5.0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding, 21 Oct. 2012

There has been much controversy among my peers for some years now as to what makes a singer a good singer and a songwriter a good one. Names dropped range from Bob Dylan via Bert Jansch to Richard Thompson and Leonard Cohen. Verdicts seem to imply that all these are giants, but "not really good singers" and "not exactly classic songwriters" - At the end of the day this is all academic babble: Listen to those guys (and many more) or, like with the great advent of this DVD, even watch them, and if you're not completely square-headed the magic will unfold!

Here we have Kevin in his overall, for half of the concert just Kevin with his limited guitar playing and restricetd vocal purity working true wonders: Just check out a few: 'Amsterdam', 'Saviour', 'Dance Of The Bourgeoisie', 'Pretty Park', 'The World Is Full Of Fools' and above all a breathtakingly raw version of 'Marjorie Razorblade' ... This man was a giant, and the second half brings out some fine interaction with Zoot Money's keyboard adding to the tight performance. A true gem of TV history in good technical quality, thanks to Germany's WDR!

This DVD is also a good offer for all those who refused to dig into what they thought was not a "good singer" or a "good songwriter". Kevin Coyne was more than that: He was a true artist, someone who could bring all his "Weltschmerz" and the 'Ways of the World' to a boiling and bubbling concoction of sheer irresistibility!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific - and I miss him very much!, 21 Oct. 2012

This review is from: One Day In Chicago (Audio CD)
One Day in Chicago brings back Kevin at his strident best - matching his mid-1970s peak. Carefully arranged numbers alternating with tracks improvised on the spot, and vital contributions from Langford and PVC, not forgetting Kevin's son Robert. Listen closely to "Way of The World" as loud as your neighbours will tolerate and you'll bathe in the magic of one of Britain's best singer/songwriter ever. "Britischer Cowboy" sums up what phase II - or was it III - of his life (Helmi/Germany) added to the outstanding artistry of a true colossus.

Gone much too soon...

5.0 out of 5 stars Stevie - and Spencer !! and Pete!!, 21 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Listening to this almost complete set of SDG version 1 tracks after all these years stll does not solve the riddle: What were the contributions of the other band members rather than just Stevie's? Spencer's guitar - especially on the more bluesier, jazzier numbers - seems to be vital as a driving force, and Pete York's drumming is plainly versatile jazz drumming. Yet it is young Stevie's piano/organ and voice that dominate. So each track is also a sad testimony of the impossibility of this personnel continuing for long.

Great titles from jazz to gospel, and the hit parade tracks are possibily the less interesting offers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Animals Complete - all things good and bad, 21 Oct. 2012

This review is from: The Complete Animals (Audio CD)
Hearing the CDs in one go reveals that the Animals were a "two-classes band": Burdon and Price absolutely top, the others mediocre. Worst is that guitar - out of tune and out of ideas most of the time. Anyway, the sheer blues power of Burdon and Price and the rawness of most renditions are still attractive and largely unrivalled...

Check out Story of Bo Diddley, For Miss Caulker and Take It Easy alongside the well-known hits

Davy Graham had everything a good musician needs: Creativity, Intelligence, Emotion, The Zeal to work hard and practice - if only he could have overcome his terrible addiction...

I had the vinyl of this and lost it somewhere on my way through life. It is great to have it again and enjoy the unique blend of the vocals with the instrumentation of reeds and acoustic guitar plus rock rhythm group! And though the range of styles and topics from "Belladonna Moonshine" to "Raid" nmay be a bit eclectic it is nevertheless an enteraining and meaningful contribution to good musical entertainment.
