Very very good quality for the price. Time will tell whether it is durable but it certainly feels robust

3.0 out of 5 stars Bitter sweet buy, 1 April 2016

Ok, it was only £398.00 for a guitar with solid spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, Grover butterbean tuners, solid mahonagy neck, ebony fretboard and bridge, Fishman pickup etc etc. Also has forward scalloped bracing and even looks identical to a Martin of a similar ilk. (Martin don't do a herringbone D18 as standard but if they did this is what a HD18V would look like.)

It's also not far off what it would sound like..

When it came, I was very disappointed to find it had been used, despite it sold as brand new. I was all for sending it back there and then. The film covering the pickguard had seen plenty of plectrum use and fret 1 had a level of indentation that can only be achieved by quite a bit of use. The strings were well worn too, and one had a sharp nick in it where an enthusiastic plectrum had battled with it. The back had brushed against rough clothing, needing polishing out too.

I decided to keep it though for one reason. My experience of guitars made in OEM factories in China is one of variable quality. Aside from the wear and tear, this had a true neck, no glue explosions inside, smooth edging and the frets were all seated ok. I decided it was easier to get this one right than to pot luck with a replacement.

The action was incredibly high. I reduced the neck bow slightly with the truss rod adjustment and took about 2mm off the (real bone) saddle. It's still a little too high for me but I will let an expert set it up finally because the nut needs a slight reduction in height and I know my limits! This setting up requirement is no criticism as guitars do need setting for the individual and far better for them to be supplied too high than too low.

I put some Elixir '012 strings on and set about playing it in.

It really does sound good, an almost identical sound to the D18 it is based on, but at a fraction of the price. The V neck is very comfortable and with the herringbone edging, looks and feels very similar to a Collings D2H (rosewood back and sides) which sell at over £3k. It is not as well finished as the Collings or Martin to be fair but it isn't far off. A non guitar enthusiast would struggle to say which cost almost ten times the price of the other.

If you know a bit about guitars and either can set up or get guitars set up, this is a no brainier for your collection. It looks, feels and almost sounds like the guitar it copies, but you feel less nervous using it on stage or in pubs and folk clubs. The sound cuts through, as a good "hog" should and although doesn't sustain too much, that can only improve with time given the materials.

I just wish Amazon hadn't fobbed me off with a used model pretending to be new. That in itself has driven me to complain.

Spigen Slim Armor Case with Air Cushion Corners for Apple iPhone 6/6S - Gunmetal
Price: £14.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 5 Dec. 2015
Really pleased with this case. It is rugged, slim and feels as if it is high quality.

The kickstand makes it a bedside alarm clock when charging it. The texture stops it being slippery in my hand and the hole at the bottom is large enough for all my plugs to fit without taking the case off.

Worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improved the sound quality, 13 April 2015

Turned up next day.

After ten mins with sandpaper, actually improved the tone of a new guitar that came with a cheap saddle. A review said get a tusq saddle so I did, and it really is better for this particular guitar.

I have tusq on two others from new, so know the brand.

Very very good. Dropped a star because they pop off if you try using them as a five string capo.

To be fair, they don't advertise as they can be used as such, but if they could, they would be perfect.

1.0 out of 5 stars Brass? Mine weren't.., 13 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
OK. The good news. They are heavier than plastic ones and so if you have a light bridge, they will make a difference to the bridge mass and may improve the sound. They are also rather cheap..

Now the reality. Once they arrived from China (three weeks) I noticed two things ;

A casting line across the top making them look like flat head screws.

Very shiny light gold finish, that does not go with any gold coloured machine heads I know of.

No problem, I thought. I will grind off (fettle?) the casting line and reveal the brass beneath, which will match the antique gold on my guitar.

THEY ARE STEEL NOT BRASS

Anybody want some dull steel bridge pins? They are after all heavier than plastic ones.

But much lighter than the ones I was led to believe I was purchasing. Amazon are selling goods that do not match the description.

This review is from: Korg RP-C1 Tuner (Electronics)
It works well, and has all eight notes (chromatic) so can be used for alternative tunings, (unlike the cheaper black version that is only good for EADGBE)

I reckon it is slightly more sensitive than say, a Snark and is not one to show a permanent green light, it always reckons you are on the verge of sharp or flat, and that is with a £3K guitar with close ratio machine heads. So, as long as it is mainly in the green, you are pitched alright.

If you don't keep your hand on the off button long enough, you can move it from 440 to one of the other pitch biases, so always a good idea to see which one is showing when you turn it on.

Another small issue is that it is fine if you sit and tune up, but stood on stage, you can't see it. (People without a beer belly may not have this issue..) and the 100mm dia suggested sound hole is not optional. I have a slightly smaller hole and it doesn't fit as snugly as in another guitar with 100mm. Also, a guitar with a large 150mm dis sound hole? No chance....

Good all the same and yes, it is permanently on one particular guitar and I have no hesitation in relying on it.

Fast delivery and matches the description. It comes in a little plastic pouch, the lettering is engraved on the gauge and it does what you need it to do.

At this price, it is possibly the best value one I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just buy these now. No others, 24 Mar. 2015
I have a fairy sized collection of guitars and three of them get played in folk clubs and gigs at least two or three times a week so need to sound good all the time.

With the cost of Elixir, and me rarely going a week without changing at least one set of strings, I am tempted to seek cheaper strings, even if changing more often.

Nothing comes close. I have effectively stopped looking and just buy Elixir. All the guitars from a Rainsong (bright and clear) to a rich deep Gibson via lots in between, these seem to be the best.
