5.0 out of 5 stars A great little product, 16 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this for cleaning my new Ipad, as a few days using a touchscreen convinced me that I was going to need some kind of cleaner for it. What mainly convinced me to try this cleaner was the price - it was considerably cheaper than some of the other products out there.

But it really works. The screen comes up as new. In fact, I can use it to clean my touchscreen, my laptop screen and even my glasses. All come up clean and dry without any smears. I'll certainly be buying this product again.

1.0 out of 5 stars No director's commentary?, 29 Aug. 2012
Sorry, but Disney are asking us to fork out £15.99 for a film that doesn't even have the director's commentary? The commentary that the U.S. is getting the week after?

Nope. I will wait until they bring out a blu-ray disc which has the *standard* extras.

The film itself is great. I just strongly object to not getting a commentary - so Disney can put an extra language on the disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book in the middle of the series, 10 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's an excellent book, but it's very much the middle of the series (currently projected as five books, so this is the mid-point): I found myself having to stop part way, go back, and re-read the first two volumes. Don't just leap in if you read the previous books last year, because there's very little recap and in a couple of places briefly explained but important events have happened to characters in-between the volumes.

Once I'd re-read vols. 1 and 2, I could see just how good vol. 3 is. It has to carry a lot of already existing characters, introduce a couple of new ones and - well, that would be spoilers. It does all this very cleverly - by the end of the volume we've not only progressed, we're in a darker, much more dangerous place.

I'm a bit surprised by the reviewer complaining about Arvid (the thief). Firstly, it's one of the basic premises of the series that in this world there are human saints and good gods, and they all actively aid their champions. Personally, I vastly prefer this to stories where powerful evil gods are coming out of the woodwork, but all the good gods seem to have retired to Dunmanifestin.

Secondly, to me, Arvid was the character I wanted to see much more of, and the character who had by far the most character development. It's true that development is mostly internal - he does get some exciting fight scenes, but not as many as others - but of all those characters 'chosen to fight for Good' he's the most interesting.

Because, unlike the others, he doesn't start as a good guy (and so far is only part-way there). He's a highly skilled and rather smug thief and assassin, born into the Thieves Guild, who begins the series unable to imagine that he might ever be anything else. This volume is where he really starts to become someone who might turn out to be a hero.

It's going to feel like a long wait for volume 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars The memoir by the WW2 leader who saw it all, 12 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Gathering Storm is the first book in Churchill's six volume history of WW2.

For a while this was the definitive history of WW2: no longer. Churchill had to keep some things secret (such as Ultra and Bletchley Park) when he wrote this, so there are gaps. But it is the only personal account by any of the 'Big Five' leaders in that war and as such it's still a very important source for anyone reading up on this area of history.

In this first volume, Churchill covers the Interwar years from his own viewpoint. He became convinced very early on that Germany was set on a path that could end in another World War. While it's common to portray him as 'a voice crying in the wilderness', his access to high level government information (shown in this volume) makes it obvious that many of the political leaders and civil servants had a much higher regard for him and his views than they could afford to publicly express.

The second part covers the early war months, where Churchill was in charge of the Admiralty and the sea war - the most active theatre of operations in the 'Phoney War' period. The volume ends when Chamberlain's government falls and Churchill becomes Prime Minister.

As well as being an M.P., Churchill was in the 1920's and 1930's a well-regarded writer and popular historian. While his style is of his time, the book is both logically presented and very well written. It also contains a large amount of Churchill's own letters and memoranda, so it's full of primary source material.

I do have one minor niggle with the Kindle edition: the proof reading wasn't very good. There are more than a few typographic errors - which at times became a bit irritating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diagrams on the kindle, 16 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Escape the Diet Trap (Paperback)
A couple of people are having problem with the diagrams on the Kindle edition, so here are the instructions.

You need to move the cursor down to the chart (use the 5 way button). You should then get a small magnifying glass symbol, indicating that you can enlarge the diagram. Click the 5-way and the diagram will enlarge - though it may take a few seconds.

To return to the text, hit 'back', or 'next page'. If all this still doesn't work, you may have a faulty copy.

The book itself (aside from handling the diagrams) is very good. Clearly written and well researched - it's easy to see that Dr Britta has broadly based his ideas around the medical literature. It doesn't give you a set of recipes - what it tries to do is make you understand what foods are good for you, what will help you lose weight, and what won't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the new supply teacher, 4 Dec. 2009

Fantastic little book for the secondary teacher starting supply, with information on the secondary subject areas. The ideas in this book help you survive those moments of 'someone's just gone to get the cover work'. They also give you the information/appropriate web sites/ideas to do emergency lesson planning for subjects you haven't studied since you were a teenager.

Very firmly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb reference, 26 July 2009

It's a reference book rather than a recipe book. And it's a lifesaver for those moments when you're thinking 'do courgettes freeze well?' (The answer is yes, but first slice and then blanch them for one minute in boiling water).

Arranged alphabetically for quick look-up, this has a well-earned place on my kitchen bookshelf.

Not kidding about shock and water resistant. This little drive survived a full wash cycle when I accidentally left it in my trouser pocket. All the data was intact, and it still works perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but very American, 23 Feb. 2008
This is an American book, so some of the banking details don't apply. The references to God are also much more frequent than most British readers would think relevant in a book about finance (I'm fairly religious myself, but even so I thought there were a few sermons too many). That said, if you're starting to worry about repaying student loans, or that the credit card minimum payments are creeping up and up, it's a very good, practical book. It suggests a good way of tracking your income, planning for the unexpected expense, and of paying off your current debts quickly.

If you're in serious financial trouble, try Jerrold Mundis's 'How to get out of debt'. If you're just starting to get worried, try this book.
