4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for jumbo size guitar, 24 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Pro: It is very light yet very protective, cheap and OK looking
Con: Very big outside and rather too big for the guitar I bought it for. More suited to a jumbo, but might fit (loosely) a dreadnaught. Dimension were not obvious from description. Still cheaper than the other cases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Updated, good biography, 24 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jane Austen: A Life (Paperback)
This is a good biography which I bought for my wife, who is getting to be something of an Austen scholar. She enjoyed reading it and was complementary about how readable it was. The book was first released some years ago but has been updated with some new research included

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, wonderful sound, 12 July 2012
Firstly, this is a very pretty guitar with an unusually sharp cutaway and an oval sound-hole. The top is western red cedar which gives a rounder tone than spruce, with slightly less projection. It is still a loud guitar, but with a very sweet sound. When played through the B-Band pickup it still sounds very good, with little noticeable 'quack' from the piezo. I had the action lowered a little and it plays as well as a decent electric, which is a good indication of a high standard of engineering for a moderately priced acoustic. The onboard tuner is useful, but needs to be viewed at an angle where it is difficult to adjust the tuners! (but maybe I have short arms).
The construction is light and you can feel the vibrations through the body, which I like. The sustain is very good. The neck is a bit narrow for big-fingered pickers, but I have little hands, so no problems for me, and it is still a bit wider than a telecaster. Overall the body is quite a compact size.
Bad things? well I mentioned the tuner, and the binding is a bit too plasticky for my taste, but these are very minor quibbles. For the price it is bloody brilliant, and I find I am practicing more than usual, just to hear how it sounds.

30 Walks in Shropshire (AA 30 Walks in)
30 Walks in Shropshire (AA 30 Walks in)
by AA Publishing
Edition: Cards

4.0 out of 5 stars Good series, convenient format, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The layout is good and the cards fit easily into a map case. The directions are consistent and well laid out. Overall, the walks are a little predicable, hence the four stars. The cards are attractive and waterproof.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, reliable series, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This series is well set out and the directions are accurate and reliable. The walks appear to be well chosen. The size is good for carrying round, but the binding is not convenient for folding into a map case, hence only four stars.

Mohandas Gandhi: The South Africa Years (They Fought for Freedom)
Mohandas Gandhi: The South Africa Years (They Fought for Freedom)
by Ela Gandhi
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars School book - not for serious research, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is relatively thin, does NOT do what it says on the label (in that much of it is not about the South African years) and reads like a saint's life. This would do for an 11 year old, but shows few signs of serious research or of some method of historiography. The text is bland, unchallenging and often trite. But, as a counterpoint, it is not intended for me. I believe that children deserve more challenging books than these, but it does provide some 'facts' at a level of reading age of about 11.

3.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, 24 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On the plus side, it looks pretty good and the tie was alright. And the price was very good. The buttons started to fall off when I first tried it on, and I had to put new thread on all buttons before I could go out in it. The way it was packed left creases and lines which were difficult to remove, even with a damp iron.

The Crying Of Lot 49
The Crying Of Lot 49

4.0 out of 5 stars Look out for the muted post-horn, 17 May 2012
This review is from: The Crying Of Lot 49 (Paperback)
Truth be told, I ought not to like this book. I've never been much of a fan of post-modernism, and this novella almost certainly falls within that category. As for conspiracy theory novels, well, don't get me started! But, and here is a very big 'however', this book is funny, perceptive and thought-provoking. It has all the density of Pynchon's other works but in a much shorter form. Read other reviewers to learn something of the plot and characters, but just be warned, reading this might send you seriously paranoid. Unmarked white vans, strange symbols and the revenge of the disposessed all come into it. Then there is the evidence of a collection of strangely defaced postage stamps. It is precisely because there is no satisfactory resolution to the story that you start to worry that some of it might just be true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed, 23 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this for £115.99, at which price it is an absolute steal. The operation is simple and the layout quite ergonomic. It has an outrageous 18 x zoom, a good anti-shake and menus which are easy to use. There are a variety of modes, of which the panorama is the stand-out. It is really easy to control the flash between different modes and the HD video works well, though you can't zoom while shooting. The optics produce good resolution and work well with the 16mp sensor. I'm not technical enough to discuss noise, but the results I have had so far have been impressive. I'm going to carry this everywhere and am looking forward to using it at a wedding in May. It would have been nice to have a viewfinder, but very few modern compacts do. The metallic orange colour is less boring than black and white.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bluegrass skiffle, 1 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Riverboat Soul (Audio CD)
Riverboat Soul is an offering from Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three that defies the wisdom of the manufactured acts. This is determindly acoustic and backwards looking, more Jimmie Rodgers than Hank Williams in the tempo, if not the song writing. It took a couple of listens before I defined exactly what label I could give it. It is in the country / old time camp, but is played as skiffle, a musical style I can just about remember. The musicianship is pretty good, and the band are tight. Pokey has exactly the right voice for the material and writes a mean song, even if he uses the titles of old songs and gives you a completely different tune and set of words.
This comes with a strong recommendation, but just one slight annoyance in that the band tend to camp it up a bit with kazoos and other burbles which has a limited appeal to me, but overall it is quite joyous and worth the money, especially on digital download.
This is a damn fine book - Troubled Waters (Walter and Godiva)
