5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful entertainment. It is technically brilliant, 5 Jan. 2016

Absolutely wonderful entertainment. It is technically brilliant, but you don't really notice that as the atmosphere of the whole film is totally convincing within its own parameters. Script, direction, acting and everything were wonderful. Can't recommend it highly enough.

2.0 out of 5 stars Done on the cheap, 19 Oct. 2014
This review is from: The Secret of Kells (DVD)
I was very disappointed. I assumed that the animation would be in the style of the Book of Kells, but it was all very cheaply done - rather like the 'limited animation' Hanna Barbera TV work of the 1950s. The characters are drawn in crude geometric shapes - tubular or spherical monks, a cat with a triangular head. The style might have worked better for book illustration than animation. The story was so dull I gave up after half-an-hour. I don't know what a wood fairy is doing in a story about one of the greatest Christian books ever produced. The opening credits are amazing. There seem to have been about 20 organisations in different countries working on this. The expression about 'too many cooks' comes to mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harmless and funny, 20 Sept. 2014

Great fun and completely harmless. I had read some bad reviews, so I wasn't expecting much, but it is really funny and absurd. Recommended.

Hard to follow and not worth the effort. I don't know who it is aimed at. I gave up after 20 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Wilde studies, 7 Aug. 2014

A brilliant piece of writing in which the author has discovered the Holy Grail of Wilde studies - a fresh approach has hasn't been done to death a hundred times. Very well researched and elegantly written.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too slow, 7 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Stranger By the Lake (DVD)
Moody and atmospheric but very slow and - dare one say it - just a teeny bit pretentious. It might have worked better as a 30-minute short.

Stage Blood: Five tempestuous years in the early life of the National Theatre
by Michael Blakemore

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent piece of theatre history, 28 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As other reviewers have said, this book is unputdownable. I read the last third in one sitting because I just had to know how the story ends. The account of the last days of the Olivier regime and the changes wrought by Peter Hall is all the more powerful for being written with the calmness that comes from forty years of thinking about them. Blakemore is a big name himself in theatre, and he is writing about some of the biggest of them all - from Olivier downwards. Given the importance of these formative years at the NT, which to a large extent set a pattern for subsidised companies ever since, this is a major work of theatre history. The fact that it is beautifully written is a huge added bonus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keats died of boredom, 9 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Bright Star (DVD)
Bright Star is so deathly dull, it makes watching paint dry look like an engrossing experience. I fast forwarded through most of the second half, hoping for some scenes of Rome. In fact, there is one brief shot of the Spanish Steps. As if the script weren't boring enough, Ben Wishaw manages to drain the poetry of its beauty whenever he spouts it. Biopics about poets are always going to be difficult, given the subject matter, but this must be one of the worst.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 24 Dec. 2013
This is a superb piece of film-making as well as being an excellent way to introduce children to some of the tales from classical mythology. I must have been nine when I first saw this, and the thrill of the fight with the skeletons has never left me! As other people have commented, technically films have advanced a lot, but the genius of Ray Harryhausen and the terrific pace of the story will ensure that this film is never bettered.
