The Art of Thinking Clearly: Better Thinking, Better Decisions
The Art of Thinking Clearly: Better Thinking, Better Decisions
by Rolf Dobelli
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.39

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book for anyone curious about how humans work / think., 3 Nov 2014
It's like taking all of those behavioural economics and psychology books, summarising them, putting them on steroids so they pack more punch, and tidying them all up in a book with cross-links for relevant biases.

I own the ebook, have gifted two hardcover editions (to great acclaim), and also own the iPhone app. I am thinking of buying a hardcover edition for myself to have at work for easy reference and to refresh my memory.

They do not have a string to hold them up, the fabric just folds down, which means they are very comfortable to wear and do floor exercises in.

If you're a woman who cares about her full time job and has thought about having a career (the way men have), then you should read this. The anecdotes, the advice, the statistics, everything resonated with me. Building a career when you're a woman is harder than when you are a man, for a multitude of reasons. This book has many stories from real people who accomplished certain things, intentionally or by accident.

Definitely worth a read, especially if you've ever wondered how to make a career and a family happen at the same time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it if you make things that people use, 3 Nov 2014

I have worked in User Experience for 9 years at the time of reading, and I still found value in its stories.

It was an easy read. Broken into three sections, by the time I was done I had forgotten the first one, because the lessons of the last were the most valuable. "Getting people wrong" is easy to forget. "Getting people right" will fuel several conversations you have if you work in a "making things for people to use" industry.

The examples of companies who have used sensemaking, and how they used it were very interesting. Did you know Intel cared about how people use technology? I didn't!

I would not advocate sensemaking as a solution to many problems, but the ones that it can solve, it should solve exceptionally well. It was very good to read that taking more than 6 months to rephrase a problem as an experience, observe the experience, analyse the results, and find groupings, and finally come to a moment of clarity which enables further action, was a) normal and b) a path to success.

A Practical Guide to Information Architecture

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for experienced UX & IA., 16 Sep 2014

I have been designing and building websites since 1997. I have worked on several intranets and many large scale projects. Let's say I have extensive experience in IA. And I still learnt a lot from this book!

Donna gives names to structures, tells stories of past projects, and shares helpful advice like "if you eliminate terminology during user testing, document it, or risk a manager replacing your chosen wording with a rejected one, in ignorance".

It may be harder to digest for complete novices. A modicum of familiarity with IA, intranets and websites as well as their technology is assumed.

I'd happily read it again!

Quips and quotes. I read it cover to cover in one hour. Not worth owning. Flick through one in a bookshop. Then buy the original book from which the stories and quotes are extracted.

What They Didn't Teach You in Design School: What You Actually Need to Know to Make a Success in the Industry

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable!, 16 Sep 2014

I trained as an engineer, and have worked as a designer in IT for 9 years. I'm a user experience architect, if you've heard of UX.
Never having been to design school, much of this book's design school practices and trivia was news to me.
However, all the lessons about presentation (prepare), plagiarism (don't do it), portfolios (show process), hiring staff (work with people you like) and more are in fact invaluable.

Buy this book.

Read it.

And put it somewhere within reach. You'll want to look something up within days.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful., 16 Sep 2014
Most awful dress i have ever touched. The shape would be fine, but the fabric is cheap and the sewing unbelievably bad. Dress had unfinished seams, wonky seams, twisted fabric, and threads hanging off!! Do not buy this dress. The seller has others with better materials.

Also the description here says it's mostly wool. It isn't, it's all cheap (feels horrible on skin) polyester.
