5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and very cheerful, 31 May 2013

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of these budget watercolour pencils. The tints are good and they come with a separate little brush so that you can do the wash to achieve the watercolour effect. I use them to take out with me so that I do not jog my favourite Faber Castell ones about and then I enhance the drawing when I get home. They would also make a lovely present for a child. Another use would be to fill in when you have worn out some of the colours in your main set or to start out with to see if this medium suits your style. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely lovely, 31 May 2013
I have used other watercolour pencils but these are far ahead in quality: they are delightful to use and give beautiful tints, both dry and when water is applied. The effect when a little water is added is amazing and they blend together well. They also give a strong outline or accent when the point is dipped in water. At a price under £8.00 they are terrific value and it is simply not worth using inferior materials.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory quality but ..., 28 May 2013

I bought these to make a change from watercolour pencils hoping they would give a deeper pigment. They arrived with points on them but the first two broke off under the moderate pressure needed to give a deeper tint. The colours are appealing but I do not find them preferable to the pencil type and there is no fine point to add detail. For an all-over wash they would be good but I am not wildly enthusiastic about them for drawing smaller objects.

I find these sharpeners work very well on the slimmer kind of pastels such as the Pentel oil pastels, sold by Amazon in a box of 50 (also reviewed) and less well on the chunkier kind. They do prodece a good point and you need to use them over a container as there is no barrel to catch the bits that drop off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and clear, 27 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book to try to improve my drawing, a hobby I have taken up late in life, It is very thorough and goes from drawing boxes (and other basic shapes), with emphasis on the vital need to check whether the box is above or below eye level, through perspective, light and shade, composition, still life, outdoors, figures, children and some of the media to use. I embarked on it with trepidation because of the effort required but am enjoying sketching the various shapes and doing the exercises. There is a refreshing lack of padding and the writer goes straight to the point with plenty of drawings to copy or to inspire my own and I am gaining in confidence and soon, I hope, in skill!.

These triangular pencils are pleasant to hold and are in attractive and useful colours. They feel soft and rich to use and come packed in a handy case which makes them good to take outside to sketch on the move.

5.0 out of 5 stars great quality and excellent value, 27 May 2013

These are slimmer than some of the chunky oil pastels I have bought elsewhere and that makes them more manageable for me. The range of colours is excellent and they apply readily giving a rich and satisfying effect. To get 50 crayons for this price is amazing. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book and very helpful, 26 May 2013

This book is beautifully produced and thorough in the ground it covers. All possible pastel techniques with the different types of crayon are described such as gestural drawing and hatching and examples given. There are sections on themes like landscapes and light and some demonstrations of how to build up a picture. As a complete beginner, I would have liked more connection between the methods described and their possibilities in a painting and it seems to me to be a book for someone with some expertise to improve their skills. It would make a lovely present for such a person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to be hygienic, 28 April 2013

I bought this product to sanitise my hands before applying eye-drops 4 times a day for someone who has had a cataract operation. First wash the hands with soap and water and then a quick press of the pump, a rub all over the hands and fingers and the odour evaporates instantly leaving me ready for action. The whole process is over in seconds. This 350 ml pot lasts a long time and I shall always have one in future for normal cleansing in the kitchen and toilet.

Play Dead (A Harpur & Iles Mystery)
Play Dead (A Harpur & Iles Mystery)
by Bill James
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrills and comedy on every page, 2 Mar. 2013
This novel is a crackingly good mixture of excitement and humour as we have come to expect from Bill James. It is one of the Harpur and Iles series and portrays their relationship in more detail than some of the others which is fascinating in itself and also explains the bizarre injury Harpur inflicts on Iles, which becomes a leitmotif in the book. The main narrative concerns a murder in a previous undercover scenario but there are new characters and highly comic scenes such as that where Iles goes to the theatre and becomes over-responsive. Descriptions of sleeping rough add atmosphere and different registers in discussions of literature have a subtle humour. Altogether one to buy for yourself or give to a friend to introduce someone else to this skilled writing.
