5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - disapointing service, 22 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This volume continues the trend for excellent story telling and artwork and is strongly recommended to anyone with the slightest interest in the Batman genre. Snyder is without a doubt the best thing to happen to the character in the last thirty years. Since purchasing volume one of this series I have consistently closed the covers, gone onto the computer and placed an order for the next in the sequence. Unfortunately, despite the fact that my copy arrived today (well within the scheduled service offered by Amazon) this book has actually been on sale in the Forbidden Planet chain for over two weeks! Sort of makes placing an advanced order a bit redundant eh? WHAT IS GOING ON AMAZON?

4.0 out of 5 stars Emerse (or should that be - submerge?) yourself in this for a good read, 27 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fascinating and almost unbelievably in depth review of the life of one of those Victorian pioneers who has gone unrecognised until now. The story of a half-hearted clergyman whose real passion was the development of submarines. The truth bending exercises employed to inspire belief in his dream are sometimes outrageous and the chronicler has done so much research you feel that he almost knew Garrett.

Read this if for no other reason than his submarine "Resurgam" must eventually be raised from the seabed of Wales and when it is, you will be an instant expert on the man behind the dream. - A good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seconds are not always better, 27 July 2013

There is no doubt that Lenka is a stunning lady with a voice to die for but this album was a disappointment mainly because of the quality of the songs. Her first album was varied and quirky with a quality range of styles that (although not brilliant) complimented each other and made listening always tolerable and occasionally enjoyable. I waited to see how this was to develop only to find that rather than improving, the second album found Lenka's vocal talents wasted on a range of cheesy 'Bubble-Gum Pop' songs that really could only appeal to a twelve year old girl (perhaps that is all that her A&R team think she is only suitable for!)

One of those albums I wont play again - shame because someone so talented deserves better promotion if we are to enjoy her skills for anything more than a year or two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chuck comes through again, 14 Jun 2013

If you are a Chuck fan like me, its hard to find fault with such a nice guy, but to be honest, one or two of his films would have been comfortable living with Bernard Mathews (if you are not British - he is the biggest Turkey farmer in the UK). The Cutter however, is NOT one of them. A really well paced and entertaining film which manages to serve as an effective vehicle for Mr Norris while having a moderately intelligent storyline. Genuinely recommended if you are a fan and a good junping on point if you are not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chuck Norris - the marmite of film goers (you love him - you don't), 9 May 2013

I love Chuck Norris - there, I am a 56 year old hetrosexual male and I have a hero - live with it!

Chuck is not the worlds greatest actor but he does have charm and charisma. Almost all of his stories are morality plays but lets be honest that is what we want to see. We need assurances that good will ultimately prevail over evil and that giving a damn about our fellow man and being prepared to suffer for what we really believe in is not a bad thing at all.

Chuck is the John Wayne of the post seventies generation and we all need that kind of role model. Delta Force 2 ticks all the boxes but is not perhaps the best horse to come out of the Norris stable. As a stand-alone film it is good enough but as a sequel to its higher-budget predecessor it feels more than a little unsatisfactory. Having said that its a good way to spend an hour and a half (isn't every chuck film?) but it is more of a blokes movie and is as far removed from 'chick-flickerie' as an elephant is from ballet dancing. But lets be honest, if you are reading this review then that is what you wanted to hear anyway (and good on-ya!).

4.0 out of 5 stars It's all a matter of taste, 9 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hearts in Atlantis is based on a short story by Stephen King. In His book 'Stephen King Goes to the movies' he concedes that this film does not work for him, despite excellent acting and performances and a respect for 'the spirit' of the film.

Who am I to argue with Mr King? Never mind, I will anyway.

The original written story has some serious links to the epic 'Dark Tower' series and these are not really even acknowledged in this film but despite that, this film is well acted, engaging and fundamentally good. The dark elements of the story add a pervasive air of menace to what is essentially an exploration of childhood romance, poor parenting, naievity and regret but there is so much charm to the way in which the story is told that ultimately, you actually give a damn for the protagonists and rejoice in their small victories and feel pain at their defeats. I don't care if you are a Stephen King fan or not, you don't need to be to enjoy this film. If you enjoyed 'Stand By Me' you will almost certainly enjoy this - the story is different but the spirit is the same. Give it a go before it becomes so rare that you wont have the chance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Carrie - the Musical?, 9 May 2013

I purchased this out of curiosity. I had the opportunity to see the RSC version some years ago, turned it down and have regretted it ever since. The concept seems bizarre but the product is (I am ashamed to say) quite entertaining. I have never really understood why Carrie was such a hit (I find it depressing and too all-American for my taste) but it was the first of this genre and deserves respect for that if nothing else.

The Musical is actually a cleverly cut version of the story and falls somewhere between the musical Grease and high Opera. It is a weird conception but not unpleasant, certainly something to put on your I-pod and listen to on the bus to work (be warned though - if you do this you may find you like it). Gosh it was hard to confess that!

3.0 out of 5 stars Jumping on the bandwagon?, 9 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I will be honest I purchased this as a fan of almost everything Stephen King and frankly, it made me angry. Not because it milks an established cash cow but because it was a brilliantly written book which was frankly tedious to read. The writer is obviously intelligent, possessed of a good vocabulary and sense off pace. Their writing is a bit flowery but engaging and the writer is worth so much more than this and they know it. It focuses on one character from the mini-series Kingdom Hospital and tells a tale that really didn't need telling. If you watched the series you already know the denoument and don't need to know anything in this book. If you haven't seen the mini-series then perhaps you will enjoy this more than I did and will find the progression from literature to screen more satisfying and fulfilling?

This was written under a pseudonym - whoever you are you are a great writer so don't prostitute your obvious skills and abilities by involving yourself with something as crass and popularist as this work. You are good, believe in yourself and write something original!

OK, I may be an anorak but I have been a Stephen King Enthusiast since the seventies. I was aware that this was a rarity and something of a collectors item and I was aware that it was in German as a first language. However, the cover art is predominantly in English and I suspected that a worse case scenario was that I would have to watch it with English subtitles.

SILLY ME! It is all in German and does not have any dubbed or subtitled content so if you wish to complete a collection, buy this and don't bother to take it out of its packaging. Alternatively, it will provide a good excuse for attending those night-school classes that you have always promised yourself.

The content? it is possibly brilliant, possibly mediocre or frankly awful - I don't know, I don't speak any German and am not sad enough to sit through the film and try to put it together through the visuals alone. If YOU are, then good luck!
