5.0 out of 5 stars A Robot that works!, 3 Sept. 2014
Granted, Whiskers does not have the lawnmower-like power of the high range devices, but it isn't designed to and it is priced accordingly.
One of the few gadgets I have bought that the missus approves of!
Although simple in it's programming it is surprisingly effective on hard floors. (The cleaning pattern has already been well described so no point in repeating it.) A real time saver as it's a pain to drag out the Vax every day. In fact, our vacuum tends to stay upstairs with the carpets.
The collection bin is sufficient for a medium sized room and provided it, the filter and the brushes are regularly cleaned Whiskers will remain effective. Long hairs tend to find their way into the brush spindles and slow down the brushes in time but they are easy enough to pop off and clean. In fact much easier than cleaning a vacuum cleaner brush.
A great feature is the that it calls for help by beeping when stuck, for example under furniture, rather than continue to attempt to run and deplete the battery or burn out the motor.
Charging time of 4 hours is good for about an hour vacuuming and as far as I can tell there has been no deterioration in battery performance in over a year of use.
This is what technology should be about: making life easier without breaking the bank.
Great gadget: buy one!

4.0 out of 5 stars What it says on the tin, 2 May 2014

You invite me to review - OK.
I bought a gift certificate.
I gave it to my wife.
She spent it.
So, it worked.
BUT - I had to print it, with my ink and paper, and put it in an envelope addressed to my wife, all by myself!
Why couldn't you send a guy round to do this for me?
So, only 4 stars: must try harder!

A Grim Almanac of Jack the Ripper's London 1870-1900
A Grim Almanac of Jack the Ripper's London 1870-1900
Price: £10.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Grim, 10 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fascinating insight into crime and criminal justice at the end of the 19th century.
However only 4 stars as while there is clearly a great deal of effort gone into the research, it is presented in a haphazard way. It doesn't really flow and tales are grouped by month, regardless of the year.
Nevertheless, it makes you appreciate the benefits of modern life, such as food!

Harris Victory Premium Decorative Barbecue Cover
Harris Victory Premium Decorative Barbecue Cover

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea wasted, 28 Aug. 2013

Bought this a few months ago to protect my new BBQ. The cover initially looks great, better than most. However it would be advisable to keep it out of the sun.
After a couple of months, the parts with most exposure to sunlight are faded and the coating is now flaking off.
Still seems to keep the rain out, but will soon look tattier than a plain black cover, and I now doubt whether it will last the winter.
Back to the old tarp.

The Last Crusade: The Epic Voyages of Vasco da Gama
The Last Crusade: The Epic Voyages of Vasco da Gama
Price: £6.02

5.0 out of 5 stars On the Shoulders of Giants, 30 April 2013

Cruel, obsessed, arrogant: but without Vaco Da Gama and others like him our world today would take on a very different aspect.
This is a fascinating account of how a tiny nation like Portugal changed the course of history and much of it due to one man's obedience to his God and his King.
This is no textbook history, this is a hugely readable and riveting account of the Portugal's expansion into the East.
Like it or not in these tolerant and enlightened times (perhaps I jest...), there have been huge clashes of religious philosophy throughout history - but this account reveals that the real objective, as ever, was wealth, resources and territory and the philosophy simply the means of control.
Cliff has drawn on a vast array of authorities, but has managed to imbue the narrative with life, delving into the minds and motives of the players.
Countless casualties litter the book, and the horrific outrages perpetrated by Da Gama, his cohorts and his enemies are at times scarcely believable.
Nevertheless, as a person who by accident of birth is a product of "Western Civilisation" , and glad of it, one can't help wondering: what if Da Gama had failed?

5.0 out of 5 stars Vonnegut - Genius, 30 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At the price it is a steal.
For those who are familiar with Vonnegut's major novels (Slaughterhouse 5, Player Piano, Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, et al) this is a delight.
For those unfamiliar it is a great introduction to the mind of Kurt Vonnegut.
Although pidgeonholed as a Science Fiction writer, Vonnegut transcends boundaries.
His imagination may sometimes take us to the stars but he is equally adept in the darker recesses of the mind, as the opening tale of obsession shows. Time to Vonnegut is not linear, but a pool to be dipped in and out of in search of the story behind his characters and his humour always restores my joy in reading.

High Quality Parasol Cover Banana Cantilever
Offered by Speedwellstar
Price: £16.50

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, 30 April 2013

Like it says, covers the parasol right down to the ground. Material is light but seems strong enough rfor the elements but have yet to see it tested through a British winter, hence the 4 stars at the moment. It has stood up to the Mad March and April winds so far.
Have seen others advertised much cheaper, but can't complain at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new look at the last days of WWII, 6 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Being interested in WWII history anyway, I had expected to enjoy the book, but it surpassed my expectations. I found it utterly engrossing.
Nicholas Best superbly shows the human face of all those old newsreels. How accurate is it? I have no way of telling, but the book achieves its aim of looking at the closing days of WWII from a different perspective.
There are poignant, dramatic, and thrilling episodes featuring the finest and most contemptible examples of humankind. One expects horror stories of the Nazis, but Best doesn't shy away from dubious acts of the Allies either.
He links the horrific experience to those of us who are fortunate enought to have benefitted from the sacrifices our forebears made by including such familiar cultural icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Deitrich and Joseph Heller.
He reminds us that almost the entire world was holding it's breath while the most aggressive war machine ever devised was breathing its last.
One can almost taste the dust of crumbling Berlin.
Read This Book.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor, rambling effort, 28 Jun. 2012
The ridiculous cover is absolutely suited to the book. Anyone with the most rudimentary grasp of history will cringe at Mr Scrivener's assessment of the era. Come on - "Eddie"???? His technique is inconsistent and his premise trite.
I would not insult a teeenager or younger person by saying this was suitable for them.
I've gotten about half way through, and you couldn't pay me to finish this.
Mr Scrivener - give it up.
