Men Of Air: The Doomed Youth Of Bomber Command (Bomber War Trilogy 2)
Men Of Air: The Doomed Youth Of Bomber Command (Bomber War Trilogy 2)
by Kevin Wilson
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great, 7 July 2015
This book is a good introduction to the activities of Bomber Command throughout the Second World War and is brought to life by hundreds of first hand accounts of the action. The trouble is that the majority of these accounts were gained first-hand by the author at the time of his research and so they are all 70-plus year old accounts which suffer from the passage of time and don't really add that much of interest to the narrative. In addition many of the accounts feel that they have been just shoehorned in for the sake of it and the narrative worked to fit around what the author happened to have. It's not all bad though as there are several archival sources which add more authenticity to proceedings, as well as many interesting individual stories. The book also loses its way towards the end and contains a fair bit of twaddle.

So, a thoroughly researched book, but perhaps a bit too lengthy. I found it heavy going and took me ages to get through and was certainly glad to get to the end..

Quite possibly the worst film ever made.

3.0 out of 5 stars 1 DVD & 1 CD edition review, 11 Mar. 2014
Ok, fairly big Jeff Buckley fan here. The DVD is interesting, I prefer watching live performances to just listening to them and Jeff was such an intense and intriguing performer. Compare these to the Chicago DVD where he was in a somewhat strange mood.

The CD is tracks 1-12 of the DVD and claims to be 'remastered'. It doesn't sound great, in fact some of it sounds ****. Very murky and bassy, and doesn't really serve a purpose.

So... buy if you are a hardcore fan. If not, stick to Grace, the full Sin-e album and the Chicago DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 31 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Megson - Live (MP3 Download)
Megson are simply brilliant and this album showcases a typical example of their live shows. I give it 5 stars for performance and sound quality, but unfortunately I do have 2 gripes: the songs apparently appear in a different order to which they were recorded and the audience sound has been almost completely edited out. The former is a minor matter but the audience makes a good live album a great live album - check out The Waifs' A Brief History...

East Midlands Airport in Wartime
East Midlands Airport in Wartime
by Geoff Wilkes
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, and with a happy ending!, 30 Dec. 2013
This little book by the late Geoff Wilkes really is excellent. Wilkes had a knack for writing and this book poignantly details life at RAF Castle Donington - now swallowed up by East Midlands Airport - and the minutiae of service life: boredom, love, uncertainty, living conditions etc etc. There is precious little left of RAF Castle Donington to see today so this book is the closest you'll get to being there in its heyday. Like many of these kind of publications it could have benefited from a copy editor giving it the once-over but that doesn't detract from the detail. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!, 29 Mar. 2013
I am no pro pianist, but I mainly bought this for the transcription of Valentine Moon. At least you get the full song (unlike the others) but it's over simplified and misses out the solo! Avoid...

Tales from the Hanging Court (Hodder Arnold Publication)
Tales from the Hanging Court (Hodder Arnold Publication)

3.0 out of 5 stars History from below?, 19 Sept. 2012
This is a strange book. On one hand it's a useful resource for crime and punishment and the Old Bailey - Hitchcock and Shoemaker are leading eighteenth century historians so you can rely on their vast knowledge. But then, it goes downhill. This book details many trials from the OBP, but as Hitchcock and Shoemaker point out, these are only the most interesting ones. Thus, we get stories about people like Princess Serophena and descriptions of human anatomy parts that were too colourful for even the original OBP stenographers. To say it is biased would be rather an understatement. Yes, it is history from below, but it is very selective. Having made extensive use of the OBP website, there are plenty of trials which are of interest and this book just looks all too much like a nice little cash in.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice little cash in, 19 July 2012
This review is from: Catch-Flame! (Audio CD)
Weller is at his best when he plays live and this album is no exception. Unfortunately any on stage banter has been edited out and it's all very workmanlike. I can't help feeling that this was just an 'easy' or 'lazy' album for Weller to make to bide his time. Nonetheless, quality is great and highly recommended.

Simply mind blowing. The versions of Supersonic and Hello taken from Earls Court are probably the best they've ever recorded with Liam's voice sounding perfect and Noel's Epiphone Riviera sounding absolutely epic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid........., 19 Sept. 2011
I am on chapter 4 of this book and so far it has been complete twaddle. The author's personal opinions are forcefully thrust upon the reader which as another reviewer has noted adds to the glum pessimism of the book. The author's obsession, yes OBSESSION, with the test pilot Bill Waterton is also somewhat strange. I've no idea who James Hamilton-Paterson is but I will be steering well clear of his books in the future.
