5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, although you are not sure why........., 25 Jun 2014

This is a very interesting book. It is just so plausible, and yet, so weird. It is a testament to the power of the writing that reality is suspended until you put the book down, then you think "Really?". Great first novel, look forward to the next.

Surprisingly, for a box set, each of the books was well written and a good read. So, load it onto your kindle and you won't notice if you get delayed at the airport.

Take this on holiday. It is cheerful, funny and quite interesting too. This one was free, and it worked, as I am just off to buy the next one!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, 25 Jun 2014

The half of this book that I managed to plough through made me very sad, for all the wrong reasons. It obviously was a labour of love for the author, but it is just so bad. Apart from the many and various errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar (note to authors, get your *first* novel proofread - otherwise no one will ever buy the second), the protagonists were unconvincing, the dialogue stilted and the storyline hijacked of digression. Sorry Emma, you need to try harder.

Just love, love, love this series. Start at the beginning (1 is free at the moment) and read them all, it is worth it. I have a low boredom threshold, and I didn't get bored.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great plot, but unconvincing characters, 4 Mar 2014

The plot is absolutely fascinating, and some of the book, particularly the description of life during the war, were outstanding. The lead detective was described as being brilliant, but nothing really gave credence to that description. That rather spoiled the whole book for me, I kept waiting for flashes of inspiration that never came.

I am afraid I gave up on this one. It wasn't really awful, just a whole load of nothing very much.

Well written and interesting. I've read the whole series to date now, and I love the way that each book is complete in itself, but the characters and their situations develop and change through the series. It is like reading the journal of a real life, albeit one much more exciting and dangerous that most of us would encounter.

For me, one of the best things about this book and the series is that you are never brought up short by poor grammar, spelling errors or complete misuse of words.

This book is just brilliant, so much so I've been messaging friends on FB to tell them to read it. It is engaging from the very first line to the very last word and takes you on a fascinating journey. Absolutely beautifully written and edited, one of those books where everything is just right and you are sorry when it ends.

Free kindle books are like panning for gold - there's an awful lot of mud to find a speck of gold. Well, this book is a nugget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and makes you think, 9 Aug 2013

This was a really good read. Absolutely fascinating look at other cultures and other life views. Extremely well written, shame about the few typos and spelling mistakes, they were pretty glaring in contrast to the all round quality of the book.
