The book arrived without the CD-Rom, so is completely useless. Very poor indeed and i am extremely disappointed that I have wasted my money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh oh oh, yes yes yes!, 3 Mar. 2014

This review is from: AM (Audio CD)
This albums thumps and grinds in swirl of rock and roll. The beats, the hooks, the bass-line catches you from the beginning on a rip-roaring ride. Lyrically this is an album filled with clever phrasing from a decidedly Northern and working class perspective, which explores those in-between relationship events, such as staying at a party in someone's house in the hope of getting off with them at the end of the night or phoning your loved one when you've had a few too many drinks. In this aspect the lyrics recall Pulp at their best, when the listener can identify with the thoughts and feelings of the narrator, and there is no trite cliche here. The melodies take you into unexpected corners and I often wondered how Alex Turner remembers all those words! I can't get those dirty riffs out of my head and I have been listening to this obsessively ever since I bought it. My only regret is having it on my wish list for months before I took the plunge. Buy it and buy it NOW!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Answered Prayers, 20 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Pray To Be Free (Audio CD)
Pray to be Free is an album of darkness and light. The sombre tones of James Levy's Cohen-like voice mingling with the melodic lightness and strength of Allison Pierce's give a sense of depth and personality to the tunes. Those tunes are pleasing from the first listen and the lyrics have an interesting twist on your standard love song. I particularly enjoy the harmonies between the two very different voices, bringing quite a sensual feel to this album.

It's a little bit folky, with a pinch of country and a smattering of rock n roll. A playful, grown-up affair of the heart, but with a dark undertow running through it.

Great stuff - well worth a listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Gorgeous!, 16 Sept. 2010
My phone now looks fantastic. The cover fits beautifully and the hot pink colour is metallic and fabulous! I couldn't be more pleased with it. It looks much posher in the flesh than it does in the pictures.

It is easy to put on and off and allows access to all of the buttons. I would definitely buy this again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raucous and tender by turns..., 13 July 2010
This review is from: Love Tattoo (Audio CD)
This CD was a bit of an impulse buy for me, and I am so grateful for that momentary shopping urge that overtook me! Here we have the kind of album that revives a person's faith in the album format. The faster songs are raucous and sexy: they make you want to be in a smoky bar, drinking and dancing the night away with a handsome stranger. This is not the blatant soft-porn sexiness of our current spate of over-groomed pop nymphets though. This is raw, grown up sexual tension. This is black coffee and whisky; as opposed to chart music's alco-pop adolescent urges. May's smoky, bluesy voice lends a pleasing weight to the mildly saucy lyrics of 'Johnny Got a Boom Boom' and 'Big Bad Handsome Man' among others.

Hallelujah: the ballads are not boring! The low key 'Knock 123' sends shivers down the spine and lets the melody and the voice take you on a journey into a deliciously raw and tender place. The change of pace for the slower tracks melds beautifully with the full on singalong rock and roll of the faster tunes and makes this an album worth twice as much as you are going to pay for it.

This has been my sound of the summer. Can't wait for the next album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Chronological Guide, 16 Oct. 2009
A very useful book, outlining the major art movements during this period of time, and explaining the terms used to describe various different art movements.

This is a very good introduction to post-war art, but not an in-depth study.

The writing style is quite easy to follow and I found it very readable (unlike some art books, which are almost impenetrable).

Definitely worth a look to fill in any gaps in your knowledge, to discover who was involved in which art movement and to get a feel for where things fit together chronologically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Art Students Especially, 16 Oct. 2009
This is a great reference book for someone who is serious about art. I am currently studying Fine Art at degree level and just beginning to write my dissertation.

The book is packed with writings and interviews from a plethora of artists, making it a fantastic reference resource. Anyone who has tried to write a serious essay about an artist will know that it can be difficult sometimes to find valid information on the artist's actual viewpoint, and not a critic's opinion. Reading material that the artist has actually written (or said) can be absolutely invaluable. (Although even the artists themselves can be rather inconsistent at times!)

I don't think that you would necessarily sit and read this from start to end (unless you have a LOT of time on your hands: it is massive), but it is brilliant to dip into and extract the required information. I also like randomly picking things out of it as a lot of the articles are fascinating. (I did not realise how many artists wrote poetry either!)

Highly recommended.

This book is gorgeous. The stories are varied and interesting and the silhouette illustrations are beautiful and fascinating.

One to keep forever, I think.

I read it to a bright seven year old, who loved it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for everyone., 9 Mar. 2009

There are some pros and cons to this exercise DVD, so please consider these before you spend your money on it:

1. It is a great deal of fun to dance for exercise.
2. It is a very high energy workout.
3. You need a level of fitness to begin with (I would say that this is not for absolute beginners).
4. Each section is separate, so you can build them up together as your fitness improves.
5. It is properly choreographed, so is a little bit complicated to follow.
6. You need a decent amount of space to do it; I struggle in my living room with this.
7. There is a warm-up section, but no cool-down one, even though Tracy says this is vital!

All in all, the exercise is good, but you will need to be quite a dedicated sort of person to keep this up. If you are just beginning to exercise, I'd advise starting with something a bit easier, but if you are a bit of a dancer and have some fitness already, it is a good, challenging workout.
