As someone who doesnt know the work of these musicians well, besides a smattering of Porcupine Tree i would like to say how great this album is. Brooding, beautiful, melodic, simple, complex, dark, light, unpredictable & so refreshing :-D At times it makes me think of King Crimson of various decades but there are many other influences within this album.

I heared this once on mp3 then bought the cd :-)Great album for a late evening with friends where the music interupts the conversation with elegant twists & turns and ambient shimmering :-)

Treat yourself

Great to hear Mr McLaughlin back on form. Jazz/funk/Fusion/Rock in abundance :-) Industrial Zen was the last album that made me sit up.
I'm lucky enough to of seen this band live at The Barbican London November last year :-) McLaughlin, Husband, M'bappe & Borot in a groove :-D Buy it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Tunnel Vision!, 16 Mar 2012
This author has written a thought provoking book about human history but sadly due to his Christian bias/reality tunnel is unable to truly be objective with his opinions no matter how intriguing the facts. He goes out of his way to include biblical facts into his research as if the bible was a complete unaltered & not translated document based on facts rather than primitive mans thoughts on myth/legend. He reveres the Hebrew God as the defining being in our universe & Jesus as the entity's son. These ideas alone shatter any credibility the author could have regarding historical research and ability to look at evidence and fathom any real knowledge available to be learnt. If you are looking for knowledge about mans true origins here you will be greatly disappointed but if like Mr Gray you are a devout Christian and want to hear evolution theories trashed and Biblical ideas supported at every turn this is the book for you!

Bootsy Collins as usual creates a funky, soul, groovalicious album referencing Hendrix, James Brown to name but a few! Always entertaining, always getting your feet tapping, on the one of course :-) If you like Parliament, Funkadelic and of course Bootsy's own thang,You will love it :-@

1.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity!?, 6 Nov 2010
This review is from: Metallic Spheres (Audio CD)
Dave Gilmour and the Orb : Both have had great musical moments and this should of been one of them. Gilmour is still one of the great british guitarists but given the uninspired backing from the Orb its sounds more like a samples pastiche of some interesting guitar riffs and mostly random tuneless electronica. Vocals are badly tuned to the tracks and they do not meld well with everything else that's going on, at times jarring completely with the audio surroundings. Very much a missed opportunity :-(

2.0 out of 5 stars Another cash in!, 18 Mar 2010
This review is from: Valleys of Neptune (Audio CD)
As a complete Hendrix nut i have bought everything with Jimi's name on over the years. This album has Hendrix working over ideas that didn't quite work out and roughs of later retitled tunes being scratched over in the studio. There are obvious familiar tunes but sadly not the best versions of those either :-(

If anyone comes to Hendrix's music starting with this rehash they might be put off buying the essential Jimi recordings such as Are You Experienced/Electric Lady Land/Axis Bold as Love and also the great Hendrix Concerts!

Electric Ladyland
Axis: Bold As Love
Are You Experienced
The Concerts

I'm sure Jimi wouldn't have released these versions himself! Sadly those responsible for these releases have only one motive and that's profit :-(

There are many live concerts that could be remastered judging by the number of dodgy bootlegs that have surfaced over the last four decades, why not officially release them ??

Stick to the great albums and ignore the tweaked/remixed (80's backing tracks added to 60's mix)versions. If Hendrix wanted them released they would already be out there :-)

"When I die just keep playing the records" but maybe not this one :-(

I saw Tal playing for Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts and was so blown away how good she was I went out and bought this cd. For her first release this album is astonishing! Imagine your favourite fusion then add a fresh young original dynamic. Think Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, and so many more.... She is without a doubt one of the best bass players of many generations. In her twenties now who knows what heights she will reach. Great Stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jefff Beck Live the only way to see him!, 12 Sep 2008

This won't be available for long! A great dvds worth of Jeff Beck and Jennifer Batten (Guitar & guitar synth)/Randy Hope Taylor (Bass) /Steve Alexander (Drums). A superb gig recorded Live in Japan at the International Forum 1999. If you attended this tour you know how great this band were (I was at the London Shepherds Bush gig).
Live drum & bass assaulted with pure progrock raunch n' roll.
Beck plays with his usual mastery over the 18 tracks provided here incuding classics like 'Start Cycle' & 'Blue Wind' and more recent tunes such as Declan (beautiful). My reason for only giving 4 stars is the fact that the dvd is 4:3 aspect ratio and the video has signs of pixelation and low frame rate noticable when there is fast movement on screen. I wish Jeff Beck would realise just how much people want to own dvds of his concerts. Then he might release some official dvds. That being said if you're a fan of probably one of the most unique guitarists in the world then this recording doesn't dissapoint. Get one while its HOT!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Guitar synth ? Please No!, 12 Jun 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Floating Point (Audio CD)
I bought this album partially due to the 5 star ratings posted for this album and also because I attended John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension at Londons Barbican Centre May 2008. The Live concert was McLaughlin doing what he does best - play great jazz guitar with a superb band! Sadly the cd is a rather damp guitar synth riddled musical effort the band are great but McLaughlin himself uses awful synth voices all the way through. The same material with traditional guitar sounds would of been a huge improvement but it's too late for 'Floating Point'. I own almost everything he has produced over the last 4 decades and I can say this will be ignored by the hardcore Mclaughlin fans! Please stick to real guitar sounds JOHN and leave the synth noises for the keyboard players :-)
The downloadable Official Pirate of J Mclaughlin & 4th Dimension is a truly great album but sadly isn't planned for cd release :-(
