This is the best of Jill Paton Walsh's continuations of the Sayers characters into the 1950s. Her characters are wholly credible as ageing Peter and Harriet and their family, and Bunter. The plot lacks the sense of menace of Sayers at her best, but this remains a well-readable book with a good plot and good sense of place and time. Plus some deft jokes.

Most modern music is lost on me, but this is is, while undoubtedly modern, a really confident contemporary voice producing excellent and enthralling music. Much melody and an up-to-date composition evoking real feeling and inclusion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really a sequel, 26 May 2013

'Dear Lupin' was simply hysterical. 'Dear Lumpy' is not. Roger Mortimer's letters to his wayward son were full of wonderful hyperbole and vivid metaphor that made me laugh out loud again and again. His letters to his daughter being admiring. fond and gentle simply lack the edge that his anger and frustration with the son provoked. The comments of the daughter are as vapid as those of the son. This book would give a little more insight (should you want it) into this idiosyncratic, horsey, right-wing family with a mother who is portrayed as pretty well crackers. Suitable for a short plane journey.
