2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 27 Sept. 2015
This review is from: Every Open Eye (Audio CD)
Very disappointing. I have loved everything Chvrches have released up until now, they have been a real breath of fresh air in the music of the last couple of years. Their first album is fantastic, the best album I'd heard for a long time.

This follow-up is a very half-hearted affair, with boring production, uninspired tunes and almost all of the songs sounding exactly the same as each other. If you're expecting anything even close to as good as their first album then sorry, you'll need to think again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Kodak alternatives but worthwhile, 25 Sept. 2015

HP5+ has always been the poor cousin of Tri-X for me, and I even prefer T-Max 400. In contrast, for lower ISOs I love FP4+. HP5+ is grainier and has less contrast than Tri-X, but that's not a huge problem with digital post-production and DSLR-scanning. My recent use of this film has proven rewarding, but I don't think I'll ever prefer it to the two Kodak alternatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Ryan Adams album for years, shame he doesn't write songs like this any more, 25 Sept. 2015
This review is from: 1989 (MP3 Download)
This is the best album that Ryan Adams has released for many years. Though not up to his standard of the early 2000s, it just goes to show how much his song-writing and Cardinals-era return to the awful influence that is country music have negatively impacted his music in the last five years or so. With this album he goes back to the feeling of albums like Demolition or Heartbreaker. I'm no great fan of Taylor Swift, but in the hands of a real musician like Ryan these songs are made to shine. Ryan takes the songs and adds real emotion and energy to them and if you didn't know better you might even believe some of them are his own. You have to wonder why, when Ryan can do this with her songs, her versions are completely devoid of feeling or sentiment.

Now if only Ryan could go back to writing great, heartfelt songs of his own and producing them without the horrible country music influence that preceded his solo career and unfortunately returned in his Cardinals period. Then he'd really be onto something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great small wide prime, 2 Sept. 2013
I had wanted a small, wide-angle prime for my DSLR for some time, and options are very few indeed. Outside of Pentax and Fuji, even fewer.

I decided on the 21mm as less expensive and a better all-round focal length than the 15mm. 21mm is a good focal length - not so wide as to cause distortion or leave subjects looking very small, but wide enough to capture a whole scene. It may not be wide enough as a travel lens where you want to capture wide scenes in streets with limited space to back up.

The lens is very small, extremely well constructed in metal and a pleasure to use. Image quality is very good - it could be sharper at f/3.2 but is very useable. It can sometime produce yellow_green flare when pointing at the sun. There is some barrel distortion which is visible when taking photos of buildings or other structures with straight lines, but it's easily corrected later (some cameras can do it automatically). However, I'm happy with the IQ it produces, it's certainly better than the 18-55mm kit lens. I wish it were a little faster (f/2.8 or better), but I suppose this would mean it had to be larger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ISO 400 film, 24 April 2013
This is my favourite colour 400 film. Kodak Portra is finer-grained, but the colours from 400H are better. Many people deliberately over-expose this film by a stop (or more) which can produce nice shots in the right conditions, but I prefer the darker, moodier tones of it shot at box speed.

Interestingly, my results from this same film on 35mm have not been so nice, I'm not sure why.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most wonderful film, 24 April 2013
This is the most wonderful film I've tried so far. The colours it produces are amazing, and the grain is very fine. It captures subtleties that escape other films and digital. It's a great shame that it's not available in 35mm. I think it's considerably better than Portra 160.
