5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious and beautifully designed, 17 Feb 2014

It's just a joy to play - so intriguing and well put together. Only problem is that I couldn't put it down until I finished it - I'd love to have a new instalment once a month rather than several chapters at once -but I can hardly blame the developers if I don't have the necessary discipline and patience...

'Boys in Trouble' means 'Boys suffering'. Watch this if you want to see a pretty boy being mutilated by a psycho, a brief unexpected snog from an apparently straight guy who immediately resumes his heteronormative thuggery, a rent boy being threatened and bullied at gun point. The acting's generally OK and direction is of a tolerable standard, but this won't cheer you up.

4.0 out of 5 stars It peters out..., 27 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a professional and atmospheric piece of writing and I enjoyed it thoroughly until I got near the end and realised it was simply going to peter out. It's as if the writer suddenly realised that he'd got close to his word count and had to rush to his conclusion. An insignificant death, a couple (?) of cats who are built up as characters but are actually tangential to the story; a potentially interesting quest that leads nowhere: it doesn't add up to much. The writing and the promise of the first 80% of the novella earn it 4 stars: just don't expect too much from the ending.

Almost immediately you come across the entry 'das Abbildung', which is a howler. Do not trust this product - the compiler has a poor practical knowledge of German.

Enjoyed the film - everyone always likes a film about how miserable it is to be gay - but why did all those people say 'full frontal male nudity'? There isn't any!

I knew I had the odd moth here and there, but I didn't realise how many I had in my house until I unpacked this amazing trap. Within two or three minutes thirty or forty of them had collected within a couple of feet of the trap, and within an hour they had all touched down permanently on the sticky surface. I suppose there are about 100 there now. I was worried about the idea of attracting them in from outside, but I don't believe that has happened - there are very few newcomers in the trap now, and I only see the odd one flying in the house, which I hope will be a frustrated female.

They don't tell you that the image under the towel is a photoshopped spoof. No one will use this; you just apply the iron to see what happens, see the stupid joke underneath it, and then put the cover at the back of a cupboard - or throw it out staright away.

1.0 out of 5 stars A hybrid of two possible books, 12 May 2011

A sequel to Vintner's Luck would have been a good idea, if that's your kind of thing. A book about the film industry might have been a good idea, if that's your kind of thing. Combining the two is a bright idea (a timesaver?) that works for a few pages and then unravels as the tedious detail starts to unfold. If you think cheeseburger ice-cream might be your thing, or a champagne glass that can also be used as a phone, then you might enjoy this combination of incompatibles. Otherwise, if you enjoyed Vintner's Luck (as I did), grieve for the entrancing sequel that now will never be written. If you like books about Hollywood, you have plenty of choice already; so look somewhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scenes from the book well illustrated, 4 April 2011

Yes, it's going to disappoint people who love the book, because it is so very much pared down. The film would have had to be very long to cover the same ground as the book, which goes from 1808-63 in some detail, and then takes you into the present day. The film is so beautiful that I'd have had the patience to watch it for four or five hours, but perhaps that wasn't practicable. As it is, the best thing is to regard the film as showing you scenes from the book, and then imagine the rest for yourself as you read the book again. But if it's true that a lot more was shot and discarded, then we should hope for a 'director's cut' in due course - or at least a release of the DVD with 'deleted scenes'. Renier, Ulliel and Farmiga play with exquisite sensitivity, and the filming is beautiful. The scene where Xas takes wing and plays with Sobran is enough by itself to earn the film five stars.

You could watch this with your auntie - it could have been written thirty years ago. Monogamy and the idea that gays have a kind of ethical code - not all of us are cynical about such things. If you like a quiet night in - a *really* quiet night in - you'll watch this one many times.
