5.0 out of 5 stars Book or Movie, 6 July 2013

This review is from: Push: A Novel (Paperback)
Well I saw the movie and I thought it was horrific, but I wanted to get a little bit more from the story and I wanted to get to know the characters more intimately, and the book is just as dark, cold, stark, lonely, fear-inducing as the movie, but I mean those it all the kindest ways, because the characters in the book are so intriguing and so human that it's so worth the read. The follow up book "The Kid" is a must read too, its a lot longer and follows some of the same characters after the events of Push.

Sapphire's world is like no other. The book is harrowing in detail and in the sense of isolation, however I loved the reading the book and would love to read more about the characters!

Intriguing film from Ice T, lots of insight in the process of creating rap, but also a lot of context information and the performances are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sophomore Novel with a twist, 6 July 2013

Darragh is a great writer - this book has everything. I didn't enjoy it as much as Even Flow, his debut because I got distracted by the entirely female cast, and I wasn't sure what exactly had happened to all the men or whether it was a parallel universe where there had been no men, but overall he is a great storyteller, and he makes the fantastical seem possible.

Golden States
Golden States

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Cunningham's first book, 6 July 2013

So this is Cunningham's first book and he doesn't have it in his catalogue because you can tell it's his first novel, however Im a huge fan of his writing style so I gave it a go. It's a great story, and obviously the author is a great storyteller. I enjoyed the book a great deal I must say. The drama of growing up; the family relationship; the menace that's present in the story - really everything about it is great; it's just that compared to his later works this book lacks finesse. A great yarn!

5.0 out of 5 stars A thriller with a conscience., 3 Oct 2012

This review is from: Even Flow (Paperback)
This book sounds conventional enough; vigilante gang of ordinary men making the bad guys pay for their behaviour, but the truth is that this book is a startling reinvention of the genre of thriller writing. Evocatively cinematic from the outset, it chugs along like a movie. For a short book the characters are remarkably vivid, and this is even more striking when you consider that these are characters we don't see everyday - a homosexual homicide detective, a vigilante gang embarking on a campaign of fear in order to change the world thinks, the same violent vigilante gang sickened by the level of violence they themselves are capable of. The book is intelligent, quirky & thought-provoking, and also has a series of insightful quotations for popular culture and books, such as this one "Protest is when I say: this does not please me. Resistance is when I ensure that what doesn't please me occurs no more". Is it a purely a mans book? I don't think so even though the characters are predominantly male, they are quite diverse and I think their is something for everyone in this book. One can only hope there this novel becomes the movie it is destined to be, and that the author develops some of these characters at least into their own franchise. MORE PLEASE :)
