Zardoz [DVD]
Zardoz [DVD]
Dvd ~ Sean Connery
Price: £4.79

3.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre Flying Heads, 30 July 2013
This review is from: Zardoz [DVD] (DVD)
Thus is a seriously weird film. Set in the 23rd century in England it shows how society has broken down and only a few elite live in comfortable surroundings. The majority live outside these communes are ate hunted down by the executioners who are armed and fed by what they believe to be the God Zardoz who appears in the shape of a giant fierce looking head from the skies.
It has a bleak vision of the future as food is scarce and only the telepathic elite manage to make anything out of their existence, problem is whilst others outside the "vortex" fight to survive the chosen few in their communes want to die. They are all immortal as science has progressed so much that they simply re-generate should something befall them. Ageing is a form of punishment for the "renegades". Who still live on the commune's land but in isolation. If you do something wrong you ate punished by being aged 6 months, a year or more depending on the "crime".
The vision of John Boorman is brilliant and surprising for a film released in 1975. The acting and actors let's the film down with some pretty poor acting from Connery, Rampling and the rest of the cast. The film simply goes on too long with scenes that don't make sense towards the end. But any film that has an opening line "The penis is bad and death is good" must be interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars ME-RINE say it properly or suffer the consequences, 26 Nov 2012

A Ruthless, violent, aggressive, selfish, psychopathic bank robber and killer.
What is there not to love? ONLY JOKING. In essence Mesrine was evil I'd like to make this very clear and in my mind deserves the end he gets. Mesrine parts 1 and 2 allow us to journey into the
bizarre and volatile World of Jacques Mesrine who in essence should be hated by everyone, but who in truth becomes a French folklore hero between 1959 and 1979.
The story may have been embellished by it's makers to make the viewer like him more. The story is well told and tells us in great depth of the various trials and tribulations
of an armed bank robber and his crooked companions over two decades. During the film I asked myself "What if you were a normal bank employee doing an honest day's work and this nutter
turns up in your bank armed to the hilt"? Wouldn't be very nice would it?. Mesrine was not a Robin Hood character, he didn't rob banks to give to the poor. He carried out armed robberies in a
selfless and ruthless way often killing innocent by-standers en-route. Vincent Cassel is simply fantastic in this role and in my mind makes the film. The acting is of a very high
standard and the film directing excellent. So why the 5 stars? Well, the film is truly gripping and if you can try watching both parts one after the other then all the better.
This is a very French film, telling a very French story. Be prepared for violence and blatant scenes of gangland crime, but you will watch a well made film telling a very interesting
real life story.

2.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful painting shame about the film, 23 Nov 2012
Strong coffee will be required in copious amounts if one is to watch
This film without falling into a deep slumber within minutes from the start.
Yes the actors are great, yes the scenery and cinematography are excellent, but the story is possibly the most boring ever told.
Boring, yet seemingly boring, excuse my scant use of the English language here but this was utterly mind numbing stuff. There must be an apex a crescendo I kept asking myself? No chance. Pretending to be an arty farty dude who was mesmerised by the pastal colours and tranquil and realistic waterways of Holland is just not me. A good cup of Colombian or Arabica may get you through this and if you can't drink coffee then bon chance!

3.0 out of 5 stars Should have been the first cut!, 23 Nov 2012
This cut is way, way better than the first release. Better character description, more intrigue and somehow a better
explained movie. Bearing in mind that the first version only rates as one star in my film World, three stars in certainly
an improvement. The film is around 30 minutes longer but is altogether a more sequential movie which holds the story
together better and improves on the total mess which was originally released in cinemas around the World.
If we could scrap the cast with exception to the great Peter O'Toole the film may have been almost great.
If you haven't seen Troy then please buy this version. This should have been the first and only cut. As other reviewers
have mentioned, let the Director tell the story in his way and not the way Hollywood perceives we should be watching films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing yet brilliant, 23 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Peter Weir was about 12 when he directed this film and what a disturbingly brilliant film he ended up making.
In fact this was his first major movie, obviously a great director in the making as the film was made on a shoe-string
budget somewhere in the Australian outback in the mid seventies. The film centers on a small village named Paris in the middle of no where.
Odd things happen in this dead-end one horse town, very odd things indeed and the people are not only sinister but almost vulture-esque in their
attitude to hapless drivers who are forced off the road down a hill to finish up either dead or lying wounded bleeding and strapped to a doctor's
surgery table in dreary surroundings. Interested? Not everyone's entertainment, I agree, but the film develops interestingly when a couple of
down and outs try heading towards Paris. After being forced off the road, one dies, one survives and the consequences are dramatic to say the least.
This is a very well thought out story. It would be a brilliant re-make but only if Peter Weir were at the helm. Remember, this film was partially financed
by The Australian National Film board and a partially by a 12 year old's pocket money so there isn't much in the bank for Avatar style special effects.
In fact CGI meant absolutely nothing in 1974 when the film was made. The film is crude, raw often spartan, but that is why it is so brilliant.
For the record I was 12 when this film came out and although an "X" certificate managed to sneak into a cheap cinema in Croydon to watch it with a few mates.
It made an impression on me then and it made an impression on me 6 months ago when I watched it for only a second time. 6 out of 10 cats will dislike the film,
2 out of ten will detest it but 2 out of 10 will love it. Which cat are you going to be?

2.0 out of 5 stars Miami Tripe, 22 Nov 2012
This film will confuse you for the first 15 to 20 minutes, so much so that you start reaching for the remote
to liven up the volume to try and discern what the hell everybody is mumbling about. Then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM,
BANG, CRASH! Your surround sound goes mental and you've annoyed your neighbours and started off a few car alarms
in your street. Colin Farrell please go back to Bruges. You may think it's a shot hole but we loved you in it.
Jamie Foxx, an otherwise good actor is obviously affected by the other actors in this dive of a movie and looks
rather confused most of the time. Michael Mann is however a genius. It must be underlined that Mr. Mann is a genius,
he must be to get away with making movies this bad and still finding endless lines of producers willing to finance
such utter rubbish.
So why give it two stars you may ask? Fantastic eff off sound-track, one of the best sound tracks of any modern film
in recent years. Do yourself a favour buy the CD or download from I-Tunes but don't buy the film as it sucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sir Ben Kingsley scared me, 22 Nov 2012
This review is from: Sexy Beast [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
Sexy Beast is one of those raw British gangster movies that makes you wonder why anyone
in their right mind would ever get involved in the underworld.
Sir Ben Kingsley is so good in this, but I mean so good (remember this bloke played Ghandi),
that he scared the living daylights out of me. Possibly the most psychopathic nut-case the
screen has ever seen. Ray is Ray. Who doesn't love Ray?
The plot is about robbing banks, in this case one particular bank. Does crime pay? Well you
decide. A tremendous film, hope you enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good job it's in Belgium or too many people would spoil it, 22 Nov 2012
This review is from: In Bruges [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
In Bruges is one of those films that sticks in your head with quotes and scenes that you play back
over and over again and then chuckle to your self often in the weirdest places. The man of the match is
Ralph Fiennes by far and away his performance in this is exquisite almost Ben Kingsley-esque in Sexy Beast.
Colin Farrell should really stick to these types of film and forget things like Miami Vice and other tripe he has
been in.
It is funny very funny, it is violent, often very. It captures one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Europe beautifully.
Especially around Christmas Bruges is stunning. Whilst I can understand why this would not be every one's cup of tea it
has made a positive impression on me and it comes highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars N'est pas vegetarien !, 22 Nov 2012

This review is from: Delicatessen [DVD] (DVD)
Quirky, brilliantly filmed, interesting, often comical, well acted, loved the sets.
Dark, macabre, grotesque, often a bit sickening (if you think about it), over-extended
ending which becomes a bit of a farce.
Worth watching but don't rush out to buy it.

This is one martial arts movie you MUST watch. Brilliant, utterly brilliant.
Jet Li is simply fantastic in this. The only down side is a rather slow bit
in the middle of the film, which didn't really bother me.
The fighting is great, the story excellent and the acting good all round.
Finally, the moral of the film is in truth what martial arts is
all about. A Top Class martial arts movie with real grit.
