Very thorough and updated, 22 Nov 2010
I read this book many years ago and I was struck by the sensitive way the author approached the subject. I believe that Robert Kee is English, not Irish but he obviously has a love of Ireland and its people. It does jump around a bit because I think it was written for TV and is naturally in chunks but that just made it easier to read for me - I tend to dip in and out. If you want a good balanced view that helps to explain how things got to where they did in the dark days, you will enjoy it. It seems to have been updated to include the Good Friday agreement and beyond.
