5.0 out of 5 stars Give it the brush off..., 14 July 2014
I was a bit disappointed with this accessory. I used it to clean some small parts from a welder which had become covered in surface rust. machine screws, little plates for the copper cable and two springs. This brush was fine at the start but the brass bristles are very fine and it fell to pieces. The 'bristles' are too thin and they're not held in tight enough. It's a common fault with these kinds of brushes from many manufacturers. It lost so many of its bristles (over two thirds), it went into the bin.

I was a bit disappointed with this accessory. I used it to clean some screwdriver shafts which had become covered in surface rust. I tried some wet and dry with a squeeze of WD40 but the rust was not shifting. This brush made a better job of it but by the fifth screwdriver, it had fallen apart. The 'bristles' are soft but with an abrasive coating. I bought 2 of these so I am already on to using the second one. The first one had lost so many of its bristles, it went into the bin.

Got two of these to connect Mac Minis to flat screen monitors. They are a perfect length to go from the monitor to the thunderbolt adaptor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give yourself a voice..., 16 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A cracking piece of kit - more later.

Only 4 stars? Software was a nightmare to install on Windows and no equivalent complimentary software for Mac OS - an expensive optional purchase.

Bad points first. There are only two.

The guide states that the device can be used with Mac OS but the disk that arrived with the device only contained Windows software. It's a pity because my MacBook beats my PC hands down speed wise and they both have similar processors and RAM. I could have purchased software for use on my MacBook but it's expensive.

The second bad point is installation. I abandoned the installation after 35 minutes - I had to go out. The drive, which reads and writes a variety of formats and disks (CD, DVD and Lightscribe) had trouble reading the accompanying software disk. I tried the disk in several other computers with the same results so clearly not a drive issue. Just a lot of squeaks as if the drive was trying to read a bad disk and yet there were no marks on the disk. I put it down to a bad pressing at the disk copier. maybe a bad batch. No equivalent download from the Nuance website.

Now the good points... there are many.

For what it does, it is incredibly tiny. The version I received has 2GB of flash RAM and can record hundreds of hours of speech.

You begin by training the software to recognise your voice. In the past, I trained the system by repeating words displayed on the screen several times and the software worked out a general sample but this was not always accurate and it was very, very boring.

Training has moved on. You select one of a range of texts that take between 10 and 20 minutes to read. Mine took about 14 minutes, it was the inaugural speech of John F Kennedy. (I resisted the urge to impersonate his accent.) The reason for this reading is to establish your speech patterns including phonemes and cadence, i.e. the sounds of the word structures and the speed and rhythm at which you speak.

The passage you select should be read in a normal tone, at a normal speed as if you were speaking to a group of people. Speed is important but not as important as accuracy. You can print your chosen passage and you might want to read portions of it first to familiarise yourself. You can read the passage from the screen if you choose (I did - Save The Trees!) but you read it into the device. Set the device to Dictation, point the microphone towards your mouth and hold it in your hand or use the clever stand that flips out.

Once you have finished reading the passage, you connect the device to your computer and the software analyses your speech against the passage you selected and makes the necessary adjustments to recognising your voice. Then your speech profile is complete. Additional speech profiles can be recorded and analysed so that several people can share the device.

Speech recognition is rarely 100% accurate and this is no exception but it is consistently high and the quality of the recordings at the Normal Quality is very good, even set in meeting mode. The setting profile allows the device to become more sensitive or less sensitive depending on the environment.

In the box you get the recorder, a short USB cable to connect it to your computer, a basic manual for the recorder (three models are referenced), the licence code for Dragon Naturally Speaking, a discount coupon for upgrading to version 12 of the software. Batteries ARE included - yep, two AAA batteries are there to get you up and running quickly.

I find the included software to be sufficient for purpose and it is accurate.

You can choose to import the text to MS Office software or DragonPad, a proprietary text based editor. I have used it successfully in several meetings - make sure you get everyone's permission first - and it is great for taking notes if you have to write the minutes of a meeting.

Unfortunately, it will not transcribe the voices of everyone at the meeting into text - that's just not possible at the moment - but the novel you have always dreamed of writing is a step closer if you can just talk aloud - perhaps when you are travelling alone in your car.

All you need to do is say "Once upon a time..." and you'll live happily ever after as the speech turns into words and the words turn into a best-selling, blockbuster novel!

Highly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sum up the message of this book in two words..., 16 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Common Sense.

The only person this book is likely to help is the author. Helping him to get richer.

It's an over-wordy rehash of the work pioneered by others with a bit of a spin on.

There are five (5) diagrams/illustrations/photos in this book - The photo is the author.

How does this book speak to the visual learner? It doesn't. Quoting others, putting his spin on the quote and its significance and speaking of his personal experiences is not the answer. 209 pages is too long.

I've been looking for a guide to help me focus on what I want for the future and this book does not have it.

If you want to be successful, there is no substitute for hard work. Seriously. I'm not talking about gruelling physical labour, I'm talking about good honest to goodness effort. The internet is a vast repository of knowledge that will help you in your research.

Set yourself realistic goals. Learn to take smaller steps to reach the greater heights. No one expects you to leap to the top of a tall building in one bound but there's no reason why you cannot take several trips in the lifts to get to the top.

The main problem I see in people is that they set goals that are too far outside their reach and time-scale. They are selfish for that promotion, that advancement and they forget their peers. They treat people with contempt. They want it now, with minimum effort and little cost. It's the celebrity culture.

If you want a better job, a brighter prospect, a rosier future, then you must be prepared to work for it. Only then will you appreciate the sacrifices you have made and the sacrifices others have made to put you where you end up.

If you start things and then lose interest, you need to take a look at your life. Ask yourself why you started something and lost interest. It might be cost, ill health or any other reason. Make a list of all the things you started and abandoned and why. Go down that list and pick one thing. Finish it. Pick the easiest thing to finish. Paint that door frame. Stop that table wobbling. Do a good job so that you don't have that problem again. When that's done, choose something else to finish. As you progress through the list, the tasks become more complex but your experience makes them easier.

You'll learn more about yourself by doing things for yourself and not reading this book.

This book is not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sticky backed magic., 26 April 2014

5 Star products may get a bad press because they are seen as a cheap alternative to branded names.

This is not the case. I have been purchasing 5 Star products for over 15 years and I have seen a huge improvement in the quality of what they offer.

So it was a done deal for me when I chose these self adhesive A4-sized labels.

I am fitting out a workshop at home and with hundreds of component drawers and quite an inventory of spare parts I need to label the drawers to identify items quickly.

These labels are equally at home in a laser or ink-jet printer and provide a good stable background for the photographic images of parts.

The self-adhesive backing provides a strong grip with a little wiggle room for repositioning during application.

I know these get used for parcel labels amongst other things but for me, those tiny little components labels are a dream.

Highly recommended.

NOCO Genius Smart G3500UKCar Battery Charger
NOCO Genius Smart G3500UKCar Battery Charger

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart... and good looking!, 18 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I still have a metal case car battery charger that has a switch for 6 and 12V, a tiny meter and a couple of leads. I have never been able to work it properly because the manual isn't clear enough. It lists times for different battery sizes, different voltages but it's not an accurate way to work.

I chose the NOCO Genius G3500 Smart Battery Charger because it looked like simple set up.

I wasn't disappointed.

Made in the United States, it is fully safe for even a complete novice like myself.

There is no guesswork, no charts or tables to consult,

There's a single button 'MODE' to press. It cycles through the options for 6 or 12V batteries, small or large. With all the computerised bits inside, it constantly monitors the charge on the battery and LED indicators let you know how the charge is progressing.

I recently picked up an old petrol lawnmower with electric starter. The lead-acid battery wasn't in the best of condition. I remember one of my Uni modules focussed on secondary (rechargeable) batteries and the dangers of not maintaining batteries properly. A process called sulfation occurs that eventually renders the battery unchargeable.

However, some batteries can be revived using special tablets (from Bat-Aid) that get dropped into the battery (not sealed batteries) and use of pulse conditioning. The G3500 is able to provide this pulse conditioning. The computerised bits analyse the battery and, if it determines the battery can be revived and recharged, it will just do it. It may take several cycles of charging and discharging a bad battery in order to get a decent length of use from it - the same way that companies suggest you charge your phone or laptop battery fully and then discharge it fully up to five times to properly condition those batteries.

I guess that there will always be those batteries that are well past any kind of treatment. That might be because they have been stored incorrectly over a long time.

Anyway, I'm glad I chose the G3500 because it has already paid for itself - no new battery needed for the mower! Small specialist batteries can be so expensive!

I haven't got around to mounting the unit on the wall yet, I'm still rearranging the garage and I will fit it when I find the best place for it. In the meantime, the leads are long enough - over 12 feet (about 3.6m). The crocodile clips for regular battery terminals also have what looks like 4mm banana plug sockets. It's not mentioned as an optional purchase but I guess a set of leads could be made up with banana plugs at one end and spade connectors at the other end for very small lead-acid batteries.

The manual is small and easy to read if your eyesight is good. The instructions are clear and it's easy to familiarise yourself with the function of the charger.

Some other functions can only be found on the 'geniuschargers' website.

This version came with a moulded UK plug and 3A fuse.

Ready to use, out of teh box.

HIghly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not full of hot air!, 23 Mar. 2014

Working with more delicate computer circuits forced me to look at alternate measures to soldering. After I received this item, it developed a fault and did not heat up.

An email to the seller resulted in a quick reply and so began an email conversation on how to reset the device.

Alas, despite a replacement part, it was dead.

The seller sent a complete replacement device which works magically and I have been able to continue my work with this very handy device.

Useful for when even the thinnest soldering iron tip is too broad for delicate surface mounted work, this is ideal and comes with a set of three nozzles to direct the heated air over broad or narrow areas to re-flow the solder.

I also find it handy on it's lowest heat setting (150 degrees) for heat shrink tubing and softening Polymorph when a tub of warm water is not to hand.

It is also a handy tool for drying the surfaces of circuit boards and testing temperature sensitive switches and components.

Just as several others have done, I had to retrofit the appropriate earth connectors between the metal casing and the earth point. Be sure to test the earth connection on each of the top, rear, front and bottom panels. The paint is a very good insulator - you will need to remove some of it.

I'm not just highly recommending the item but I am also recommending the excellent customer service!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea for Mother's Day..., 23 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whether it's Mother's Birthday, Christmas or any other special occasion, this is a great compilation of many old and new favourites.

Not all classical music was written before 1900!

World famous names such Andre Rieu, Katherine Jenkins and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa along with Il Divo and The Priests add their own distinct atmosphere to this compilation of instrumental and vocal arrangements.

They may not all be to your taste but you can always add your favourites to your iTunes playlist or other MP3 device and dip into the others at a later time.

I bought this as a gift for my Mum and she loves it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A bright idea!, 23 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fed up with standard E14 incandescent candle bulbs failing at the most inopportune moments and trying to move towards a more eco-friendly and power-saving alternative, I bought the two of these to use in my magnifier lamp on my workbench.

With a plastic lens, heat from regular bulbs caused the image to warp a little after several hours use. Switching to a lower wattage lamp reduced the brightness but not the heat. The yellowish/orange glow of incandescent bulbs was a hindrance and 'daylight' bulbs were more expensive and brought more heat problems.

This bulb uses just 5W and produces as much light as a 40W regular bulb. It runs much cooler and the white light is more like daylight in its whiteness. One of the ways to compare the whiteness of a light bulb is to look at it's 'colour temperature'. For example, fluorescent bulbs are blueish at around 5200K and incandescent light bulbs are around 3000K which is why they are more of a orange yellow colour. Match flames and Candles are between 1700K and 1900K

By contrast these LED bulbs are 6500K which makes them closer to daylight temperatures and are therefore ideal for applications where you need a good source of white light.

I find it easy to work under this light. Less strain on my eyes means fewer headaches when I am working for several hours at my desk.

Apart from the usual benefits of lower electricity usage and excellent light output, the LED bulb lasts longer than an incandescent bulb - up to 20,000 hours. Incandescent bulbs typically last up to 2000 hours if they are used sparingly. The LED bulb incorporates a small switching mode power supply that converts the 240V from your mains supply down to the lower 3V that LEDs use.

Th light is instant unlike fluorescent bulbs which rely on a ballast and a starter to operate correctly, both of which can fail.

This item is highly recommended for its eco-friendly features and clean, clear. crisp white colour.
