A great find as this first novel is a piece of creative fantasy that unravels at considerable speed and keeps the reader glued to its ofttimes cruel and gruesome tale. I loved the naming of Port Lupus and the three kingdoms surrounding it.
This book's story is dominated by phases of the moon in the mid-15th century and their werewolf effects which are described in chilling detail. Can't wait to complete the trilogy with The Oracle and The Beast. Well done Mr.Tombs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely 5 stars!, 23 Oct. 2011
This review is from: The Horse at the Gates (Paperback)
Another gripping thriller from the pen of D C Alden. The characters in The Horse at the Gates are well described and almost
become part of one's family during the days and nights of reading. This is twenty first century stuff that acknowledges
what could happen to a country that failed to maintain its vigilance.
The Orwellian type backdrop all add to the tension and intrigue in this second and exciting novel from D C Alden.
If you are looking for an original and thrilling page turner then look no further.
Can't wait for the next one!

Wow, what a great first novel from D.C. Alden.

Heaven (and Allah) forbid his gripping story ever comes true!

Over 600 pages of pure suspense take us around the globe in trans-continental jumps that read like the best of Forsyth, Grisham and McNabb.

General Mousa is admirably described as the loyal soldier and confidante of the Ayatollah.

I enjoyed the careful protection of Harry Beecham and the surprising method of evacuating the US Ambassador.

I took a shine to Kirsty and prayed for her survival!

This is a great plot that should have readers and Europe at large, on their toes, and keep them there.
