A little disappointing as not all poems that Wilfred Owen wrote are in this book, including some of the very famous ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jennifer Pike triumphs in otherwise mediocre selection, 19 April 2014

Superb playing of the concerto by Jennifer. Sensitive but demonstrating the bravado needed for this horrendously difficult work. I am won over by a piece that I had thought previously not to be of his highest calibre. It would have been nice to have had accompanying works on the disc which reflected Sibelius's stature rather than a collection of his less impressive pieces. Tapiola and other such glorious poems would have been a perfect accompaniment to Ms Pike's triumphal interpretation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A triumphal insight by Richard Dawkins, 21 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fascinated as I have been by books by this scientific giant, here we have a first insight into how it all began. It was intriguing to read how his early life, through his years in Africa, the contentment of his childhood, and his eventual time as a student in Balliol College became the platform for his own fascination in the discussion of nature and nurture in the animal kingdom, leading to the publication of his masterpiece 'The Selfish Gene'. The book stops at this point. The second volume is due in a couple of years hopefully. I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars What craftmanship - but hold on a minute!, 27 Nov 2010

A beautiful set of CDs of committed playing in all respects. The only question is that, having transferred a few onto my iPod I note that the illustrated cover at the bottom left of the iTunes library doesn't match the cover on the CD, to the extent that e.g. Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony is conducted by Riccardo Muti on the CD but by Vladimir Ashenazy in iTunes! Also the 'Manfred' Symphony is not conducted on the iTunes cover by Muti but by Rostrapovich. I'm not quite sure what is going on here but whatever the entanglements, the performances are to die for and so I listen to them, marvellous as they are, with open ears and blinkered vision. It's difficult to go to sleep when these beautiful and stirring moments are buzzing round the brain.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a start to the morning!, 16 Nov 2009
Having been told recently that I need more fibre in my diet, specifically oats, I bought this little beauty. It makes the most deliciously smooth porridge. One and a half cups of rolled oats, two cups of milk, two cups of water and a smidgin of salt (1/4 of a teaspoon) Mix. Leave overnight on low and in the morning you have a porridge to die for. We've tried a couple more recipes which have been very successful, (gammon; casseroles). We've only had the 48721 a short while but already we're hooked. Give meals plenty of time, longer than the recommended time is no problem. But if you get one, don't let it languish in the back of a cupboard as some of my friends have done with their own particular model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Handy!, 27 Aug 2009

The Zoom H2 Handy Recorder (a) arrived intact with all its accessories and (b) lives up to its hype. It's compact, relatively easy to use, despite the comprehensive guide book which is at times a little repetitive, and produces immaculate sound reproduction. Only having recently purchased the device I have still to utilize all its potential but I am looking forward to recording concerts which include my own music and taking it out into the field to record birdsong.

Both CDs (Series 2 & 3) arrived in quick succession and I was entirely satisfied with the sender's care and attention to my needs. Seeing that these series get few , if any, repeats on the box, I have greater reason for treasuring them.
