5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written account of an enduring Hollywood mystery, 30 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mann paints an evocative picture of the early days of Hollywood and the struggles of the men who ran it from keeping censorship at bay. Thoroughly researched, Mann offers intriguing insights into the players at the top of the tree - such as Zukor and Loewe, and the man they got in to keep federal and state censorship at bay - Hayes. He also paints a fascinating account of three actresses - one a major star, now waning, another a stage daughter with a monster of a stage mother and a third, much lower down the pecking order who unaccountably kept getting breaks in big productions. In the middle of Hollywood's attempts to talk their way out of regulation, one of their public faces of propriety was murdered - and another scandal threatened to engulf Hollywood. Mann aims to answer 'whodunnit' and advances a persuasive theory. Is he right? Who knows? But you'll keep turning the pages to draw your own conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy upgrade for iMac - use Kingston Memory Finder to identify correct memory., 27 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Using the Kingston Memory finder I identified this as the correct memory for my iMac. Fitting is easy (instructions on Apple - three screws) but it does take a little force to get it to 'click' into position - I was a little timid at first. Great, easy, simple upgrade for my iMac.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a knife through butter, 27 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like a knife through butter may well be a cliche, but never a truer word was written about these loppers. Deciding to tackle some gorse and coming a very second best with garden shears I ordered these from Amazon - and with super saver delivery the loppers were with me within 4 days. Sturdily constructed with easy to use extension these loppers have made very short work of the gorse - even stems up to an inch thick. The long arms make it easy to get into awkward spots and I've got the job done much faster - and less painfully(!) than I ever would have with shears. Couldn't recommend highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect Christmas Present!, 13 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I hope none of my family read my Amazon reviews or they'll find out what they are getting this Christmas! This beautifully produced book is full of wonderful ideas for creating new and useful items from stuff we often throw away. Ideal for dipping in and out of, it offers simple easy steps to create something wonderful out of stuff we might easily discard or ignore. Themed by season and event it offers something for everyone - and will be a great gift under the Christmas Tree!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, small, steamer - just bought my second!, 5 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After two and a half years of (virtually) daily service my original steamer gave up the ghost. In my experience this is pretty typical of this sort of appliance - more expensive ones have expired sooner, but that is not a bad run for a cheap appliance - so I've just ordered another - and been reminded what a pain boiling vegetables is!

The comments on size are fair - this is smaller than other steamers - so would only really suit a couple or single person - a family of 4 might struggle - but apart from that its a simple, useful appliance.

As it does not use a 'tube' to generate steam, but simply boils water it does take longer to get going than other steamers - so either start if from the kettle, or 10 minutes earlier.

However, if you want a small, cheap, simple steamer, this is a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rattling yarn - but Kindle Edition missing map, 11 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Afrika Reich (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed this great page turner. It is a mix between 'Indiana Jones' action hero getting out of impossible scrapes and 'counter-factual alternative history' like 'Fatherland' - what would have happened if the Nazis had won? I can understand the disappointment of those who read the Economist review and were expecting 'Fatherland II' - a much more thoughtful, bleaker book. This is painted with a broader brush in much brighter colours - but is great fun, nonetheless. One major downside of the Kindle edition is it does not have the map, present in the hard copy (and iBook) that would have made following the action much easier. I am looking forward to the sequel...so clearly signposted in the concluding pages...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent account of the creation of QE2, 9 Aug. 2010
For QE2 fans this is one of the 'must own' books - its a comprehensive description of how the original QE2 came into being and the conflicting forces that played out in her design. That a company, Cunard, then in financial free-fall should have created such a wonderful design icon of the 1960s was little short of miraculous - these authors explain how that miracle came about. Very highly recommended.
