5.0 out of 5 stars Tantalizing, 7 Oct. 2009
24 fanatics and viewers in general, the third installment in the 24 franchise clearly scores a cracking hat-trick, which means the makers simply maintain the high standards that were set in season 1 & 2.

The main question is, does it supercede season 2, which in my opinion is the best. The answer is, "No", however, it's still ELECTRIC.

The third season as 24 tradition goes, contains the essential elements (suspense, tension and drama), which has made 24 so successfull. But hold your breath, there's a pleasant surprise in the form of a more healthier but not excessive dosage of action (exciting) accompanied by GRITTINESS (realistic and raw). The addition of these two effective ingredients spices up the plot and and presents us, the audience with our beloved '24', in a fresh way. The makers have clearly approached the concept differently but ultimately achieve the same goal, which is making pure entertainment and keeping us, and this is of utmost importance, INTERESTED.

All the key actors return to provide award winning performances, which are unbelievably consistent. Dennis Haysbert (President Palmer) returns and produces again, an inspirational performance. Haysbert's screen presence is electrifying.
Now, coming to the backbone of '24', Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) returns in style and is the show stealer as he produces a gritty performance by displaying a detailed and intense character with brilliance.

In this season, Jack has to fight his inner demons (you'll find out when you watch it), which is deatailed on screen with skill, and in doing so, engages the audience with priority. This results in forcing the viewer or shall I say, I was forced to ask, "Will Jack do it?" and also forced to say at the same time, "Please don't". Fellow fans, this is why I LOVE 24.

People, this season, in short is SUPERB.

Please note that every season is linked therefore, you need to watch season 1 & 2 to understand season 3 and so forth.

24: Season 3 is the 'EPITOME OF PURE ENTERTAINMENT'.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Emotional Martial Arts Epic, 9 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Ip Man [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
'Ip Man' is based on the life of the martial artist, Ip Man who was the real life Kung fu master of Bruce Lee. The movie concentrates solely on the events, which occurred around Ip Man in the city of Foshan (China) between 1930 and 1940 during the 'Second Sino-Japanese (China/Japan) War'.

In the movie, the main form of martial art that is displayed is Wing Chun, which specializes in close-range combat. Ip Man was the first martial arts master to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun openly.

Ip Man is one of the finest martial arts movies produced by the Hong Kong movie industry. It was released in December 2008 to a widespread deserved critical acclaim and box-office success. The movie was nominated for 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, winning awards for Best Picture and Best Action Choreography.

The star of the show is the really underrated Donnie Yen who enacts the role of Ip Man. He is simply underrated because he has not been involved in many high grossing movies, whereas the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li have. Donnie Yen, if not better, is equally as talented as Chan and Li. In the movie, the way he performed the action scenes is worthy of an applause, simply jaw dropping. Yen performs the action scenes with natural ease making the fighting look beautiful and artistic. Now, coming to the acting, this is clearly Yen's career best performance as he portrays both a 'Hero' and a 'Wounded lion' with total conviction and raging aggression. The way he expresses his emotions via facial expressions and physically is SUPERB. Ip Man is a Donnie Yen show from beginning to end.

The character of the main villain is portrayed by the Japanese actor, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi. His portrayal of the formidable Japanese general is impressive.

The movie is directed by Wilson Yip who provides excellent direction, succeeding in keeping the audience glued to the screen until the end. Ip Man is the fourth collaboration between Yen and Yip after the brilliant 'SPL: Sha Po Lang (AKA Kill Zone)', the enjoyable 'Dragon Tiger Gate' and the entertaining 'Flash Point'. All these movies are of the action genre and showcase the chemistry and talent of the duo. All three movies contain stunning martial arts especially 'Sha Po Lang', which was hailed as a return to the classic Hong Kong action cinema. Ip Man is the best effort from the duo to date.

The stunning action choreography, which is a treat to watch is provided by the legendary Sammo Hung (Hong Kong Actor/Martial Artist/Director) who has starred in classic movies like 'Wheels on Meals', 'Project A' and also 'Sha Po Lang'. The beautifull choreography by Hung is displayed on screen by Yen's martial arts skills with finesse. The fight scenes, which are real and brutal are the best I've ever seen and will leave your heart-pounding.

Another hero of the movie is the background music score, which is composed by the Japanese composer, Kenji Kawai. The music is moving and compliments the narration and Yen's action scenes with sheer perfection. The music combined with the martial-arts display by Yen simply inspired me to learn Wing Chun, but after carrying out a reality check, I think I'll leave the martial arts to Yen.

Ip Man is not a normal martial arts movie as it contains all the essential elements of an out-and-out entertainer. It's one of my favourite movies as it has a moving/emotional story, with a great narration, brilliant action, terrific performances and to round it all off, soothing and inspiring music.

It's an inspiring feel-good movie with Ip Man being portrayed as the real 'Peoples Hero' who fought for his people. Once the movie gains momentum you'll be rooting for Yen subconsciously and in the process you just might discover the 'Hero' within you.

Ip Man is strongly recomended as it is one of the greatest Hong Kong movies ever. As a result, Ip Man 2 is currently in the making and is being planned to be released at the end of 2010, can't wait.

Once Ip Man receives international recognition (for some reason it hasn't yet) it'll become an instant classic.

Magnificent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense Mystery, 9 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Surveillance [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
'Surveillance' is an independent mystery thriller directed by Jennifer Lynch who is the daughter of David Lynch (Director of 'Blue Velvet' & 'Mulholland Drive'). The movie premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. On its release, 'Surveillance' received mixed reviews and undeservedly failed at the box-office. As a result the feature has went unnoticed, which is unfortunate.

I rented and wacthed the DVD after reading a couple of good reviews. As I love mystery/suspense thrillers, I had high expectations of the movie. So the main question is, does it live up to the expectations? The answer is, "Yes".

The film tells the story of two FBI agents, Elizabeth Anderson (Julia Ormond) and Sam Hallaway (Bill Pullman) investigate a series of mysterious murders. They then interview surviving eyewitnesses who provide different accounts of what occurred.

Surveillance is a tense thriller with a terrific cast who produce convincing performances, especially Brian Pullman and Julia Ormond who enact the roles of two FBI agents.

The movie grabs your attention, right from the beginning, slowly builds up the tension with great suspense and concludes with a shocking climax. The twist at the end is simply unpredictable and worth the wait. As a viewer you just need to be patient as the movie slowly but effectively unfolds.

The production values of the movie is good and the direction provided by Jennifer Lynch is impressive as she does a brilliant job, holding the attention of the viewer.

The movie succeeds in ticking all the correct boxes, which is required to make a good old mystery/suspense thriller.

'Surveillance' an underrated feature that is essential viewing for fans of the mystery/suspense genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC Hong Kong Action at its BEST, 1 Sept. 2009
Wheels on Meals is one of the greatest comedy/action movies produced by the Hong Kong film industry. These kind of movies are no longer made and why, I have no idea.

The movie was released in 1984 to deserved widespread critical acclaim and box-office success.

The theme of the movie is comedy and martial-arts action, both of these elements are impressively combined to produce pure entertainment.

The movie stars Jackie Chan, Summo Hung (Also the director of the movie) & Yuen Biao in lead roles. These three actors were the biggest stars in Hong Kong in the 80's and were referred to as the 'THREE BROTHERS'. The chemistry between the brothers is excellent, which they also proved when they starred together in 'PROJECT A' and 'DRAGONS FOREVER'. All three actors perform the comic and action scenes with natural flare and great skill.

Jackie Chan as usual is the numero uno entertainer in the movie with his natural charisma and fighting talent. This is easily one of Chan's greatest movies. Summo Hung is perfect in the comic scenes and impressive in the action scenes as well. You'll be surprised to see how physically flexible Hung is during fights since he is quite big in body size. Yuen Biao who is very underrated and always overlooked is equally as talented as Chan when it comes to martial arts or comedy. However, he has never reached his true potential. In the movie, he is a joy to watch especially when he fights against one of the villains played by Keith Vitali in the climax.

The show stealer of the movie is the beautifully chroeographed action scenes, which are naturally performed by the lead actors without the use of strings or computer generated imagery. The action scenes are simply a treat to watch, especially the last 30 minutes of the movie, which consists of the three brothers fighting three different opponents simultaneously but in different rooms. The best fight is performed by Jackie Chan who competes against another villain played by Benny 'The Jet' Urquidez (Kickboxer & Martial Arts Chreographer). The fight is regarded as a classic and is mesmerising to watch as it is real full contact fighting. You will be glued to the screen as both Chan and Urquidez beat the living hell out of each other in an entertaining way. The choreography combined with the foot tapping background score (Composed by Chris Barbida & Tang Siu Lam) is fantastic. The comic scenes are also quite funny mainly due to the perfect comic timing of the lead actors.

The movie was completely shot in Barcelona, Spain and the background scenery of the city is beautifully displayed in the movie.

The picture and sound quality of the DVD is brilliant. This DVD is the double-disc edition, which includes entertaining special features.

To enjoy the movie in its originality, you should watch it with the original cantonese audio track accompanied by the subtitles, which will give you the feel of the classic 80's Hong Kong action era. There is an option for english audio but the dubbing is poor and not enjoyable.

I watched the movie on VHS in 1988 when I was a kid, it instantly became a classic for me and I was basically in awe of the movie. I recently watched it on DVD and found it more enjoyable than before. It was like being a kid again and confirmed that the 80's era of Hong Kong action movies was just simply the best. The movie may have released in the 80's but hasn't lost its magic as it has aged very well. It is better than most of the movies being released nowadays.

It's simply a light-hearted comedy mixed with fantastic martial arts action accompanied by a cool Chinese background musical score.

It is a movie that has to be seen to really appreciate a true classic of its era.

Sensational.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, 30 Aug. 2009
This review is from: The Cell 2 [DVD] (DVD)
I rented this DVD as I enjoyed 'The Cell', starring Jennifer Lopez and because the DVD cover was deceivingly appealing. The image of the lead actress (Tessie Santiago) on the DVD cover has been made out to look like Jennifer Lopez, obviously a marketing technique to lure the vulnerable audience. I was in for a shock as it is one of the worst movies I have ever watched.

The movie was so boring to the extent that I finished watching it within 30 minutes by fast forwarding it. It was a complete waste of time.

The production values were cheap, which I expected but it was the acting that was HORRENDOUS, especially Santiago's.

This movie shoud not have been made in order to prevent the audience from suffering. I think the producers (Alex Barder & Lawrence Silverstein) and the director (Tim Iacofano) of the movie should've been paid NOT to make this nightmare.

Please do not rent or buy this movie. Even if it's free, don't watch it. Instead watch again, 'The Cell', which is a good thriller and entertaining.

CELL 2 IS A DISASTER.

5.0 out of 5 stars The GREATEST Return, 30 Aug. 2009
24 fans, I can proudly say that Jack is Back with a bang.

It is near to impossible to improve or better something, which was original and innovative. I guess the word impossible is an unknown word to the creaters (Joel Surnow & Robert Cochran) who have created 'THE BEST SEASON' of the 24 franchise, which easily supercedes season 1.

In season 2, the main two effective ingredients are gripping suspense and engaging drama, which accomodate more twists and turns than all the other 24 seasons combined together.

All the important characters including 'David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert)' return in style to produce flawless performances. As for Jack (Kiefer Sutherland), he's simply BACK!

Whatever entertainment, excitement, drama, and tension you experienced watching season 1, just multiply it by a hundred and you have season 2. The suspense in each episode is just a killer.

Ladies and Gentlemen it's officialy the the most scintallating 24 hours of our lives.

Please note that every season is linked therefore, you need to watch season 1 to understand season 2 and so forth.

24: Season 2 demands to be seen.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure ADDICTION, Sheer BRILLIANCE, Simply EXPLOSIVE, 29 Aug. 2009
24 is the greatest most powerfull piece of entertainment to grace the television platform. It is incredible and compelling to the point that you will be BLOWN AWAY.

I refuse to label 24 as a television series as it supercedes majority of the big budget feature movies being released every week. It is simply an elegant and intelligent piece of cinema consisting of 24 nail-biting, exciting and tense parts.

The theme of 24 is basically a perfect combination of drama, suspense, action and more suspense. The plot and it's sub-plots are simply unpredictable. It consists of 24 episodes each with an average duration of about 45 minutes. The base of 24 is the CTU's (Counter Terrorist Unit) battle against terrorism, which is shown during a span of 24 hours. Everything is shown in real-time as it happens without any lame flashbacks.

24 stars Kiefer Sutherland as 'Jack Bauer', which is now his trademark and career defining role. His portrayal of a counter terrorist unit agent won him the Golden Globe Award for the best actor in a television drama series. 24 also stars Dennis Haysbert as 'David Palmer' who plays the role of a senator. Haysbert is excellent and would have won an oscar for his performance if it was a movie. The rest of the cast are also brilliant. Also of note is the outstanding theme, background score and the soundtrack, which is composed by Sean Callery.

The main plot of 24 is that there is a mole/traitor within the CTU and how Jack attempts to identify that person. You'll have made your mind up after the first episode as to who the mole is but that will keep changing for the next 23 episodes, exciting isn't it. The makers of 24 will keep you guessing until the final episode and trust me, they do it in style.

24 is the mother of suspense, tension and excitement, no doubt about it. Once you watch the first episode there is no turning back and guaranteed after you start watching it, you will only blink after episode 24 has ended. It's simply a case of getting used to being on the edge of your seat for the 24 episodes. I must warn you that it is highly addictive, forget drugs and alcohol, this is the real deal.

I have never ever felt this excited or tense watching a movie/television series. 24 is great because there is at least five twists per episode and the best thing is each episode ends with a satisfactory result/outcome and does not drag on like 'Lost' and 'Heroes'. It is also clean entertainment with no swearing at all.

24 was the longest day of Jack's life (when you watch 24, you'll know what I'm talking about) but unfortunately, the shortest day of our lives as an audience as I would like it to go on and on forever.

24 is perfect with an intriguing story line, tense drama, terrific suspense, exciting action, intelligent dialogue and brilliant performances. In short 24 is MAGNIFICENT and does not disappoint.

24 is original and innovative as it gets.

Please watch 24 (most enjoyable on DVD and not Television), if you don't you will regret it as it is something you need to watch before you die, literally.

ELECTRIFYING ENTERTAINMENT!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Call' it an Emotional Bollywood Drama, 28 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pukar [DVD] (DVD)
Pukar (English meaning: Call) is a Bollywood (Indian Film Industry) movie, which released in 2000 to critical acclaim and mediocre box-office success due to the delayed release.

The theme of the movie is action/drama with the story consisting of the lead actor's (Anil Kapoor) battle against terrorists (led by Danny Denzongpa).

The movie is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi (Director of 'Ghayal', 'Damini', 'Andaz Apna Apna', 'Ghatak' and 'Khakee') who extracts terrific performances from the main actors, especially Anil Kapoor. Santoshi concentrates mainly on the emotional scenes, which he executes with skill. Also of note is the cinematography provided by Santosh Sivan, which is beautiful and gives the movie a glossy and international look. In short, the background scenery and the way the movie is presented on screen is beautiful.

The tuneful and classy musical score is provided by the musical genius A.R Rahman who is referred to as the 'Mozart of Madras'. One song of note is the soothing duet "Kismet Se Tum", which is underrated but beautifully sung by Sonu Niigaam (Great Indian Singer) and Anuradha Paudwal.

The movie stars Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Danny Denzongpa in lead roles.

Anil Kapoor (Lead Actor) produced a career best performance, which won him the Indian National Award (Equivalent to the Academy Award) for best actor. He portrays the character of an army officer who overcomes many emotional obstacles to succeed in the fight against terrorism. Kapoor's emotional scenes are worthy of applause.

Madhuri Dixit (Lead Actress) stars as the love interest of Kapoor and convincingly holds her own against Kapoor with a flawless performance. She enacts the role of an attention seeker who longs for the love of Kapoor, which she tries to gain at any cost.

Dixit and Kapoor have made numerous memorable blockbusters ('Tezaab', 'Ram Lakhan', 'Beta' & 'Kishen Kanhaiya' to name a few) together and their chemistry is electrifying. One scene of note in the move is when Kapoor attends at Dixit's house clearly in a state of low morale. Dixit, on seeing Kapoor offers him food to which Kapoor emotionally says that he hasn't eaten in ages. Dixit then reacts by bursting into tears as she can't bear to see Kapoor in the emotinal state. This scene, performed by Kapoor and Dixit was of sheer brilliance. The facial expressions of both actors simply bought a tear to my eye and as a result has become a memorable scene.

Danny Denzongpa who plays the villain, produces a fine performance, which makes his character formidable.

I watched the movie in 2000 and bought it straight away as it was a must-have. I watched it again at the end of 2008 and actually enjoyed it more than before. On watching the movie it is very hard not to become emotional.

The only minor criticism is the length (2hrs 55mins) of the movie, which could have been trimmed by 25 minutes as it slightly drags in the climax.

The picture and sound quality of the DVD is good.

The movie is a must-watch for fans of quality cinema who appreciate powerfull performances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Tense Thriller, 28 Aug. 2009
This review is from: The Killing Room [DVD] (DVD)
'The Killing Room' is a psychological thriller that was released Direct-to-DVD in 2009 and also premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The movie has went unnoticed on its release, but whoever's watched it has provided a positive feedback.

The movie tells the story of four people who sign up for a psychological research and are held in one room. They discover that all is not what it seems and that there is only going to be one survivor at the end of the experiment.

Please don't be fooled by the direct to DVD status of this movie as it was worthy of a theatrical release. I've just rented it out and was in for a pleasant surprise when I viewed it as I did not have high expectations.

It was a tense thriller with impressive performances from most of the cast. The movie starts off with a bang, slowly builds up the tension and finishes with a twist. The climax is acceptable, however leaves unanswered questions.

The flaws are the pace of the movie, which plummets at times and ChloŽ Sevigny's (enacts the role of Ms. Reilly) unconvincing performance.

The production value is 'A' class and the direction provided by Jonathan Liebesman (Director of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning') is engaging as he maintains the tension.

I am a big fan of the mystery/suspense/thriller genre and I can say that 'The Killing Room' was enjoyable as it included to an extent, all the essential elements I was looking for. All in all, a good mystery thriller that keeps you guessing.

'The Killing Room' is recomended for fans of tense thrillers.
