazz influences. It is definitely NOT jazz, despite the presence of several great and good jazz artistes. Pleasant listening for an quiet evening in. For anyone who does want to know what Duke Ellington's music is REALLY about, there are a few hundred recordings available. Start with any of the great Columbia (Sony) recordings form the fifties, or the recordings of 1940 with Jimmy Blanton on bass which are considered among the greatest jazz tracks of all time. Any of these will show you why his peers rated Ellington among the all time greats.
The orchestra under Simon Rattle plays as well as any symphony orchestra could be expected to with music that is not symphonic in nature. Sound is excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Neither fish nor fowl!, 15 Sept. 2015
This review is from: Live With the L.S.O. (Audio CD)
I hate to be a spoiler, but this disc falls neatly between two stools for me, neither good jazz nor a good orchestral recording. There are very few really good orchestral jazz recordings, and this is not one of them. The orchestral writing is decent, but no more than that - the sort of thing any jobbing composer would knock off in a few minutes for an advertisment, or a soundtrack to an Attenborough documentary. The jazz, again is decent, but Brubeck recorded all of these pieces far better in a traditional jazz settting on countless recordings. Not one I will keep. For some really good Brubeck, try the classic 'Time Out' or 'Jazz: Red, Hot And Cool', or for the recent group, the birthday concerts on Telarc.

A History of the World Since 9/11

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, wrong title., 14 Sept. 2015
Well written book with a completely misleading title. This book is a fairly detailed analysis of seven events which happened after, and as a consequence of, the 9/11 tower attacks. In fact, 'Consequences' might have been a better title. For those of us who always believed that the Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq were a figment of the imagination, this book brings evidence to support that, although, in fairness, its one-eyed stance doesn't especially help. That is the one problem with the book; it does not have an air of even-handedness about it.
It was well written, and I polished it off on one go over a weekend. There is enough variety to avoid it becoming a continuous polemic against America. Very hard to argue against its basic premise; that America reacted like a headless chicken after 9/11.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good recordings, abysmal quality control, 15 Aug. 2015
Great recordings, decent sound quality. BUT...in two sets from different stores I had scratches on four out of eight discs, two of them at least rendered unplayable. It doesn't matter how good the CD's are if I can't play them!
A third set was fine, and the music is great. Five stars for content, one star for quality control, so three is about right overall.
