1.0 out of 5 stars Tawdry, 13 Jun. 2014
Sex Crimes!!! Satanic Rituals!!!!! Lesbians!!!!! Cheap tawdry Sensationalism!!!!!

I am finding this very clunky and it is hard to get a handle on the characters, which is not made easier by chapters where the identity of the protagonists is not revealed.

I have not read any other works by this author. Some commentators think the others are better. I won't find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very powerful book, 17 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Borderliners (Kindle Edition)
I am surprised that there are so few reviews for this difficult and troubling book. Having read a number of Hoeg's books, I would see this as his finest work.

It's not easy, it's painful but i have read it a number of times and always find it a new and fresh experience. I read it first as a young man back in the 90s and most recently, as a father. Each time it's different.

Hoeg is straining to get to the truth of difficult matters such as time and power particuklarly when exercised between adults and children. Sometimes, it seems taht the words available to him are insufficient. But that only serves to underline the seriousness with which he is struggling to get to the truth.

It's not fun, but it is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 23 Jun. 2012
This review is from: The Edge Of Heaven (Audio CD)
Unbelievable that no-one else has reviewed this yet and its been out for years. Absoluteley brilliant. Lucas' guitar playing is so complex and melodic. The two singers are perfectly in tune with the material. It is one of the best albums I ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully crafted collection of songs, 28 May 2012

This review is from: The Seven Valleys (Audio CD)
There are lots of far more learned reviews of this album on amazon.com than I can write. However, I will just say that this is a thoughtful, beautifully crafted collection of songs. The vocals are beautiful, and the percussion is amazing in a middle-eastern style. I don't usually like the term "world music", but given that these songs originate from places as far afield as Portugal, Hungary and Turkey, it's probably valid here! This won't be to everyone's taste but if you like acoustic music with a non-western feel, this won't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars £2000?, 15 May 2012
This review is from: Morning Star (Audio CD)
It's great but it's not worth £2000!!! Is that a typo or something?

Beautiful soaring vocals from the women and really exciting fiddle playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Really PG, 15 May 2012

This is a fantastic film, but, word of warning, It's not really PG in the usual sense of the word. Certainly 12 and maybe 15. Watch it before letting the kids see it and then make your own mind up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyably gloomy, 4 April 2012

This review is from: Dead Waters (MP3 Download)
This is full of gothic German gloom. Plenty of anger. Very electronic and not at all folky, unlike my usual preferences. Definitely preferable to her Hagalaz Runedance phase where all the songs sounded the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wahooooooooo!, 14 Mar. 2012

My daughter writes:

This is absouloutely my favourit book. It is the third in the sereies (I have read all of them)and is great! I would probably recommend it to people 9 and up. But 8 year olds just try it out, that is a rough scale. It is all about a girl called Emily and how she goes through all the books saving Olympus or helping Pegasus. Pegasus is a myth, he is a white, stallion with wings and is very powerful. Kate O'Hearn brings in all the roman gods and goddesses giving them personalities. It is really interesting and although I am not keen on non - fiction books this gives a bit of half history in a fun way. That note is for teachers and parents! All the characters are really cool and seem life like when you get in to the flow of the book, especially the gods. You really feel for Emily and her friends and understand their troubles. This book is great for adults too although you might not think it. At the moment 2 adults would like to borrow it from me, so try it out! The book has so many different things in. History, myth, adventure, romance, monsters, animals and much more. By the way, if you are thinking of buying this book, unless you already have, I would advise reading the first two first. You would still get alot out of it but with some bits you need the knowledge from the other two. If that's the case the first book is called: The Flame of Olympas and the second is called: The fight for Olympas. So READ it!!!! You will really love it, I do. If you are not keen on calm, relaxing type of books, don't be fooled. This book is filled with adventure from page 1. With some pretty nasty people inside too! So, if your looking for a book this is it. I rated it 5 stars(wow), that means I love it. Voila!
See what amazing story lurks behind the front cover...

3.0 out of 5 stars Jumps The Shark, 5 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book has some good ideas. The characters are interesting and there is a story. However the climax definitely jumps the shark. I don't want to give anything away but it becomes like the worst kind of horror story where everything is made explicit and all subtlety and nuance is lost.
