4.0 out of 5 stars up there as one of the strongest debuts in a long time, 5 Mar 2002
i first heard vex red when at the carling weekend last year. they were a small band(how they still are i dont know)playing the carling stage. well they weren't playing the carling stage, they were blowing it away. they had more power in their little fingers than those currently occupying the main stages and at once i fell in love with them. the power, emotion and just plain brilliance of the band shone through. i had to get more of them. the album, produced by the legendry ross robinson does not match their live form, but it is still one hell of an album, smeared in angst and sweat as the band tear through the 11 songs. live favourites cant smile and itch are the highlights, mixing raw emotion with tantalizing lyrics and smashing guitar riffs, while clone jesus is also a great track. the album also offers a more sincere side to it with bully me, which, although lacking in musical depth, is still a beautiful song. the album also contains some of the b sides to the 2 singles, with start with a strong and persistent desire a personal favourite. the album has been compared to the lkes of linkin park which is unfair. terry abbott manages to avoid becoming the cliche which has dogged the band as a nu metal act, as they are certainly superior to the american drivel filtering over the atlantic. the last single, cant smile just missed out on the top 40, but i hear that the album should make the top 30. so at least there is some comfort in the fact that this wondrous band, possibly the best live act to come out of the uk in the last couple of years since muse will come to the forefront of the britush public and not only the hardcore fans hear such a marvellous talent. u must buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the finest debut in a while, 5 Feb 2002
This review is from: Coldlight of Day (Audio CD)
they share the same haircut, they share the same lyrical genius, they share the same emotion in singing, they share the power and intensity of their music. who are they. why of course its halo and the smashing pumpkins. as one great band leaves we are presented with a band who combine the same formula that once made the pumpkins the biggest band on the planet. graeme sings with as much power and emotion as billy corgan ever did, and his lyrics easily match them. in a time when only a handful of bands are giving us truly exciting music, you would think halo had been going for 10 years. the melodies match the power, graeme's stage presence is immense and the debut single from the band eclipses all that the still here ep promised. raw emotion is in abundance as the band tear through the single and two b sides in less that 9 minutes. each song equally balances out with the previous and we are left with THE band to look out for in 2002. you must buy this single!

5.0 out of 5 stars the essential album of 2001, 6 Dec 2001
This review is from: Finelines (Audio CD)
my vitriol, the most exciting and innovative band to grace my ears since nirvana or the smashing pumpkins have come up trumps with this lp. it has always been my view that in order to be rated as a classic album, each song should have its own style and that not one should be any better than another. this album succeeds in that. from the anthemic always:your way, the rocking losing touch, or the wonderfully melodic pieces, not one track is at fault. som and the gang have already, after only being around a couple of years, managed to master the art of the live performance, with astonishing results. infectious records have a habit of finding new refreshing bands, and they have certainly found one here. dismiss the travis onslaught, the stereophonics snoreathon or the snarling of oasis, this is the band all of britain should be supporting, making them as big as the beatles. after all they deserve it. you may have heard the hype, believe all of it. this is astonishing stuff. not even the white stripes or the strokes match their raw energy. this is the album of 2001
