5.0 out of 5 stars UFO's, Mutants, Mind bending Mushrooms & Comedy, 7 Feb 2003
The x files 6th season, after 5 years and a whole lot of mutant busting and sky searching, quite a few people thought Mulder and Scully couldnt have many more original and exciting case files... how wrong they were. Season 6 sees the usual mix of conspiracy episodes along with a good helping of great stand alone episodes. This season was a very different pace to those before it because it sided more on the lighthearted and amusing, some people didnt like this change of pace, but i thought the show needed it like a new injection of life.
This season holds some of my very favourite episodes such as the superb (all action) episode "Drive", the superb, directs dream "Triangle" and the creepy "Field Trip". There are stand out episodes, but all in all this is a very good all round season by all accounts. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (who just seems to look more beautiful every season!) are fantastic as ever, along with the whole cast including Mitch Pileggi, Chris Owens and the gorgeous Mimi Rogers. A great addition to the x files saga and a must own for all fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars A perfect example of an inperfect sequel, 30 Jan 2003
This review is from: Men In Black II [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I remember seeing the original men in black a number of years ago, it wasnt an amazing film but it was pretty entertaining and had some very clever ideas and super special effects. Will smith and tommy lee jones seemed to be having a whale of a time and the jokes worked well much of the time. Fastforward to the present, and ive just seen the sequel (with the highly original and thought provoking title... men in black 2). I have to start right away by saying what a poor film this really is. Will and Tommy dont seem to really be connecting this time around, as if money was the only reason their standing there. The story is almost a replica of the original, only far worse. The special effect are good in many places, but also stray to poor, industrial light and magic seem to have rushed the sfx, maybe they were concerntrating too much on starwars ep III :), there are plus points (mainly boyle in a bra!).
This is by all accounts a dull film, i cant count the times i checked my watch, its not the worse film of all time and does have its moments but it never seemed to get off the ground. If you liked men in black, watch it again rather than this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fight fire with fire!, 29 Jan 2003
This review is from: Reign Of Fire [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Dragons, castles and helicopters (spot the odd one out). This isnt your average dragon affair, as its set way in the future, 2018 to be precise. So whats the story? Well, in a nutshell a dragon is woken from its sleep in 2002, angry because it missed out on its beauty sleep it multiplies and takes over the world.
Only a handfull of humans survive, on one hand we have Quinn "Bale", who lives in a large fort and wants to try and out live his fire breathing foes and then theres Van Zan "McConaughey", a tough, no nonsense hotshot militia man who wants to rid the world of dragons a.s.a.p. For 2 hours we are treated to some gorgeous special effects, awesome set pieces and some super action. Bale and McConaughey do a super job of bringing their characters to life, but the film is stolen by the dragons. The most pleasing thing about this film is that in many places it strays from the norm, and can give out something quite unexpected. This was the most entertaining and enjoyable action movie of 2002, the 105mins flyby (much like our fire breathing friends). Well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars the truth is finally revealed, 6 Dec 2002
This review is from: The X Files: The Truth [DVD] (DVD)
After 9 years and over 200 episodes, the x files finally reaches the end. Do Scully and Mulder finally get together? are the secrets revealed? well this two part story answers many of the asked questions. The episode revolves around mulder, who after breaking into a maximum secrurity compound is caught and charged with the crime of murder. Hes placed on trail for his life and scully, doggett, reyes and skinner must fight for his freedom. The first part of the story takes place mainly in the courtroom where we get to see some familiar faces, and characters long dead. The second part is far more action packed and brings back a brilliant character from the shows past. This is a fantastic conclusion to a brilliant series, many questions are answered, but as this is the x files... many new questions are asked and are sure to be delt with in the second motion picture. Do mulder and scully get together? well i dont want to spoil it, watch it yourself to find you that truth. The only real quibble i had was the lack of air time for Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish, apart from that this finale has it all. The final 10 minutes are fantastic, and give a real cinematic feel to the show. Ive been watching for 9 whole years and the show has become part of my life. From Tooms to the flukeman, from Deepthroat to X, from the pilot to the finale, its been a truly remarkable ride and David, Gillian and Chris deserve a well earned pat on the back.
TV will never be the same again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great effects, great action .... wooden acting, poor script, 6 Sep 2002
Everyone has been waiting for years and after the terrible (phentom menace) everyone was hoping that george lucas had pulled it all together for the 2nd chapter. Well this film is far better than his previous attempt, there are things i love about this film and things i hate.
The positive things in the film are the special effects, there amazing! all the creatures, landscapes, and especially the final battle scenes are truly amazing, i also really enjoyed the gladiator style battle scene. The soundtrack is pretty good, although it gets very soppy for the love moments.
Things i hate about the film, well the start with the acting is awful, truly wooden, Im a big fan of mcgregor but hes very wooden in this film, natalie portman is also very static but having said that she does look very nice throughout :)....The wost part of the film is the love story, its amazingly corny, and really drags the film down.
A step in the right direction, great effects and awesome set pieces but sadly a poor script and irritating love story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good followup album - toploader moving to the top, 3 Sep 2002
This review is from: Magic Hotel (Audio CD)
When this album was released i really didnt know alot about Toploader as i was more used to listening to the stereophonics and jamiroqui, and the only tune i really knew of theirs was (dancing in the moonlight) so i really didnt know what to expect from this album. I work in a music store so i listen to music every single day and decided to listen this album and i was very impressed. I really enjoyed it for so many reasons, firstly because it sounds fresh and the tunes are uplifting and happy (where as most british rock/indie bands seem to be downbeat). The tracks that stand out for me are Only Desire, which i thought was brilliant, Midas Touch which has a great big band feel to it, and never forgotten which really shows some great song writing. A real hidden gem in the charts and one you should go and have a listen too, i really loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars AN "A" CLASS CLASSIC, 7 July 2002
i must admit, im a bit of a movie buff. Ive seen hundreds of movies and plenty of war movies at that. I must also admit that im a real fan of steven spielberg and films such as "jaws, close encounters, e.t, indiana jones, the minority report" but I have to say Empire of the sun is probably my favourite of them all.
Its a brilliant film in every way, its thoughtful, moving, and wonderfully performed. Bale gives a superb performance and proves that kids can actually act in films. Some scenes really stand out as stunning such as the bombing of the prison camp and the scenes between Bale and the japanese pilot.
This film ranks as one of my very favourites, because its only one of two films (shawshank redemption being the other) that brings me close to tears every time i watch it, and im a grown man!!!! hehe. Not to be missed. *****

5.0 out of 5 stars lights, camera and lots and lots of action! :), 22 Jun 2002
After the moaning and groaning of some fans before season 8, saying things like "ahhh its all over, mulders gone and the show will go bad", how wrong they were. Season 8 was (in my opinion) one of the finest seasons in the shows history, creating some wonderful new characters and brilliant episodes like (alone, per manum) and this 2 part finale entitled "existance". This is a brilliant finale with more twists and turns and some really exciting moments. My favourite scenes were between doggett and mulder as these characters are so different from one another but seem to work off eachother perfectly. The ever beautiful and brilliant Gillian Anderson turns in another fine performance, as does David Duchovny. Annabeth Gish really makes here mark in these two episodes, but i have to take my hat off to Robert Patrick who entered the lions den at the start of the season and has come up trumps, never missing a chance to shine :) ***** stars

4.0 out of 5 stars a good film - a great performance ****, 16 Jun 2002
Sitting down to watch this film, i had no idea what to expect, i hadnt read any reviews and didnt know any of the plot details but I quickly began to enjoy the ride. Training day tells the story of Ethan hawk (a young cop who wants to climb the ranks) who teams up with seasoned cop (washington) who wants to get the freshfaced cop a feel of life on the streets.
From the very early scenes, washington makes an impact, creating a character who is believable but at the same time a little on the edge. Hawk also turns in a very good performance, playing a "scared of the consequences" role similar to the one he played in (gattaca). This film isnt scared to deal with strong issues and the film is all the better for it.
Training day has many twist and turns to keeps you guessing until the very end, and although the ending isnt quite up to the standard of the rest of the film, this is still a very well made and well constructed film in which washington gives one of his finest performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Season 8 - refreshing, new, bright, bold and very very scary, 11 Jan 2002
Ive been a fan of the x files since day 1, and i can remember fans getting very worried about an 8th season "because of a lack of mulder, and new characters appearing", but they shouldnt have worried because its fantastic. Its a season which is refreshing and new, but also goes back to the classic roots of the show. All the eps are well written, especially (Alone, Epidocles, Roadrunners and This is not happening). Robert Patrick makes a real impact and Gillian is great as ever.... DONT MISS IT! BUY THIS NOW!!!!
