Irrationality: The enemy within
Irrationality: The enemy within
by Ben Goldacre
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Competent and readable, 11 May 2014

Most of us like to think we possess above-average intelligence (irrational in itself!), but the author demonstrates how we frequently make the most mundane decisions based on manifestly faulty reasoning; how, for example, we distort or ignore evidence that does not fit our preconceived notions. He recounts the celebrated MIlgram experiment, in which ordinary members of the public, motivated only by a misplaced sense of obedience, were induced to commit (or so they thought) to perpetrating appalling acts of cruelty against their fellow human beings. He explains the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Gambler's Fallacy. He shows the tremendous costs, human and financial, that ensue when our political and military decision makers make wrong decisions (I would have liked to have heard more about this aspect and to have suffered less from the statistical-mathematical passages, although the latter are mercifully few). Unlike surprisingly many people, he is decidedly for evidence and against intuition!

As a footnote to Amazon (who have made a bad decision here) the book is by STUART SUTHERLAND, late professor of psychology at the University of Sussex AND NOT BY BEN GOLDACRE, whose works are also brilliant but who only wrote the foreword on this occasion!

Niederegger Dark Chocolate Covered Marzipan Loaf 75 g (Pack of 2)
Niederegger Dark Chocolate Covered Marzipan Loaf 75 g (Pack of 2)

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, 12 April 2014

This is the Rolls-Royce of chocolate bars. Finely ground marzipan, coated with a thin layer of dark chocolate, the whole not as sweet as the British would make it. But there is no credible competition. This marzipan loaf is tastier than other forms. From Lübeck in north Germany, the world capital of marzipan! Best eaten chilled, cut into thin, translucent slices, with a cup of black Ceylon orange pekoe tea. Heaven! If you buy more than £10 worth you will get it postage free, i.e. at the same price as Tesco used to sell it -- only now they apparently dont stock this particular type. As I write Amazon too is out of stock. Amazon, how could you let your customers suffer such trembling withdrawal symptoms? Is nothing sacred?

The Faith Healers
The Faith Healers
by James Randi
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 25 Mar 2014

This review is from: The Faith Healers (Paperback)
I have a great deal of respect for James Randi: I like the way he determinedly pricks the bubbles of charlatans and tirelessly promotes rational thinking in a world that seems to be becoming obsessed by faith and belief and bored with rigorous scientific evidence. However, I was disappointed with this book. There is too much detail about exactly what Randi wrote to various quack medics and preachers and how many times they failed to reply, and too little in the way of structure, principles or overarching arguments. The distinguished scientist Carl Sagan describes the book in his foreword as "rambling" and this is accurate. Randi candidly admits to not having an academic background and I am afraid it shows.

It is well known that Epson products cost more than compatible brands. Their ink is particularly expensive. I used to think that it was absolutely not worth buying them. I have somewhat revised my opinion, having purchased a new Epson printer, with Epson inks.
The results of using Epson paper with Epson inks are extremely good. Together they provide the finished prints with that solidity, that fineness of detail, that professional quality, which isn't quite matched by others. If you are just running off some holiday snaps of Auntie Flo on the beach, then by all means buy cheap paper. If you want something that is to be framed and hang prominently on your dining-room wall, then you need Epson paper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Timely topic but too much jargon, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a book by a British economist lecturing at a university in the US who opposes current Western government austerity policies root and branch. It is published in the US but actually contains more material of interest to the European than to the American reader. In particular, its damning verdict on the euro is worth studying, because it comes from an author who remains convinced of the value of the European project in political terms.
In its racy, almost colloquial style, the book appears to be pitched at the general reader: it is very readable--but it is so peppered with jargon that is not always explained, that understanding, as opposed to reading, is rather more difficult. Krugman, a Nobel laureate in economics, demonstrates in his books on similar subjects that the use of a great deal of jargon is not necessary.
What is more, if you are going to try to impress with jargon like Soziale Marktwirtschaft and Wirtschaftswunder (describing the postwar German economy), then make sure that either you or your proofreader can spell these terms!

National Audubon Society Field Guide to Florida (National Audubon Society Regional Field Guides)
National Audubon Society Field Guide to Florida (National Audubon Society Regional Field Guides)
by Peter Alden
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact introduction, 12 May 2013

If you are visiting Florida as an ecotourist and dont want to cart a large number of expensive identification guides to the many classes of fauna and flora with you, this could be the book for you. It will tell you which wild flower or reptile, for example, you are most likely to have seen, rather than give you an exhaustive guide to all possibilities. It also has some good information on topics like the habitats of Florida. The print quality is excellent, which given the small size of the text and cramped layout, is very necessary. I am not sure I needed information on the night sky in Florida either. But for the general naturalist this is better value for money than the Traveller's Wildlife Guide to Florida by Sunquist et al.
If you specialise, for example, in herpetology, or ornithology, then, by itself, this book will be a complete waste of money. But in short: if you are, say, a birdwatcher, take a quality bird guide with you, plus this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this product, 23 Aug 2012

I had the misfortune to purchase this product and found that the simple-to-follow instructions, when followed, produce absolutely no result. No flashing light, no nothing. The thing remained as dead as a gravestone. Sadly I had left it too long between purchasing the product and using it, to send it back for a refund.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware!, 18 Mar 2012
I have purchased identical batteries, same Kodak brand, same packaging, made in China, for a similar crazily cheap price. Admittedly NOT FROM THE SAME SELLER. But mine just last a few days, even in something requiring as little power as a clock. I suspect mine are fake Kodak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 29 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When I started buying batteries through Amazon, I thought: they are so much cheaper than the same products at even the cheapest supermarkets that they are probably counterfeit, the packaging laboriously copied at some sweatshop in China. You know the kind of thing: instal it in your portable CD player and literally 5 minutes later, it's dead. Whilst not an expert, I have to say, this does not happen with this product (I use it for a cat scarer, it would not be suitable for a CD player). So in short, good value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solidly built mouse, 15 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After purchasing other mice which were either too small or responded too slowly or were suspiciously lightweight, at last I have a good one. It's a reasonable size: 12cm x 6.5cm, important information not always provided by Amazon ! It feels solid and above all, it responds quickly and reacts quickly to clicks which feel precise. The central rotating wheel turns a bit noisily and roughly, but given the reasonable price, this is a minor niggle. Now I know why friends recommend a logitech mouse.
