Two CD's of classic tracks from the 60's and 70's. The second one has some absolute killers on it and would set you back a small fortune in vinyl. Buy it or you are nut's!

A great book on the old Taff Vale Railway packed with black and white photographs going back to the 1800's. It covers the lines the stations, signal, boxes and other feats of railway engineering. I managed to buy a nice used copy for 10, but I understand that the material for this book forms a big chunk of the information contained in a recent three volume set on the Taff Vale Railway by the same author. Perhaps that may be worth a look if you cannot get hold of a copy of this.

Another book in this series by Michael Hale. packed full of photos and well worth the 10 I paid for a nice used copy. Covers the lines running into Newport and Pontypool and is a very good window on what has now sadly disappeared from South Wales and the Marches with regards to the steam railway.

Having run a sound system on and off for the last 40 years I grabbed this book thinking it was going to be a history of the sound system as I knew it in the 70's, but was sadly disappointed. The book is well written and certainly covers the rise of the sound system as an integral part of the reggae world on both sides of the Atlantic, but often rambles on too much into the politics of this period. There is some good information and stories even if they appear to be slightly biased towards the authors own sound and a few he obviously likes. He is obviously not from Stoke Newington or Tottenham. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who was not around during the 70's when most of this was happening, but if you are an old bugger like me you will be occasionally shaking your head and saying "oh yeah".

Another compilation of 50 classic tracks from the Trojan catalogue. There are plenty of tunes to warrant the outlay of less than the 10 I paid for a used copy. However, not up to there usual standards in my opinion with the selection of tracks. One or two many mediocre tracks that are better forgotten on this 3 x CD set!

Although it looks a little dated it was a nice window into life in JA in the late 60's early 70's with a nice reggae sound track featuring a number of classic tunes. Well worth a view if you can pick up the DVD at a budget price.

There have already been a number of reviews of this film. It is a bit dated but one of the great costume dramas that probably could not be made today purely because of the numbers of extras needed. Today it would all be done with CGI on computers which makes this film all the more remarkable as there were no special effects used in this film apart from the use of slow motion cameras during the epic charge of the British Union Brigade led by the Royal Scots Greys, captured in all it's glory in this film and probably the highpoint of the film. If you have not seen it before, or have not seen it for sometime, it is well worth searching out on DVD as you can pick up a copy for a few pounds.

Ridley Scott's first big film. A masterpiece of costume drama set in the Napoleonic Wars that traces the lives of two Hussars who fight a number of duels whenever they meet. Some of them are quite brutal and shows that duelling was not an elegant pastime as often portrayed in other Hollywood offerings. The two main characters are played by Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel who both give splendid performances along with a number of British actors who pop up throughout the film such as Edward Fox and Albert Finney. Ridley Scott captures the period with his use of filming locations and houses in France and the costumes and acting made this a truely enjoyable film to watch.
