I like most of Rory Mcleod's albums but not this one!!! Admittedly it seems to be his first recorded effort, and does contain a few excellent tracks, or rather 2 in my opinion, "Hug you like a mountain" and "Divorcee blues".The rest of this double cd is well below par in my terms. It doesn't include the genuinely original melodies and instrumental playing which feature on Rory's other cds, but it does include, as ever, his "marxist" polemical stle which is at best naive, and at worst totally barking!!! Mind you he's still at it after 35 years, so you can't help but admire his unblinkered "socialism". I would recommend his albums like "travelling home" or "Mouth to mouth" as much better places to start

It's taken me over 20 years to reacquire this gem on cd but it certainly was worth it. There are only 2 criticisms which one can level at this work. Firstly it hasn't been remastered, and I'm sure it would benefit from a sympathetic and technically proficient engineer's work. Secondly, as with all Planxty's albums, the cd "booklet" is minimalist -no lyrics- no photos-etc....The music however is another story. This is part of the absolute peak of the Irish "folk" output of the 1970s. The singing courtesy of Andy Irvine and Christy Moore is flawless, and their musicianship combined with Donal Lunny and Liam O'Flynn is equally brilliant. An essential album in my view

Another Waterboys album has been given an excellent remastering and repackaging job. This reissue is well worth buying, and includes 12 "new" tracks on the bonus cd. That being said it corresponds generally to my overall view of Mike Scott's work. When he's good he's in the front rank, and most of the time he is very good. However there are almost invariably moments on his albums when he enters a "twee" neo -mystic area which he can carry off surprisingly well, but which can turn embarassing/bombastic.You have to roll with the punches!!!......

This a good value product. The sticks are about twice as long as a normal cotton bud, and will get into most tight/awkward places. My only quibble would be that the stick will snap occasionally if subjected to "average" stress

There's an excellent review up here already, and my contribution will be minimalist!!! I got this 5 cd box set new for 23-99 pounds from Amazon and at that price it's well worth getting. All the original albums come with extensive bonus tracks in a good quality cardboard box!!! In my view Robyn Hitchcock is occasionally sublime, generally very good, and sometimes a little fey. He's not quite in the top rank unlike his "heroes" Bob Dylan and the Incredible String Band, but he's certainly worth pursuing

This is a wonderful surprise. 2 John Prine performances stretching back to before he even recorded his eponymous debut. What's even more astonishing is how finely wrought these songs were already. There is virtually nothing to distinguish them from the studio recordings except the additional instrumental embellishments. On top of that John Prine already had such good material that these 1970 songs appeared over the course of his 3 original albums. The songs as ever are beautifully played and sung, and there is the added bonus of the contrast between the first cd which was recorded in August 1970 at WFMT studios and the second cd which is a live performance in november 1970 at the Fifth Peg in Chicago with the always affable John Prine sounding relaxed and enjoying himself with an already adoring public!!! Absolutely essential.

4.0 out of 5 stars great value, 18 Nov. 2011

Alejandro Escovedo appears to be little known or appreciated in Europe which is a shame, although not surprising as he doesn't fit into the standard boxes. His music, stretching back to the 1980s, is an unusual but very attractive mix of punk/ country/ alternative rock and balladry played by a variety of extremely good musicians including himself. The tracks on this very cheap 2 cd set come mainly from the albums he recorded for Rykodisc and Bloodshot records in the 1990s. It is no exaggeration to say that every track here ranges from good to particularly good!!! Recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars contrived, 18 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Most reviewers seem to have a natural bent towards their subjects, so non-positive reviews on Amazon are not too popular. So my view is that Jane Gardam's work has lost it's subtlety and incisiveness over the years. I found "The man in the wooden hat" over-contrived, too full of wildly improbable "coincidences", and with an over "arch" pattern of apparently predicting the future. I preferred her novels written in the 1970s and 1980s

The world of Captain Beefheart's live recordings is a murky one. There is a lot of stuff out there, and most is of very unreliable quality. This however is a most welcome exception. It's a recording of a live show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in 1980 and was professionally recorded by Dutch radio station VARA. The sound is top quality throughout including the Captain's very capable handling of a persistent heckler. The cd lasts 74 minutes, and the magnificent Magic Band here is Richard Midnight Hatsize Snyder, Robert Arthur Williams, Jeff Moris Tepper, Eric Drew Feldman and of course Don Van Vliet himself. There are 18 tracks including"Abba Zaba", "Hot Head", "Bat Chain Puller","Dropout Boogie" and "Big eyed Beans From Venus". Fantastic stuff. Highly recommended

I am a great admirer of the Watersons, of Lal Waterson and Norma Waterson, so perhaps I was expecting too much from this record which was released on Topic in 1977, and probably accurately reflects Topic's somewhat minimalist approach of the time i.e limited simple musical accompaniment, and a short playing time. This reissue includes 2 further bonus tracks and is certainly worth buying if available at a reasonable price, but I wouldn't put it in as high a class as much of their other work
