This is just fantastic. Shirer was a war correspondent based in Germany before and during the war. After the war he wrote the first classic history "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich". But this diary is almost better. It is his day by day notes of living and surviving in Europe as Hitler came to power. In his broadcasts he may be a carefully censored war correspondent, but in these private notes he rages against the Nazi's and Hitler and the arrogant power of Germanism. He cannot believe the stupidity of the allies failing to see the coming threat. He bemoans the hollow-chested bespectacled insurance clerks from Liverpool, captured by the physically superior blonde Aryan youth. He despairs. He sees defeat. He bitterly complains about Churchill's lack of courage in not coming to the aid of the Norwegians. The balanced broadcaster is left behind. Here we have the coruscating criticism of a very angry man who has to report on the war and survive in Berlin with his wife and baby.
It is so readable. Read it!

A LITERARY MIDDLE ENGLISH READER.

Oops. Better explain this properly. I have this on Kindle and it really is a bit of a mess. Very difficult to navigate. But I feel I may have download it from a free site (Gutenberg?) rather than Kindle proper. So had to buy a very old (1915) hard copy which is brilliant. And it translates the more unusual words as footnote. A great anthology.

Complete Old English (Anglo-Saxon) (Teach Yourself: Level 4)
Complete Old English (Anglo-Saxon) (Teach Yourself: Level 4)
by Mark Atherton
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars England, my England, 11 Dec 2013

What a brilliant, readable book. It is a real (easy!) window into the beginnings of the English language. I find reading Old English is like seeing words carved in English oak by medieval church craftsmen. The poetry has a simplicity founded in peasant life living nature and its seasons. And this book (and the CD if you can get it) takes you through authentic scripts and hammers it home until you do understand. And its a lot easier to understand than the classic Sweets Anglo Saxon Primer.
(Note I managed to find the CD pronunciation guide separately. Most useful although the author speaks far to softly).
The book is still excellent on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alaska with a sparkle, 11 Dec 2013

This review is from: The Snow Child (Kindle Edition)
She writes so beautifully, so accurately. Alaska in the 1930's is cold and hard. As is the marriage of this couple who have just buried a baby. They escape from an extended family of women and warm babies and retreat to a life alone in the Alaskan outback. The coldness echoes their own souls. They isolate themselves in their individual griefs. Everything they touch is cold. The wife looks deep into the ice river wondering the coldness of death. Then there is the magic of snow and like children, for a moment they let go of their sadness and build a snow child. And perhaps the snow child become alive and lives on the fringes of their live accompanied by a fox. They make friends with a noisy family who show them how to survive and find joy in the purity of a new land. And the snow child? Does she melt. Well, you just have to read the book. You just HAVE to read the book. Sometimes so little is said, but Eowyn Ivey so accurately portrays hearts that are struggling to learn to love.

This is an excellent and thorough book. If I have the persistence to go through ALL the exercises, my grammar will be superb. I also find it very good just to revise particular problems - the subjunctive!?

The Collins visual dictionaries are fantastic for building a themed vocabulary. They are tremendous for, say, going into the bike shop and explaing exactly which bit of my bike "Ne marche pas".
The drawings are a bit smaller than the Dorling Kindersley equivalent, so I find I really need to read it in a good light - pref daylight. It is a super book

Really simple to use. Maybe not hefty enough to stop a determined professional, but works great to stop the casual passer-by and is a visible warning

This really is a beautiful edition at a very modest price. It is printed on tissue thin "India" paper and is a delicate dleight to handle. I am always impressed with the fine qulaity of books from this publisher. There is a real joy to be had in reading a facsimile edition of the Bible as it first appeared in this edition in 1611.
