2.0 out of 5 stars All-too-familiar storytelling and characterization, 15 Sept. 2014
This review is from: Divergent [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
I have very mixed opinions about this story. The tense atmosphere amongst the divided factions works well, but the romance is incredibly predictable and unnecessary.

Woodley strongly asserts herself as Tris, someone who defies conformity and is shown to be very brave in harsh times, but I felt that the (budding) connection between herself and 'Four' (Theo James) was forced and only there for the contrivity of having the two lead characters get together. He makes sense as her brooding mentor, but I question if anyone would have been so interested in Tris and Four getting together had Mr James not been British or so attractive. Don't get me wrong, he's fine as the generic action lead male, and I can see why he was chosen (despite being much older than the actual book character) but his swift change to being her love interest did not work for me.

The other problem with DIVERGENT is that it doesn't bring anything new to the table in this era of Young Adult adaptations, it merely depicts those same cliched ideas already covered in a vast majority of movies and television shows. A basic summary: the lead female character longs to break free from a world she does not relate to and be with her brooding boyfriend who is burdened by daddy issues. Nevertheless, it's that same storyline that seems to draw in big box office numbers, so somehow, the younger generation's enthusiasm to see the same storyline over and over again amongst different movie franchises keeps these YA series popular in the media.

Some pros of the movie: the energetic score, which elevates the pace and emotion of the film; Tris' inventive ways of escaping the hallucinations; and the down-to-earth dynamic of the Prior family - although even this was marginally ruined by how the parents' journeys reach their conclusion. The underground feel of the Dauntless faction also works well, as does the superior styled setting of Erudite.

DIVERGENT is an average film - it is not horrendous, nor is it of a high quality. It doesn't help that the characters (and the actors' portrayals of them) are more robotic than deep. A lot of recycled ideas and characters, which didn't hold my interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Woodley and Elgort are phenomenal. Amazing chemistry and performances, 15 Sept. 2014
Award-worthy performances, palpable chemistry between the lead actors, and poignant storytelling make this one of the most powerful film adaptations of this decade.

Woodley and Elgort put their strongest efforts into these roles, and it shows. They are an extremely rootable and dynamic couple. The characters they play who form a connection - symbolically, at "The Heart of Jesus" - are very complex and likeable people who are burdened by such a tragic disease that threatens to limit their life experiences. Instead of dwelling on the worst aspects of what happens to them, they choose to make the best of what life has to offer, and it's such an inspirational thing to observe.

Supported by a talented cast (including Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe in memorable and poignant roles), this is a spectacularly made film that is well paced and has a fantastic soundtrack to evoke all the emotions as one will have felt whilst reading John Green's book. Excellent film-making, TFIOS gets my highest praise.

My only question is, when will the EXTENDED Edition be available in the UK?

Happy to say this is a beautifully written third instalment in the series. Focuses on the past and present times of Cash and Tess' relationship, which tragically ended years ago due to a devastating incident that forced them apart. Pleased that much-loved characters return - particularly Nate and Christine Desantro, who are happily married and make it their mission with "Pop" (always a positive and entertaining character!) to reunite Cash and Tess. I won't say if they succeed, but I will say that the journey of the characters is - as always - well-developed, emotional and ultimately satisfying.

Bring on 'Fall', the 4th Family Affair novel. Sadly another long wait, but I'm sure it will be worth it!

Have never experienced any problems with this Kindle. The set-up was relatively quick and simple. Fantastic selection of books (for either purchasing or borrowing from Amazon Library) and they download to your Kindle within seconds.

Unlike a mobile phone, this device does not need to be frequently charged up BUT here's a tip: switching from Wi-Fi to "aeroplane mode" - if you don't need to connect to the Kindle Store - can help to save the battery.

Well worth the price. A definite recommend. A great Amazon product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sammi/Julz's plight and her courageous fight is a reader's DELIGHT!, 1 April 2014

A superb third instalment to the Gypsy Brothers series; an intense and erotically charged thriller with an explosive final act.

If you have read the first two books then you do NOT want to miss this one - the plot is really moving along with a purpose and the relationship between Jason and Juliette takes extremely surprising turns. Jason and Elliot are two very intelligent men and both of them are aware of the potential fate "Sammi" (Juliette) will face if she continues to follow this dark path.

Since book one ('Seven Sons'), many reviewers have shared conflicting opinions about Juliette's precarious lifestyle. Some of you think that her actions are outrageous and destined to fail. Well, Jason and Elliot (the great loves of Juliette's life) are smart enough to ask YOUR questions: Why would you submit yourself to a gang leader who abuses you for his own pleasure? Why not run far away before Dornan discovers your true identity? -- The answer is clear: Juliette will remain trapped in the past - in the memory of the horrific crime scene when her innocence was stolen - UNTIL her mission is fulfilled.

Yes, May 26th (are you kidding?!) is a hell of a long time to wait for the next book. Yes, the cost of these books is much too high given their length (and extremely unfair, as Amazon delayed the release of this book). Nonetheless, 'Five Miles' fully deserves five stars, and I'm a believer that QUALITY wins over quantity.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bizarre story of obsessive desire, no holds barred, based on true events, 16 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's a lot to be said for the content and message of this film. Led by two strong and brave performances, 'In The Realm of The Senses' shows two restless people with a raging sexual desire for each other, satiating their lust and rebelling against the norms and constraints of society. The two main characters are not sympathetic and they don't pretend to be. Everything revolves around their selfish and desperate need to be fulfilled by each other.

There is an interesting element of role reversal within the film, as the insanely jealous Sada becomes the female aggressor of the relationship, and the charismatic Ichizo eventually turns into her submissive. Both of them are both so deeply involved in their love affair that they let it consume their entire lives and it isolates them from everyone else. Nagisa Oshima does a wonderful job of creating an atmospheric yet claustrophobic setting in which Sada and Ichizo eat and sleep together. You can't even really judge their actions as a casual viewer, as it is based on real events. The infamous outcome of the film (and the real-life situation) is both tragic and oddly poignant.

It has been debated if ITROFTS is a mainstream take on pornography, masquerading as art. However, my understanding of the film is that these two people are curious about the limits of their ecstasy, and use sexual mind games to test their willpower, whilst being ignorant to the dangers of prolonging their twisted obsession. Natural onscreen chemistry between Tatsuya Fuji and Eiko Matsuda and their committed performances raise the film to another level.

Daring and thought-provoking, albeit slow-paced. Emphatic sex scenes (but not without purpose). 'In The Realm' is an unsettling, unique and highly memorable film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique, thought-provoking and deeply moving film, 16 Feb. 2014

This review is from: Air Doll [DVD] (DVD)
Beautifully acted and written, AIR DOLL is a fascinating depiction of a young woman who is reborn.

I have watched many films over the years and have never seen anything quite like 'Air Doll' before. Without being exploitative or crude, the film uses the image of a blow-up doll to explore themes of love, sex and isolation in a powerfully human way.

I was honestly reduced to tears by the end of the film. The final act is shocking and culminates the journey of a young woman who is ultimately searching for an answer - what does it mean to be loved? To be happy? To exist? She feels blessed with a physical change but she struggles to adapt to 'normality' and is endlessly seeking FULFILMENT.

I am thrilled to have discovered this film. Doona Bae gives an award-worthy performance as a character with a dual identity, and the story is truly touching (and relatable on so many levels).

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent sequel. I am addicted to this series!, 16 Feb. 2014

SIX BROTHERS is fierce, provocative, and a worthy second book in the Gypsy Brothers series.

I'm VERY pleased with the development of Sammi and Jason's relationship and how their backstory was explored. You feel how difficult it is for Sammi to stay trapped in her affair with Dornan whilst she is secretly in love with his son.

The characterizations are excellent. Lili Saint Germain does a great job, writing Sammi as a reinvented woman who is torn between her mission for revenge and wanting to tell Jason the truth about her identity. Elliot is a true and loyal friend to her. Jason is a confident and caring man who is passionately drawn to her. Dornan is creepily obsessed and uses violence as a way to assert his manhood. The behaviour of his other sons is equally repulsive.

Some reviewers have said that they don't like having to wait for each book to be released, but I think the author's decision to divide the series into 7 instalments is a smart one. Why? Because it keeps the reader in suspense and extends the plot of Sammi's revenge mission. It also allows for flashbacks revealing Sammi's past life, when she was the happy and uncorrupted JULIETTE.

Bring on Gypsy Brothers #3! I am highly anticipating what will come. The sexual tension and will they/won't they romance between Sammi and Jason is AMAZING!

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and terrific, with a beautiful romance, 11 Feb. 2014

An all-time favourite of mine. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan shine together playing different dynamics as two different couples - one who powerfully connect through email, and the other who are fierce rivals as they fight to maintain ownership of their bookstores.

The story is heart-warming and is located in the busy and attractive setting of New York.

Hanks and Ryan are magnificent together. It is rare to see two actors not only working together again, but also showing the ability to re-capture the same level of magic together. Tom and Meg's chemistry in this is just as natural and beautiful as it was in 'Sleepless in Seattle' - perhaps even more so in 'You've Got Mail', given that they share so much screen time together.

Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Steve Zahn also star in very funny and important supporting roles.

I would recommend the Blu-ray US Import. It has great special features, which include a three-way conversation between Nora Ephron, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as they share memories of making the film and there is an extra disc that plays the original romantic comedy upon which 'You've Got Mail' is based, starring Jimmy Stewart - 'The Shop Around The Corner'.
