Robust, moderately dark, polarised lens glasses.
Won't cut a dash on the beach, but excellent for walking, fishing, gardening and other active outdoor activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine writing: a memoir of life on a working sailing vessel, 24 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The last grain race (Hardcover)
A first edition in good condition. I was very pleased with the service from this seller. A replacement volume for a copy lent and not returned.

This is the account of Eric Newby's experiences as an apprentice on one of the last 4 masted sailing barques, on a round trip to Australia just before the 2nd World War. It is very well written, and a foretaste of his illustrious travel writing career. It is a direct and vivid link to the harsh world of life on a large working sailing vessel, manned by very few sailors, and passing through some of the most inhospitable seas of the Southern Ocean. It makes today's gap year experiences rather trivial. It is well illustrated by Newby's own photograph, and as a tailpiece carries a sail and rigging plan of his ship, the Moshulu.

I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in the sea, sailing vessels, and/or the work of Eric Newby, one of the finest travel writers of his generation.

The Gilgit Game: Explorers of the Western Himalayas, 1865-95
The Gilgit Game: Explorers of the Western Himalayas, 1865-95
by John Keay
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly relevant history of this embattled part of the world, 22 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Highly researched and well written, this companion to 'When Man and Mountains Meet'
gives a further in depth history to the tortured history, politics and personalities involved in the 19th century European, Russian and Chinese contact with the region. It gives ample scope for reflection as to the unlikelihood that its mores and institutions will comply with Western templates, and the futility of attempting to impose them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful field guide to this large and varied region, 22 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Again a replacement volume. My last copy was too far gone through use and water damage. I had tried the Krys Kazmierczak guide which is its immediate competitor. While the illustrations in this guide are better and more lifelike, its distribution maps lose a little in being occasionally separated from the text.
My suggestion is to have both!

5.0 out of 5 stars Updike at his finest, 22 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought as a replacement for my water damaged hardback first edition. Well worth the re-read. Follows Rabbit Angstrom through his mid and later life trials and travels, Far from being at rest, he is put through family and social dramas against a background of late 20th century USA. It is beautifully written, and an engaging account of this apparently prosaic hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating classic history of an overlooked area of exploration, 22 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This history of the exploration of the mountain boundaries of NW India and its connections with central Asia in the mid 19th century gives a vivid and gripping account of this harsh and demanding region.
The altitude and severe conditions were challenging in the extreme, and the exigencies of the political and religious power struggles of the region made for few returning alive or unscathed.
The author John Keay has researched the history from Geographical Society and other contemporary journals, and has made an excellent narrative out of the confusing and often vague and contentious accounts.
The history gives further background to the continuing political and military intrigues of the region and gives pause for thought as to whether this will ever be a settled and peaceful landscape. I was very pleased to have this second hand volume, located promptly via Amazon

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, irreverent spoof autobiography, 7 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very funny and scurrilous view of Hollywood in its glory days from the view point of Tarzan's chimpanzee companion. Includes some brilliant amoral views from beneath, and some interesting conceits, such as the hunting and capture of wildlife as a human ambition to save his fellow creatures from the perils of the wild.
With the Chapt 8, 'omitted on legal advice' it peters out a bit at the end, and is a little too long, however a well-worth while holiday read.
