Homecomings
Homecomings
by Donald Paterson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book of 2014, 8 July 2014
This review is from: Homecomings (Paperback)
We chose this book to read for our bookgroup mainly because of the title and 2014 being Scotland's year of Homecoming. From the very beginning I loved the setting, living as I do on the Moray coastline and being able to visualise the rugged landscape. The character of Hugh in whose voice the book is written is gentle and yet forthright. Paterson draws us in with the somewhat erratic style of Hugh's writings that take us all the way from the small village of Croval where he and his mother live, to Canada and on to America. Drawn together by the finder of Hugh's writings, Rona Macpherson, a bookseller from Elgin in the present time, the book makes a facinating read. Although fictional, we learn so much about the time of the clearances and the first settlers across the Ocean. A thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end. Thank you Mr Paterson.

Great follow up from Gordon Ferris with plenty of twists and turns to keep your interest up throughout. If you like your characters and heroes flawed then there's plenty from the dark side of the street to get your teeth stuck into.

For someone who has limited knowledge of America and politics, George Packers book was both engrossing and stimulating to me. If you read one more book before the end of the year let it be this one. A sobering reflection on life and the impact greed has on our lives and what it does to us, from the highest to the lowest and the fallout from those policies that keep real people trapped in never ending cycles of poverty. There is hope though and you just might find it written in the lives of those featured in these pages.

A fast paced thriller with plenty of twists to keep you interested all the way through. Dan Brown himself would have been particularly proud I'm sure.

As haunting as the terrain it describes. In a post apocalypse world is there any hope for us? Marcel Theroux takes us on a journey through the bleak landscape of a lost life with whispers of redemption.
