Diary of the Fall
Diary of the Fall

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and moving book..., 3 Sep 2014

This review is from: Diary of the Fall (Kindle Edition)
A compelling and moving book which examines the complexities of cultural difference, parental relationships, ageing and denial. Sounds heavy but the the narrative moves along swiftly taking you through the narrator's story and the effect of events both past and present to his life. I was moved to buy this book having seen and heard Michel Laub speaking about the construction of this novel - it was fascinating. As always with a translated book, I wonder what I have missed in the subtleties of the language.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK - but there are so many versions to choose from..., 30 Mar 2014

It's fine but, for me, visually a bit unsatisfying. There are so many versions of this game available freely as apps that a user can afford to be picky!

Nice, simple, free app. Does what it says on the tin and gives a clear view of the London underground system!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great app, shame about the noise..., 30 Mar 2014

This review is from: MyTrails (App)
This is a wonderful idea but unfortunately the app interfered constantly with my Kindle Fire. Messages kept coming up every 20 mins or so telling me I hadn't got my GPS switched on (why would I, I was at home!) and every now and again a very pretty, but ultimately very annoying, musical sound was emitted from the device. I had to get rid of it to prevent myself being woken up in the night if I had forgotten to turn the sound down. Pity

5.0 out of 5 stars Best product of its kind, 30 Mar 2014

I have been using these cleansing wipes for years and I find they are the most effective product of this kind. I have very sensitive skin and this is one of the few products I can use with confidence. I find this product more efficient than cleansing lotions which have to be applied and then wiped off. It seems to be becoming more difficult to obtain through UK high street supermarkets and chemists.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the money, 2 Mar 2014

A cursory description that could be obtained from a free cinema brochure. Scarcely worth one star. Wait for reviews in papers and film magazines - they will be just as informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterclass in Novel Writing, 20 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book adopts an intriguing narrative structure, with storylines running parallel to one another. It challenges notions of romantic love and presents the dilemma of physical attractiveness as opposed to physical beauty. I put it couldn't put it down. The descriptions of the landscape was almost like having a Sidney Nolan painting in front of you. Just brilliant

5.0 out of 5 stars An elegant and sturdy trolley with multiple uses, 19 Nov 2013
I was absolutely delighted with this sturdy, easily assembled and elegant trolley which I am using as a television stand. The photograph on the Amazon website doesn't do the item justice and there is a subtle curve to the shelves which you can't quite see. The trolley arrived very promptly indeed and was well packed. Even a klutz like me could assemble it - it slots together easily without the need for tools or even the instruction leaflet!

Some of it is really funny stuff and some rather wordy (and pointless - but not in a good way).

Battles in the Desert & Other Stories
Battles in the Desert & Other Stories
by Je Pacheco
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle and poetic, 14 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Pacheco seems to be little known in the UK and this is a great pity. He is held in high esteem in his native Mexico, his books and poems being used as school texts. 'Battles in the Desert' is a wonderful story but is probably best read in its original Spanish where the use of poetic language and rhythms are more in evidence. This is not to say that the English translation is without merit and it does convey the fear of and disappointment in those in positions of power. Superficially the story is of an adolescent boy's innocent crush for an older woman. It is told by the main character, now an adult, looking back to a former time in his life. With great subtlety, the reader is informed of the socio/political circumstances in 1950s Mexico City. However, to make you think even harder, the narrator admits his unreliability, 'I remember…I don't remember,' ('Me recuerdo..me no recuerdo').
