5.0 out of 5 stars Basically a best of Gothic Rock CD, 13 May 2001
Both CDs contain gothic rock (the older, punkier goth) and contains all the principal gothic rock bands, and highly memorable tracks. Some silly tracks (eg "Comatozze" by Alien Sex Fiend), some dance floor fillers ("A way" by Bolshoi, "Baby turns blu" by Virgin Prunes), some punky tracks (Specimen, Bauhaus), some very moody tracks ("Trees come down" by Fields o.t. Nephilim, Christian Death also "Spiritual Cramp" by Rozz Williams, Big Electric Cat). Also some female gothic rock such as the excellent "Belladona and Aconite" by Inkubus Sukkubus, Die Laughing's "Safe Little World". A very good album and a perfect introduction to all those obscure old goth bands. No Sisters of Mercy on this album - everything here is punkier.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Black Metal CD. Diverse and powerful., 13 May 2001
This review is from: Blackend Volume Five (Audio CD)
This double CD contains several of my favorite Black Metal tracks. The high speed and hardcore nature of Black Metal is preserved along with more modern machine-augmented drumming patterns and electronic "classical". It is really a very inspiring album. There is more sampling on this album than other Blackend compilations. Multiple tracks contain harsh and choral female backing "vocals", which is a modern trend in Black Metal. Altogether it is the most "listenable" Black Metal album I have listened to, probably the best one to introduce new people to the genre, or for general playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best black metal available on 2 cds!, 13 May 2001
This review is from: Blackend Vol.4 (Audio CD)
"A poignant scenario of death" by Myrkskog is one of my all time favorite Black Metal tracks; starting with deep mummering lyrics and chanting. Although this album features more electronic sounds and electronic pan sounds, there are still old style Black MEtal tracks such as Emporer, Enslaved and Usurper. A few tracks towards the end, notably "Fatherland" by Ancient Rites, have a Death Metal influence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good black metal compilation, 13 May 2001
This review is from: Blackend 3 (Audio CD)
The opening tracks (Emporer, Hecate Enthroned, Enthroned) are very strong, hardcore black metal. Generally the whole album is like that. There are a few dubious tracks such as "I am your flash" by In the Woods, which is death metal, quite poor. There are a selection of more modern Black Metal tracks. The Blackend compilations are all very high quality for money, being 2cds. There are some very memorable and well produced tracks on this one, especially at the end of CD2, which ends with a trio of very well written and hard tracks (The Serpent, Tartoros and Old Mans Child)

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect summary of old style black metal, 13 May 2001
This review is from: Blackend (Audio CD)
Old style black metal, eg Emperor and Darkthrone, is best experienced with this album, a collection of the best and most memorable tracks. The Black Metal genre contains a lot of poor quality albums and music, but starting with this album you can seek out the better bands. Of the Blackend compilation (1 through 5 at present) Blackend 1 is the oldest and most pure black metal, with little "electronic" sounds or samples. If you don't know what Scandanavian Black Metal is (as opposed to modern European or American BM) then start here.
