4.0 out of 5 stars US involvement in south america, 19 Nov 2012
This review is from: The War On Democracy [DVD] (DVD)
i found this to be informative on the subject of US foriegn policy in central and south america. it is a little bit "talky" and could of benfited from more documented footage, but it is worth seeing just for the former head of cia operations opinions on the US policy at the time. good

Disturbing the Peace (Vintage Classics)
Disturbing the Peace (Vintage Classics)
by Richard Yates
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars my introduction to richard yates, 1 Dec 2009
i saw revolutionary road at the cinema, and to be honest before this i had never heard of mr yates or been familiar with his work.the idea that people leading comfortable lives are not necessarily any happier than the less fortune of us seemed an interesting idea.so i decided to further explore the fiction of Richard Yates. Being familiar with revolutionary road through the cinema i decided to read Disturbing the peace. i found this a very good read. John Wilder a man with a good, well paid job, a devoted and loving wife and a small son. seemingly in an ideal position in life.To me it showed me how mental illness and addiction can happen to the best of us. This book had very good characterisation, i found that i could picture the people and the environment they inhabited very clearly in my mind. i found John Wilder despite all his faults to be a sympathetic character underneath his mental illness. As i said the appeal of Richard Yates work to me was how we can view other peoples lives against our own when we see them on a very superficial level and not see the pain that these people can possibly be in.There are John Wilders all around us and his story is probably more relevant now in the twenty first century, then when it was written.
For me the book lost something when he became involved, albeit unsuccessfully with Hollywood. i found that John Wilder lost a bit of that everyman quality he had about him. that said i was very impressed with this book and the simple but effective ending will stay with me for a very long time. i look forward to catching up with the further works of Richard Yates in the future.

2.0 out of 5 stars if you like having your intelligence insulted!, 6 July 2009
This review is from: Flightplan [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
i sat down to watch this last night, for about the first hour i was engaged. jodie fosters daughter goes missing on a plane. No one on board the plane that was carrying in excess of 400 people remembers her daughter being present.jodie foster is carrying back to the states the body of her husband.it appears that her daughter was also killed in the accident.at this point i was enjoying the film. a delusional women on the verge of mental breakdown cant accept that her daughter has gone.as she searches the plane for said daughter her behaviour is one of a women close to mental collapse. up to this point i was enjoying the film. what happened to her husband? her daughter? then hollywood got hold of it, we must have a happy ending. but it makes no sense!this could of been a very good film but it was ruined by the hollywood treatment. the film looks good, but that doesnt make up for a poor film. that seems to be a sign of the times. impressive cinematography to hide the flaws in the film. and some of the cast were terribly miscast. peter skarsgaard was very menacing and appeared a bit deranged in the film "boys dont cry". but in this he was awful.

Cocaine Nights
Cocaine Nights
by J. G. Ballard
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.79

4.0 out of 5 stars cocaine nights, 8 Jun 2009
This review is from: Cocaine Nights (Paperback)
i enjoyed this book. the plot was quite implausible, but non the less i still found it a good read.
the ultimate goal for a lot of people is to have un limited leisure. how many people wish that there numbers come up on the lottery? the reality seems to be that if you do not have enough to occupy your time, you will decend into a bored waking coma.this seemed to of happened to the ex pat community in estrella de mar.the book goes to show how new experience can jolt us out of our torper. i liked the idea that activities that went on had got neighbours out and interacting with each other and help generate a community spirit again and helped rejuvenate the resort. i liked this idea and found it resonably plausible, but a majority of the ex pat community descending into a shared world of crime, pornography and murder i didnt. but on the whole if you can suspend belief, you will find this an enjoyable read. this was my first j g ballard book and it will not be my last.

having added Engleby by sebastian faulkes to my wish list, i was recommended this book by amazon.i had a quick look at the reviews and decided to buy it.i managed about twenty pages. the grammer in this book is terrible and very poorly written. "Lewis picked up his things" not his belongings. i had read the first line and new i had made a mistake.it is well presented and the cover is what swayed me to buy it, but it is now going down the charity shop. very poor

3.0 out of 5 stars white noise, 24 Feb 2009
this is the first Delillo book i have read and it will not be the last.i found this book quite enjoyable. there was not much of a story, but it was something different. i found the writing managed to shape clearly difind characters in my mind. this book was very funny in parts, but i found some aspects of the story hard to swallow. i liked the way that the chapter dealt with the disaster. instead of getting bogged down he swiftly dealt with it by glossing over what could become tedious and then moving on with the story. i have heard that he has written superior books to this and i hope to read them but this was a nice introduction to his work.

A Confederacy of Dunces (Essential Penguin)
A Confederacy of Dunces (Essential Penguin)
by John Kennedy Toole
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars modern masterpeice, 29 Dec 2008
i have just finished reading this book today and this is probably one of the most original novels i have ever read. great characters that develop over the length of the novel. ignacious is probably the greatest anti hero in modern literature that i have come across. a novel ahead of its time. a shame because the end set things up for the further adventures of i. j. reilly, that is a book sadly i will never get to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars get caught on the wire, 28 Aug 2008
i have very nearly finished watching series one, this is very good television. i am glad i read the other reviews before i brought this box set.it does take a few episodes for the story to warm up, i think iwas at episode five before i could see what all the hype was about.i have enjoyed the wire and at some stage i will invest in series 2 but i still feel that the sopranos for me was a better experiance

good television drama, well worth the price

4.0 out of 5 stars rabbit run, 10 April 2008
this is the first book i have ever read of john updikes.i cant say i enjoyed reading this, but i dont think i was meant to. the main protagonist harry " rabbit" angstrom is probably the most self centred and morally repugnunt individual i have ever read about, but that is the beauty of this book.you feel yourself appalled at rabbits moral bankrupcy.
you forget that he is a fictional character.this is a beautifully written book.for all his faults i think i might end up reading the futher adventures of rabbit.he may be self centred, but he is an interesting read.
