3.0 out of 5 stars Statham's 80's Action Trip, 3 Jun 2014
This review is from: Homefront [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
'Homefront' is an action thriller film that released in 2013 to poor reviews, however succeeded at the box-office by raking in nearly double its budget. Sylvester Stallone who is the producer and responsible for the screenplay, abandoned his original intentions to be the lead actor due to his age.

The story centers around a former Drug Enforcement Administration agent (Jason Statham) who moves to a quiet town with his daughter, only to begin a tussle with Gator (James Franco), the dreaded drug lord.

To sum up this feature, it is your run of the mill Statham action flick that entertains. Good production values combined with plenty action and added drama makes the movie a reasonable watch.

The downside are the clichéd plot, choppy and jumbled action scenes and the fizzled out ending.

Statham is always watchable as the action hero and does what is required with ease. Franco as the evil villain was exciting to watch. He spiced up the tension between him and Statham. Winona Ryder is wasted in the movie an her acting is awful.

Gary Fleder's direction is cheesy and predictable, yet all that fitting for the premise. You know what you're gonna get and it's cool.

'Homefront' is best suited for fans who love Statham beating the crap out of bad guys. Treat it like an action hit of the earlier ages.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably Disappointing, 3 Jun 2014
This review is from: Reasonable Doubt [DVD] (DVD)
'Reasonable Doubt' is a crime thriller film that released in 2014, direct to video and in some countries straight to television. The film has been panned by critics upon release and has went unnoticed.

The story revolves around a District Attorney (Dominic Cooper) who commits a fatal hit and run vehicle accident. In a turn of events another man (Samuel L. Jackson) is charged with the murder.

The concept was interesting with initial tension, twists and shocks. However, the downfall are the erratic screenplay, implausible events and giving away the story in the first thirty minutes. The main protagonist's repeated stupidity and the clichéd final stretch combined with the abrupt ending cemented the disappointment.

Dominic Cooper's character is a District Attorney, yet he is portrayed to be so so stupid. His acting doesn't help matters. Samuel L. Jackson plays the same character as if he's in Lakeview Terrace 2, which I hope never happens. Jackson's acting is nothing new nor interesting. The only good and convincing performance I noted was from Ryan Robbins who plays the role of Jimmy Logan.

The direction by Peter Howitt is poor as he loses control of a good idea. The end product is simply a waste with too many plot holes.

'Reasonable Doubt' appears to be a half baked adaptation of an incomplete script.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Simple Match with Plenty Rounds of Laughter, 2 Jun 2014
This review is from: Grudge Match [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
'Grudge Match' is a sports comedy film that released in 2013 to negative reviews and flopped at the box-office.

The story centres around two ageing retired boxers and arch rivals, Henry "Razor" Sharp (Sylvester Stallone) and Billy "The Kid" McDonnen (Robert De Niro). Both decide to return to the ring one last time to fight each other.

Poor reviews and a boring trailer meant I wasn't looking forward to this movie.

Upon watching the film, I was pleasantly surprised with how entertaining the final product was. There was good drama, funny one-liners and rib tickling old age jokes. The cast were a class act with energetic performances. The climax fight was fitting and perfect. All in all, a feel good entertainer.

De Niro and Stallone sail through with decent performances and act their age. Their on screen chemistry is top notch. Stallone was undeservedly nominated for a Golden Raspberry award for his acting. A wrong call, as he was gracious and under played the character. Kim Basinger is drowned out by the men but looks too good for her age and rolls back the years as the lead actress. Jon Bernthal plays Basinger's son and stands out amongst the heavyweights. My pick of the lot and show stealers are Alan Arkin and Kevin Hart. Alan Arkin as the witty trainer, Lightning, is a joyful watch. No one's a match for him in the movie. Kevin Hart brings the house down as the wisecracking boxing promoter. Both Arkin and Hart are involved in the main comedic moments and when they come face to face, it's even sweeter.

Peter Segal as the director comes out with an underrated comedy with top actors that makes you laugh. Also a nice touch by adding the post credits scene that's quite funny.

'Grudge Match' for me is one of the top comedies of 2013 that packs a serious punch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accomplished Nail-Biter, 27 Dec 2013
This review is from: Drug War [DVD] (DVD)
'Drug War (Du Zhan 毒戰)' is a Chinese-Hong Kong Police crime film that released in 2012. The film was both a critical and box-office success.

The story shows how a Police Captain (Sun Honglei) captures a drug lord (Louis Koo), who in order to avoid the death penalty becomes a mole.

Firstly, I love Johnnie To directed crime thrillers, they are stylish and innovative. His accomplishments include the highly rated 'Sparrow', 'Election' and 'Mad Detective to name a few. 'Drug War' takes some time to find its stride. Once the characters settle and the story evolves into compelling situations, its all edge-of-the-seat entertainment accompanied by good shoot-out set pieces. There are a few sequences that are executed brilliantly in typical To fashion and the ending is unconventional yet explosive and unpredictable.

Honglei is excellent as the serious no-nonsense Police Captain. There's a scene where he is forced to take drugs, his acting was unbelievable and the scene is a delight to watch. I couldn't take my eyes off, by far the best scene of the movie. Koo as the drug lord with unclear motives is highly effective. He keeps you guessing until the end.

Mr. To directs the feature with sheer class and executes each scene with style and substance. He creates suspense that is top-notch with plenty of twists. For me he's a viewers director, always creating polished compelling cinema.

'Du Zhan' is a tightly wound engrossing tale of cops versus criminals. Solid watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Funny, 25 Dec 2013
'That's My Boy' is comedy film that released in 2012. On its release the film was labelled as one of the worst movies ever made and received eight Golden Raspberry Award nominations, winning worst actor and worst screenplay. The feature was also embroiled in criticism for its comedic portrayal of incest and other related controversial subjects. In conclusion, the film flopped badly at the box-office.

Yes, the themes may be off putting and vulgarity not digested well. It's not something I enjoy watching. However, all these things aside, I enjoyed the overall comedy, which was fresh in execution.

The story revolves around Donny Berger (Adam Sandler) who is estranged from his son (Andy Samberg), he fathered when he was a teenager. In the present day, Donnie re-enters the life of his son just before his wedding to create mayhem.

I really enjoy Adam Sandler films and this offering was quite different, which is an understatement. I kept putting off watching the movie due to the bad press it received. I then watched it with my wife, who hates vulgar themed films, especially when there's controversial themes put in the mix. I was shocked, she actually found it funny, even more than me. I found some of the situations truly in your face hilarious. The jokes are new and make you laugh.

Unfortunately the acting by everyone is so bad. The main culprit is Sandler who deservedly won the Worst Actor Award. Saying that, this is a Sandler show and even with bad acting he makes you laugh.

The direction by Sean Anders is amusing when witnessing the outrageous scenarios that are rib tickling.

'That's My Boy' is a scandalous guilty pleasure.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Fun with Sandler and Co, 25 Dec 2013
This review is from: Grown Ups 2 [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
'Grown Ups 2' is a buddy comedy film that released in 2013. The film is a sequel to the hit Grown Ups, which released in 2010. Even though heavily panned by critics, the second installment earned three times the budget raking in more than 240 million dollars at the box-office.

The story again centers around the lives of four childhood friends (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James) as they deal with crazy situations involving family, bullies, friends and above all the mayhem they cause.

I have a soft spot for Adam Sandler comedies and this is no exception. I loved the prequel and I'm first to admit that this is weaker. Still there are plenty of laughs and slapstick moments that are a treat to watch. Yes, the jokes are at times lazy, but it doesn't affect the fun. Also in the mix are uplifting feel good moments.

All the actors appear natural at what they do, it's clear they were having a blast. No one tries hard to act, just the presence of everyone is sufficient. The movie does't demand good acting, just comedic chemistry that connects well with the funny episodes. My pick of the lot is Sandler, he's the heart and soul. The actor who I greatly missed though is Rob Schneider, who has done about eighteen films with his friend, Sandler mainly in cameos. I thought he was entertaining in the first part and always look forward to seeing his hilarious cameos in Sandler movies. Apparently there were scheduling conflicts, but he's been missing from Sandler's other recent outings as well. Hopefully he returns for Grown Ups 3.

The direction adopted by Dennis Dugan who has done about eight films with Sandler is let the boys have fun, I comprehend.

'Grown Up 2' is simply a good laugh with the buddies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hummingbird Never Takes Off, 5 Nov 2013
This review is from: Hummingbird [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
'Hummingbird' (Released as Redemption in the US) is a British action thriller film that released in 2013 to poor reviews and flopped at the box-office.

The story revolves around Joey Smith (Jason Statham), a homeless special forces soldier struggling with alcohol and drugs addictions. He then sets out to get his life back on track whilst looking for a missing friend.

First of all, this isn't your typical Statham action-flick. The mood is sombre and priority is given to the acting and drama. The film is set in London with a stylish urban background. The feature falters on a sluggish pace, an incoherent story and a rather off-putting melodramatic romance angle between Statham and Agata Buzek. The film threatened to pick up pace and get into groove a few times but ends up sidetracked. The climax is pretty weak.

The only positive aspect is Statham who tries really hard to help matters. Even though his acting won't win any awards, it was engaging enough.

Steven Knight on his directorial debut struggles to take advantage of a reasonable premise. There's too many distractions and inconsistencies.

There is no redemption for this Hummingbird.

World War Z [DVD]

3.0 out of 5 stars Salvaging Act by Pitt and Forster, 4 Nov 2013
This review is from: World War Z [DVD] (DVD)
'World War Z' is an apocalyptic zombie film that released in 2013 and received mainly positive ratings. The box-office outcome was a success making more than double its budget, which was about $190 million. Good result for the producers who were worried after the estimated budget of $125 million had increased by $65 million. The film is an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name, authored by Max Brooks.

The film stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane who is tasked by the military to help find a way to halt a worldwide zombie pandemic.

Lets start with the rumors of production problems that plagued the feature. Apparently there were casting issues, the script was rewritten and the climax re-shot. The main talking point has been the ending. The original twelve minute ending was shot in a large scale with Pitt heroically battling zombies in Moscow. The ending was scrapped to shadow the political aspects in favor of turning the final product into an appealing summer blockbuster. All the problems pointed to a disastrous outcome. Luckily, the movie had enough substance to overcome the obstacles. As a result, the sequel is being planned.

So, after me faffing so much, my final verdict is, I liked it. The opening act is terrific and there is non-stop action set in impressive imagery. There are suffering in the form of a generic plot and non-existent blood or gore which you'd think is an essential element of the genre. The special effects executed on the zombies who are shown to have frightening mannerisms compensates. Now for the climax, which should've been explosive, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the film. I was expecting a war (the title even says war) and Pitt kicking serious zombie butt. Funnily, I wasn't disappointed. The finale was more like a low budget old-school style approach, using silence and atmosphere to create heightened suspense and eeriness. I really enjoyed the thrilling final act, even though it felt like a separate movie.

The acting from most actors is weak with not much character development. Some of the zombies had more character. Brad Pitt does a good job as the main protagonist and takes you along for a ride in hell. Pitt's screen presence and smart character keeps everything together. Daniella Kertesz as an Israeli soldier also puts in a strong performance after her entry in the latter stages, very convincing.

Marc Forster does a brilliant job to salvage the movie in the midst of numerous unwanted production uncertainties. He must've kept his cool. Probably not his fault, but the end result does not in any way justify the $190 million budget.

'World War Z' is a disaster movie saved from a literal disaster. It has the zombie factor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rock Solid, 4 Nov 2013
This review is from: Snitch [DVD] (DVD)
'Snitch' is a crime drama film that released in 2013 to a mixed critical response. On its release, the film became a box-office hit. 'Snitch' is based on a true story where a male called James Settembrino helped prosecutors by providing information about drug dealers in return for a lower prison sentence for his son. The movie is also inspired by the documentary 'Frontline', which was shown in America on the television network PBS.

The movie shows how John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock) begins to work as an undercover snitch for the Drugs Enforcement Agency to free his son from prison.

The feature is an engaging watch with moving drama and a serious story. It's not thrilling or groundbreaking but offers plenty of grit to capture your attention. A consistent pace and some action makes the viewing smooth sailing. The climax is exciting and satisfying.

All actors perform well, excluding The Rock who rises above the rest. He plays the role of a hurting father with conviction and maturity. A solid and probably a career best performance.

Ric Roman Waugh gives a direction, although cliched never disappointing. The family drama is touching and the action is crisp. He has received some flak though for the mixed messages the film conveys from being a realistic story to an implausible action thriller.

'Snitch' is best described as an entertainer centered around a Solid Rock.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mad Comedy, 3 Nov 2013
This review is from: This is the End [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
'This Is the End' is an apocalyptic comedy film that released in 2013 to a positive response and became a runaway success at the box-office.

This outrageous comedy revolves around Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride who play the fictional numbskull forms of themselves. They are seen dealing with the events of an Apocalypse in a manner that can be best described as mental.

I'll be frank, this film is pure madness with talented comedians who are at times unintentionally funny. The movie is childish to be subtle and the script seems non-existent. But, you know what, its fun all the way, if not the funniest movie you'll see. There's a lot of energy and the what crazy thing happens next factor kept me watching till the end. The ending is, well what can I say, don't know where that came from. To mix things in, the special effects are quite smart.

The performances from all the actors is stoned lazy, however still cool and entertaining. Each actors funny screen presence is at times funnier than a scene or a joke. My favorite is normally Seth Rogen but this time round Danny McBride and Craig Robinson take the honors. There are other notable cameos who are quite funny.

The direction by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg is just bananas. I'm sure they made this for only one reason, FUN! They've made a not to be taken seriously at all entertainer.

'This Is the End' has an impressive cast that are a treat to watch and the wild premise is funny enough.
