4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for blokes., 3 Aug 2010
Can't speak for you ladies out there, but if you like reading, adventure, sci-fi, futuristic concepts, gadgets, fighting and humour- buy this book. It delivers all of the previous in spades!!! Have read Excession, Player of Games, Fearsum Endjinn and Against A Dark Background also. I really loved Excession, but Consider Phlebas has more characters, and a wider breadth of adventure. Not saying its better, but offers the reader something slightly different. FYI, I didn't think Against A Dark Background was much good.

I only bought it for the Timmy! badge, which adds a touch of class to any clothing you attach it to, even my tweed geography teachers' jacket

1.0 out of 5 stars Very slow and dull, 28 Jun 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dark Water [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
Yes, I'm afraid this film was very slow and dull, right up to the point where NOTHING HAPPENS! Cerebral? No. Quirky and Japanese? Only in the worst possible way. Scary? Nope. 98 minutes of your life you'll never get back? You bet. Get some poor idiot who has seen it to tell you what happens in a scary voice. That will be scarier than the actual film.

1.0 out of 5 stars do not buy this piece of rubbish, 27 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
it worked well for the first 5 or 6 times, then the vac feature decided to: 1) Jam when sucking wet leaves 2) Clog the vac tube when sucking wet leaves (or blosson) 3) The bag detaches itself, spraying you and your garden with either wet, mulched leaves or moist mulched blossom or moist mulched grass. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, ITS A PAIN IN THE BACKSIDE

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard work to begin with, 10 Jan 2010
This review is from: Feersum Endjinn (Paperback)
What a read! This is a book which really makes you think. You have to. It's not just an 'entertain me while I read you' book, you will be puzzling away at the story and concepts long after you put it down! Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hang on, you're in for a real ride..., 31 Mar 2009
From the first page you know you are in for something different. Ellroy has a very distinctive style that is a real tour de force of showing, not telling the reader what is goingh on. The plot just keeps getting better and better.
While I respect the fact that plenty of people love Patricia Cornwell-type novels, this book demontrates just how insubstantial the formulaic crime novel has become. Treat yourself and your senses to a real challenge and a real story.

Seen Ong Bak? If yes, then you don't need to see this very mediocre boredom-fest.

If not, see Ong Bak, not this. I just saved you money!!!!

I expected noting from the story, which I got. I expected plenty of brilliant action. There was a fair bit of action, but it was just all very samey. It just didn't come anywhere close to the action the other reviewers suggested would be here.

They must all be teenage boys with no real point of reference for this genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst book I have ever read!, 18 Jan 2009
This review is from: Dragon (Paperback)
This book could not be more cheesey if it was printed on thinly sliced cheddar. I actually had to put the book down after the author introduced a cameo character with his own name. What a shocker. If you want action and adventure, read The Death Zone by Matt Dickinson or The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS. The Death Zone: Climbing Everest Through the Killer StormThe Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea (Stranger Than...)

1.0 out of 5 stars OVER-PRODUCED, CONTRIVED RUBBISH, 20 Dec 2008
This review is from: Day & Age (Audio CD)
Oh dear. I liked the Hot Fuss album. I thought I would like this, but it was like listening to the worst of Elton John collaborating with that shocking bunch that did the remake of Do They Know Its Christmas, TRACK AFTER TRACK. I did enjoy one thing about it though; taking it down to the garage and shooting it to smithereens with my mate Rob.

1.0 out of 5 stars you will be cheated!!!, 28 May 2008
My mum (bless her), bought this book without knowing the focus of the recipes. It should have been titled "How to treat the British cooking public like idiots and make more money at the same time." Evidently, 'Cheat!' was a shorter title. Stick to getting drunk and slurring over the PA system at footy matches Delia. I've lost all respect for you.
