This is a great 3 album package for a Katy Moffat fan. For me the truth is that I was a little disappointed by this as my hopes were high, particularly given Tom Russell's involvement as producer and co-writer of many of the songs. It's good, well-played, but overall bland, and very few of the songs stand out. this is again surprising considering the quality of the sidemen, including Andrew Hardin, Fats Kaplin, David Mansfield and Larry Campbell. Unfortunately it all falls a little flat for me.

Well this is an easy review to write as I am a very big Chuck Prophet fan, so of course the album's great!!(seriously). I haven't heard the original Waylon Jennings album, but this is all trademark Chuck Prophet with his drawling vocals and crackling guitar. All apparently recorded over 2 days when he and the band were inadvertently locked inside Closer Recording Studios in San Francisco in 2006.The playing overall is great, and includes Max Butler on pedal steel, mandolin, lap steel, Stephanie Finch on vocals, David Manning on fiddle...etc...Any Chuck Prophet admirer will want this.

This is some brilliant guitar playing, and it should be pointed out that this is an entirely instrumental album, so don't come here to listen to Tony Rice's vocals! The accompanying musicians on here are a virtual who's who of bluegrass including Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Vassar Clements, Bobby Hicks, Norman Blake, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe, Darol Anger ....etc.Great value

This is a typically great compilation from Doc and his son taken in all but one case from their early 1980's albums on Flying Fish records -"Red Rocking Chair"(1981)-"Doc and Merle Watson's Guitar Album"(1982) and "Watson Country"(1982).The guitar playing is always top class, and the accompanying musicians include Mark O'Connor Al Perkins and T.Michael Coleman. Worth buying

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent value, 28 Aug 2010

Well this is pretty much what you would expect from Martin Simpson. Superb guitar playing, and some great ensemble playing. The first half of the concert(7 songs)is Martin unaccompanied. Apart from the "prodigal son" tracks, you also get versions of "the ballad of sammy's bar", "I can't keep from crying sometimes" and "Love never dies".There then follows a surprisingly intersting 25 minute film about Martin's past, and his home town of Scunthorpe. Finally the second half of the concert brings on Andy Cutting on diatonic accordion, Andy Stewart on double bass and Kellie While on backing vocals. This time there are 2 tracks not on "Prodigal Son" "hiram's Tune" and a cover of the great Richard Thompson's "Strange Affair. (8 songs in total). So superb value for 7-99

This is an album of duets some of which are excellent. I bought the album for 2-97, so I couldn't go far wrong!!! but I wouldn't say it's worth too much more. It's essentially rock and roll/rockabilly with touches of pop and country. The only track which I personally didn't like is "Erin's seed" which is yet another "Hollywood" version of the irish-american past, similar in fact to some of Steve Earle's ramblings. He's actually on the album singing on a duet version of his own "Bible and a gun". Worth checking out.

This is something of a hit and miss affair by Lal Waterson's son Oliver Knight. It's a mixture of mostly his own compositions sung by different contributors. Personally my 2 favourite versions are by 2 of the least known singers namely Maria Gilhooley's "My Sweet Lullaby" and Barry Coope's "Summer Lightning". Otherwise there are 5 instrumentals and 5 more songs. Of these the stand out for me is Norma Waterson's "Once in a blue moon" whilst the weakest is Eliza Carthy's "Go from my window". So it's a mixed bag and perhaps only essential for admirers of the artists concerned.

Greg Brown inhabits the same space that Loudon Wainwright also fills. For me that is the absolutely highest echelon. So I'm obviously not much of a useful neutral critic!!! This is a great Greg Brown album backed as always over the last 20 odd years by the marvellous guitar of Bo Ramsey. Other contributors include Dave Jacques who has played with John Prine. Greg Brown has a rich, warm, wry voice, he writes some breathtakingly good melodies with intriguing and insightful lyrics and his backing musicians are always right on the button. What more can you expect!?! A must buy in my view

Mary Gauthier is one of the outstanding "alternative" country singers of the last 10 years. The first album by her that I bought was "Mercy Now" which is pretty close to perfect. I then bought "Between daylight and Dark" which doesn't reach the same heights, and lastly this compilation album "Genesis" which is excellent and well presented with a full lyric sheet. One of the stand-out tracks is "Sugar Cane" which I first came across on a Catie Curtis album although I prefer Mary's voice and version. Recommended

As ever this is a lovely reissue from Fledg'ling although it would have been even better with the lyrics included. The original album is an excellent "avant-garde" work, and this is now supplemented with the inclusion of a wonderful live bonus track. This is "Play with Fire" no less, with the magnificent Richard Thomson on lead vocals!!! and it's over 9 minutes long!!! Apart from this the album is simply essential since it includes one of the afore-mentioned Thompson's masterpieces in "Killing Jar"
