4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful but too modern, 15 Feb 2006
I think this film is too modern. I didnt like many historic mistakes in this film. For instance : Lizzy's hairdress (her untressed hair, nobody wears the bonnet), authers of the film dont know the main rules of english old decorum ,though in the book these details are described propely - how they must walk on the street, how to communicate with unknown persons, how to eat..., figures of girls are awful (they are too thin for that time), I didnt like playing, I think in this version there are too much love and attractive (sometimes heros were almost kissing!)and none pride and prejudice.
Though I liked nature in the film, the work with the cam was increadible. I think the film is very beautiful but not close to the book alas. I advise to buy the virsion with Colin Firth.

5.0 out of 5 stars I only dont understand one thing why there is no continue, 2 Nov 2005
This review is from: The Star of Kazan (Paperback)
It's a great book for girl (and not only). Eva Ibbotson is a talented writer, she has many funny books to enjoy like "Great chost rescue", "Wich, wich" etc... But this book doesn't look these ones. Very kind, very sensible charming story about a girl Annika, who lives in "gold city" Vienna , city of music, city of glory. Annika was adopted when was very little, but she lives happily with her new mother and her friends. She loves her life, but sometimes dreams her real mother to find her. And one day unknown beautiful luxurious woman knocks to the door of Annika's house.... And what will Annika chose: her old simple life in Vienna, where she worked on the kitchen and kept the house, where she made with her old family Christmas dinner, where she played with friends in Vienna central park and went on the birthday to the Horse show... or the new life in German castle, where she will have servants.
It's a mystery romance, what secrets does Annika keep you could know if read this book. I really recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the book which got many -many prizes, 4 Oct 2005
I like this novel very much. I must say that this book was a "winner" of the most famous awards in children literature and got Andersen' gold medal. This book also has Newbery Medal, Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. This book was translated into many languages and was published in many counties, in cultures as different as Iran and Israel, Brazil and Bulgaria, China and Czechoslovakia.
This book is good for 10-14 y.o., an exciting story with lots of adventures.
This story based on the true event, when the young girl was left upon an island near the coast of Southern California. She lived there alone for 18 years.
Author also writes The King's Fifth , Sing down the moon and

5.0 out of 5 stars the book must to read, 4 Oct 2005
This review is from: Agnes Cecilia (Hardcover)
Maria Gripe is a famous children writer, in Swiss where she comes from, she is well-known and beloved just as Astrid Lindgren. She is one of several children writers who was a winner of Andersen Awards (some of others winners were A.Lindgren, T. Jansson and etc).
This is a story of a girl who came to live in a new place, but in some time she felt smth strange. She was hearing steps in one of the room. She knew that "it" didn't want to hurt her, but what mystery was hidden in her new home?
Some of her other books are the stories about Elvis Karlsson, little Swiss boy; magic fairy-tale with dwarves, old lady-wizard and clever raven, who can speak and see with only one eye (many years ago he had both eyes, one - to see only good and kind, and other - to see in a deep dark, but seeing the darkness is dangerous and once he lost this eye. From this time he could see only kindness). This story called "Children of glassmaker", the author said that this tale was born by itself through Swiss hills and rivers. Also I like 4 stories about one young girl called "The shadow on the bench"

I apologize for my style, cos English is not my native-born language, but I wanted to tell a little about this great children writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing book, 17 Sep 2005
This review is from: King Matt the First (Paperback)
I like this book, it's one of the most famous children book in Poland. It's a story about little boy who had to become a king in spite of his early age. He doesn't want to rule the country, he wants just to be a kid. But he did it and did it in his own way never forgetting being a child.
This book opens for everyone the magic world of childhood, like Winnie the Pooh or Alice in Wonderland. All these books have smth in common : the authors didn't forget what means to be a child!
The book contains many adventures , for inst. Matiusch takes part in the war or he is going to Africa to visit cannibals.
There are many other interesting books written in the East Europe. It's L. Kern and his story about dog Ferdinand the Great, or Kiritze who wrote a charming and sensible tale about children from Cherry-tree street who decided to be knights, or J. Bjechva and his kind wizard Mr Spot (pan Kljaksa) and his fairy Academy.

4.0 out of 5 stars the book of 4 stars, 26 Aug 2005
This review is from: Midnight (Hardcover)
the books of J. Wilson are very popular though i have no idia why? it's an easy-going story about a girl and her brother. The girl feels lonely and her best friends are elves from her favorite book. She reads about them all the time and the real world is not so good for her as her magic one. Once she got a friend but soon she had to know that her friend used her to meet with her brother. She found out it when saw them kissing and laughing about her. She is very upset, she run away but siddenly she discover an old family secret: her brother was aduped. When the truth is known her life is changing, she is getting closer to her brother, she finds new friends/
It's a simple short story without any deep sense, and maybe it cannot be read for little children cos there are too many not very beautiful views of life, for instant the part when the grand shows how she doent love the boy cos he is adupted.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutelly very good, 12 July 2005
it's strange becouse i thought that all great children authors had lived somewhen in long past. But i was wrong and i have realised it when i bought this book. it's 5 little stories about children and a fairy world, very well written , the author is able to speak with children on their own language. the story is symple but not ordinary, interesting and u never know the ending.
i absolutelly recommemd this book, it reminds chronicle of narnia or alice in wonderland.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good for the young writer, 30 April 2005
Eragon
I wouldn't say that it's the best book I ever read. But no doubt the book is very good written , full of images , allegories. For the book written by 15 y.o. boy it's sure very very good .
Sometimes the book reminds too much of Tolkin and some other famous young reader's book.
The book is about 15 y.o. boy who lived in a poor mountain village; he is a hunter and sometimes a farmer. His family (uncle and brother) are trying to survive with their farm though they don't have money enough. The life of Eragon, the boy, is ordinary, he works hard and cares for his uncle .
But once he found an egg of dragon. Soon he understood that it was a very dangerous discovery . Many magic cruel creatures want to get an egg. One day they killed boy's uncle. Eragon began a long travel with his new friend and a teacher of magic and of course with the dragon who called Sappfire to revenge .
