From the brilliant opening guitar chords of 'Respectable Street', and on through 'Generals & Majors', 'Cuba', 'Rocket From A Bottle' and 'No Language In Our Lungs' this album reaches incredible heights of songwriting and musicianship. The originality of ideas and sheer exuberance of the band led by Partridge & Moulding absolutely knock you for six, and although some of the lyrics may have dated slightly, there's no escaping their provocative and enduring relevance. I was also lucky enough to see them live before Andy Partridge's stage fright kicked in and that memory continues to burn brightly as I know it will now never be replicated. To quote Coco Chanel: fashion fades, only style remains the same.

I was in a bedsit in Leicester in 1983 when the strains of "Walk Out To Winter" came out of the radio; straight away I knew this boy was a cut above the rest. The album was purchased within days and was played to death - it was perfectly clear that Roddy Frame was a supreme talent. I've just seen his 30th anniversary show at Drury Lane where he revisited the whole album; needless to say the reception was ecstatic for songs which sound just as good today - a clear sign of the album's 'classic' status. The only criticism I have is that he doesn't tour more often, but maybe the critical acclaim following this latest tour will change all that. I certainly hope so as people this gifted don't come along in life very often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such a relief to have these songs re-released!, 24 Mar. 2008
'Showpeople' was an album made up of perfect pop songs with brilliant arrangements that have never been bettered anywhere. I still find it difficult to believe that this album got deleted and has taken so long to re-emerge, albeit in a re-packaged form. It's a bit like those short-sighted idiots in charge of BBC archives who destroyed most of the Peter Cook & Dudley Moore programmes.

My only slight complaint about this album is the inferior versions of 'Cry me a river' and 'Ecstasy' which had better recordings on 'Showpeople' but otherwise this is marvellous stuff. Anyone who thinks Mari Wilson was just a pop novelty with a bee-hive should waste no more time and quickly get hold of a copy of this.
