5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional audio quality, 20 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can only agree with reviewer Mark, this is a superb audio only bluray. The SACD is only stereo so no comparison can be made with the multichannel surround on this bluray which is very well executed to the point of frankly stunning IMHO. Bluray sound engineers this is your benchmark. The 24/192 stereo is also very good.
As for the music it is modern jazz and may take a few listens to get into it. I'm not a jazz oficionado by any means but I'm sure if your a Patricia Barber fan you'll love it.
One minor disappointment is the fact that they did not include the track "The Fool On The Hill" that is on the SACD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD Audio, 10 Oct 2012
My review is of the HDAD DVD Audio. Please refer to others more detailed reviews of this album. Simply put it is a superb blues album - what I call a 'grower' as it just grows and grows on you. This is rated 280/500 on Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Like all HDAD discs this DVD Audio is stereo only with 2 studio master options - one 24bit/96KHz the other 24bit/192KHz. Both are superb. Recorded in 1963, the clarity of the sonics is exceptional with no sign of any tape hiss/noise. For audiophiles, it is also available as an SACD.
Play loud!
Highly recommended but be aware, it is becoming difficult to obtain in this format.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars? No it is not., 7 Sep 2012
I won't comment on the politics of the band members, lawyers, publishing companies, music industry etc.

So many have immediately given this 5 stars (many without ever seeing it). Why? The video quality of the Blu-ray is reasonable considering this was filmed in 1979. Long shots from the audience POV are very grainy but close ups of the band members are good. 3.5 stars perhaps.

The musicianship is superb and the audio is 24/96 on both DTS HD surround and LPCM stereo. I would give it 4 stars. Definitely worth ripping the stereo to a DS player although this is not legal.

Yes I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and for Supertramp fans I can understand this is a must due its historical reference as it gives you plenty reminisce on. It does look like they have pieced it together though, as most songs fade to black when finished with just the audience to be heard - this is usually indicative of the producer/engineer merging different parts of the concert film to create the illusion of one contiguous film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concerts but sadly mediocre DTS sound, 1 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On the plus side you get 2 good concerts most of which is based around the 2 Motown albums he made with a very good track list and some classic old songs as well.
So why would I say it has mediocre sound. Well I have both the Motown albums 1 + 2 in SACD format and Motown 1 on DVD-Audio and the sound is just stunning, if a tad over produced. In comparison this blu-ray is a weak affair and is not nearly on a par with the studio hi-res versions. If I wasn't aware I would say that the sound was a fairly average Dolby 5.1 not a 24 bit DTS HD MA soundtrack it claims to be. In comparison to say Chris Botti Live or Legends of Jazz with Ramsay Lewis this is sadly mediocre. Don't get me wrong video quality is perfectly good and MM puts in a great performance but the hi-res DTS soundtrack?? well basically I expected better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully made product, 13 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a quality well made product and comes highly recommended. In fact all the Carlisle Brass products I have purchased are quality made products. Forget the stuff that B&Q, Homebase and all the other DIY stores sell. I checked them all out and they were much inferior products and were in fact more expensive. Carlisle Brass handles are solid, have an excellent clear firm motion and spring back that gives you confidence that they will last.

No brainer.

BTW. If you are looking for the matching handle on a rose (its in a different collection) you are actually looking for the "Amarillo Lever on Rose" model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning SACD. This grows on you.., 13 Mar 2012

This review is from: Motown (Hybrid) (Hybr) (Audio CD)
Sound wise this SACD is just stunning. This puts your 5.1 system to the test and will impress. Ok some may say it is slightly over produced with bass that rocks the house but the more I have listened to this SACD the more I enjoy it.
I was never a huge MMcD fan but did enjoy the occasional track especially the Doobie Brothers tracks on which he was lead. This was the first solo album of his I bought and it motivated me to purchase the follow-up 'Motown 2' also on SACD and just as good.
I originally bought this on DVD Audio in 24/48. The SACD might have a slight edge but which ever version you have it does not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, quality product., 14 Nov 2011

Carlisle Brass make beautiful quality products that are far superior in build to anything you will buy at the 'usual' DIY stores where you will pay more for an inferior product. This is a solid, static (i.e. doesn't spin) weighty door handle which comes with a single central bolt. The bolt itself has three sections marked out so that it can be cut to an appropriate length (without damaging the bolt thread) depending on the depth of your door. I used a pair of pliers to cut the bolt to length. It is a simple classic design that will work well in contemporary and traditional setting. I purchased in chrome finish which looks fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars And in SACD format too, 11 Oct 2010
This review is from: Night Sessions (Audio CD)
I would actually like to praise this not just for the excellent musicianship and musical content but also the fact that this is also a top quality multichannel SACD. All the other reviews are correct but if you also want to add the cream get this in SACD format. It is superb. The multichannel mix has been thoughtfully put together and provides a perfect balance utilising all six channels. Turn it up loud. It comes highly recommended. Sorry short and brief but the other have already complimented the music better than me this is just to add a review of the SACD itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kind of Blue? With this mix YES!, 10 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What only 3 stars I hear you scream - well yes. This is one of the best jazz albums of all time so as far as performance is concerned we all know it is superb, 5 Stars. But the remastering is frankly very poor for such a classic standard. I would question if this was mastered from the master tapes and the engineer should be ashamed - did you actually sit down and listen to your final mix in a proper 5.1 system?. There is a complete lack of double bass. Where is the LFE (.1) channel content??? This album has a beautiful double bass most of which comes out the centre speaker but apart from hearing the notes there is very little depth or feel to the bass. The piano is poor also. The actual CD layer sounds better.

I also have the JSACD (Japanese SACD) version on Sony of this album and it is a much better. I would not purchase this Columbia SACD version - get the Sony version it is far superior.

Please don't judge this review with the "this is 'Kind of Blue' so always deserves 5 stars" mentality. I am purely reviewing the quality of the mastering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Line up, 2 Mar 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The video quality is excellent and the show itself has some fantastic guests and excellent arrangements.
But the sound is not the best. In comparison to Chris Botti's other live Blu-Ray "Chris Botti - Live With Orchestra And Special Guests" the Dolby TruHD sound track is somewhat dull and lacks the superb bass of this other offering. That said Its certainly better the Stevie Wonders Blu-ray. There is one shot of a lady playing the harp but no harp to be heard. Maybe I was just expecting the level of quality and care taken in the mix for "Live With Orchestra And Special Guests". It is still a pleasure to watch though .
