5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, 21 Jun. 2011
I was looking for DVDs to get my partner to do with Prince William and Kate as she is fascinated with them and loved the wedding. Looking around online I found some single DVD versions and this boxset which contains the engagement story and the wedding story. She absolutely loved it, as it was not only about the wedding but about their personal lives and things and a very good little putchase. Im glad I found it :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A highly enjoyable and entertaining flick, with a twist, 2 Feb. 2004
This review is from: Matchstick Men [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Of all the movies I went to see at the cinema last year, I can choose a handful I thought were great. Films I was pleasantly suprised with and that I enjoyed from start to finish. Matchtick men is one of those films.
This is a very well crafted movie, with a strong script, superb performances and top notch directing. Im not a massive fan of Nic Cage, in fact he usually stars in movies I would rather avoid (such as con-air and gone in 60 seconds) but he really shines in this role. He plays the main lead with such conviction its hard to fault. Playing the twitchy, "not quite with it" role could be over cooked and made to look over acted, but Cage plays the role with conviction.
Sam Rockwell is fantastic (as ever!) and an actor I always enjoy seeing on screen. Ridley Scott really brings the movie together, using some fantastic lighting and camera shots. Overall, this is a very good movie, one that you can come out of the cinema smiling.

3.0 out of 5 stars a good original idea for a movie, 24 Jan. 2004
This review is from: Donnie Darko [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
recent movie outings seem to disappoint me for one simple fact, un-originality and taking ideas from previously made, and far better made movies. I like to go into the cinema and be suprised, be given something new and fresh and to see a director take a few risks now and again. Donnie Darko does just that. I think the film as a whole is good, and for the most part works very well.
The main lead is very convincing as are much of the supporting cast. The thing that suprises me most is that the director made a pretty well polished movie on a relative low budget. The film also has a creepy, almost haunting feel to it due to the direction, the music and a giant talking rabbit :). This film wont be for everyone, and im sure you will love it or hate it. I enjoyed it and felt although the film in its entirety didnt work completely, its nice to see a director that just wants to to make his own movie in his own way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another matrix clone but dull and longwinded, 19 Dec. 2003
This review is from: Underworld [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
kate beckinsale trys her hand at science fiction and hopefully trys to put the (oh so bad) pearl harbor behind her. Sadly she decided on a lackluster and dreary movie by the name of Underworld. I actually went into the cinema with hopes that this film might deliver in the action department if nothing else. What i was given was another in a long line of matrix style cloned movies, the only one of which was actually pretty good was "Equilibrium" starring the brilliant christian bale.
The films directing was straightforward and just plain boring, and wouldnt seem out of place in a tv movie. The main two quibbles i have about this film are the effects and the story. The effects looked decidedly dodgy in quite a few places which really doesnt help when that is a major part of the film. The story started ok, but by the end it really didnt matter what happened to any of the characters because by that point i had past caring. Throw in a few nasty gory moments to try to get the audience going and what you end up with is a mismatch of a movie that fails to deliver. Rent out equilibrium or the original matrix movie than sit through this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!, 12 July 2003
David Brent, possibly the greatest character ever created for the little screen (along with homer simpson and basil fawlty of course!). The first series of the office had me in stitches, i dont think i had ever seen a character such as brent who can get himself into such embarrassing moments. I was really looking forward to the second series, just as long as it was more of the same, but it turned out to be even better!. This is unmissable television, comedy at its very best. Ricky Gervais is on blistering form, with moments of pure genious.
All the other characters have also developed, tim and dawn still secretly in love manage to have some very tender moments, and the (wanna be action man) Gareth is even more moronic than ever. There are some real stand out comedy moments, such as Brents meeting with gareths mate (co writer stephen merchant) and of course, a moment in tv history which can never get worn out no matter how many times its watched, David Brents dance... Superb!. I really hope theres a 3rd series, or just another christmas special, because programs like this are a rare thing.
And as Brenty says "I don't live by 'The Rules' you know, and if there's one person who has influenced me in that way of thinking, someone who is a maverick, someone who does 'that' to the system then it's Ian Botham."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Phonics are back! - welcome back lads!, 16 May 2003
its been a long wait since their previous album (jeep) so ive been really looking forward to this album more than any other probably, luckily its been worth the wait. The phonics seem to have gone back to their roots, lots of loud rock n roll, and great lyrics, but this time there is a new sound, more computerised and digital sounds. This isnt a bad thing at all as it gives many of the tunes a new and original sound, unlike anything the band has produed in the past. There isnt a bad track on the entire album, but some really do stand out as great tracks such as Maybe tomorrow, Help me and getaway. This is a superb album from start to finish and one fans, and music listeners in general should rush out to buy. *****

4.0 out of 5 stars You wont look at your tv in the same way again!, 6 April 2003
I have to start by saying im not a big fan of horror movies, especially U.S teen horror movies, when its just not scary, or creepy, just lame and poorly made with plenty of gore, movies such as Scream or 13 ghosts. The only film that has actually scared me over the years was the original halloween, which i really liked. Im also not a fan or remakes, as its usually a Director taking a classic film and re doing it, only worse.... remakes such as Psycho. But having said that, there are times when a remake actually surpasses the original such as Oceans 11 and The Ring.
The original was a very well thoughtout and well executed piece of movie making, the ideas are fantastic and there are some superbly scary moments, especially the final scenes. Its a very creepy idea and one Hollywood really couldnt make up, its original and scary as anything! so I knew many fans would be very critical of the U.S version, but they need not have worried.
The U.S version isnt what i expected, it sticks very close to the original, but not entirely and is a very well crafted and well made piece of movie making. The main reason why i prefer the this version is because they took the original ideas and moments, and tweeked them slightly to make them even more scary, a good example of this is the final shocking scenes, which "with a bigger budget" can allow for some great CGI work. But its Naomi Watts who steals the show, shes superb and an actress I look forward to seeing alot more of. She gives a fantastic performance and really does pull the movie along, all the rest of the cast to a good job too.
Many fans should be pleased with the way they have retained many of the original films ideas and storyline, but i also enjoyed the way the tape became a sort of journey and the images make sense as the movie goes along. This is one of the best shocker movies to come from hollywood for a very long time (along with the Sixth Sense and What lies Beneath) but it owes much of that to the original, and does it proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hanks cranks up another classic, 21 Mar. 2003
This is a sweeping epic, with some amazing imagery and some superb acting talent on show. Its great to see Paul Newman back for another film along with Jude Law who plays a total wacko crime photographer/hitman and plays the role with relish. But its Hanks who steals the show, the man cant seem to do wrong in the world of movies over the past 10 years of so. I feel this is his strongest role to date, and probably his hardest as he plays a man who's on one side a father, and on the other a cold blooded killer. This is an absolute gem of a film, and one everyone should rush out and see. Sam Mendes deserves a well earned pat on the back.

5.0 out of 5 stars The x files become the ex files, 20 Mar. 2003
9 years, what a long time, especially for a run of a tv show. Over 200 episodes, and plenty of mutants, monsters, ufo's, cover ups and special agents, the show that gripped the globe finally draws its final curtain. I have to be one of the biggest fans of the show, and week in week out would tune in and watch religiously. So i came as a bit of bleak news when i heard the show was finally ending, but im glad to say it goes out in style. Season nine follows agent scully as she trys to find out where her baby came from, is it a miricle or a nightmare. Once again doggett, reyes and skinner return to help solve mysteries and answers scully's fears. All in all this is a very very good season and ranks up there with the best of them. Gillian Anderson is in the spotlight for the entire season and is absolutly fantastic, turning in her best performances to date, and looking gorgeous as ever!. Robert patrick has been my favourite addition to the show and is superb, along with annabeth gish who really gets time to shine in this final season. There are some superb episodes such as John Doe, Trust no 1, and the truth 2 parter. Im really going to miss this show, programs such as the office and 24 are fantastic, but nothing can replace this original and groundbreaking show. Chris Carter, and the crew i salute you all.

3.0 out of 5 stars yikes! giant squeeking spiders!, 18 Feb. 2003
The title of this film really does sum up the finished article, as its a comedy based on all those old 50's and 60's b-movie horror flicks. Ive never been a fan of Ellory Elkayams work, nearly all of his previous movies have been bad (anyone remember the awful Godzilla). So whats the story, well here it is in a nutshell ... chemical truck crashes and sheds its load over a small lake, spiders get infected, grow to huge monsters, go on the rampage and terrorise the locals.
This is one of those films where you can leave your brain at home as its basically designed as a fun movie to past a couple of hours. This movie has its good points and its bad points, on the downside the characters are flat and the script isnt fantastic (but then again, as this is based on those b-movies, maybe the films supposed to be this way). This film has two huge plus points, the spiders are great, they really look the part, crawling and scampering around the town. The other main plus is Kari Wuhrer, probably one of the sexiest women alive! and any scene with her in is well worth paying the ticket fee for :). This isnt a terrible movie, but its not great either, just somewhere in the middle. Worth renting, just maybe not worth buying.
