4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Selection of Useful Parts, 10 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am very happy with this purchase, after spending a fair amount of time finding circuits and 'Sketches' to make use of them, and explore what can be done with the Mega board and the additional parts which form this product pack. Unfortunately, for someone like me exploring those capabilities, the set came without any parts list or other labelling of parts, so I had to spend some time online just finding out exactly what I had got. Worse than this, the downloadable 'manual' referred to in the description, did not appear to correspond exactly with the parts provided, and the 'Arduino' board in those project instructions were for a 'Uno' board, not the Mega 2560.

After spending further time online, including making more detailed searches of the SainSmart website, I did find a document that fitted the parts supplied better. Luckily too, there are vast quantities of free information about the Arduino in many places across the Web. I also have some past experience with microcontrollers, so it didn't prove too steep a learning curve for me so far, but for absolute beginners - the 'Starters' referred to in the description - these shortcoming in information could lead to mistakes and frustration, and perhaps even damage to the board. These problems could be addressed and dealt with fairly easily by the supplier, I think, which would add the extra star to my rating. Overall, a good collection of parts to explore with, at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genuine Article, 6 April 2014

Having in the past bought and used some cheaper alternatives to the Panasonic originals, for several earlier Lumix cameras, I know from experience that you generally get what you pay for in terms of stored charge and long term life. These batteries are not cheap, but should completely conform with the original specification in every respect, and I am expecting them to give long and reliable service.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical starting manual packed with 'how-to' information., 11 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great starting point giving entry into the wonderful world of Arduino. If you are the kind of person who wants to make things that can do amazing things in the real world, then Arduino is for you, and this book takes you from the basics through a whole series of fascinating projects. Even if you don't build many of them, you will be able to see the exciting possibilities within the grasp of the hobbyist.

Whether just interested in the Arduino, or having already bought a kit, buy this book! It is well written, and presents its information clearly. Worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting autobiography of a US Navy pilot, 23 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Flying Low (Kindle Edition)
A fascinating chance to look at the politics and practicalities that determined this particular pilot's career in the early days of the development of aircraft carrier operations. An easy read being mostly anecdotal, but sometimes lacking the depth which would have told you more about the man, and how things that negatively affected his career impacted upon his life. Impressive, but a bit too 2-dimensional for my reading taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid and safe, but has a drawback or two., 9 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The stepladder is solidly built, but not over-heavy, considering that robust design and construction, however, the round side rails nearest the user are left free to rotate, and I find that a bit disconcerting when using the steps. The other thing that continually catches me out when using them the very strange tread spacing, with the bottom tread MUCH closer to the floor than is expected, compared to the other three spacings, tread to tread and tread to platform. When coming down the steps, the effect of this is a tendency to 'jar' the user's neck when the back foot meets the floor earlier than expected - it has caught me out several times now. The stepladder could have been usefully made a little taller, extending the 'legs' by just a few centimetres to raise the bottom step to eliminate this 'foible'. A little extra cost to cover the material needed would have been worth it (in my opinion). Still, a well-made product that will last a long time and give good service.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good when it's listening, bad when it goes 'deaf'., 14 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This All-in-One is a very frustrating mixture of good and bad. It has good copy/scan functions, things which don't rely on network communications, but has occasionally been temperamental when used as a shared network printer, in my personal experience after just a few weeks of ownership.

The package comes with installation software that is disgracefully long-winded, 'messy' and confusing to use, with error messages that basically tell you nothing about their causes. The printer comes with a paper manual that is light on info to aid any serious trouble shooting, so my first installations on several networked printers, and in some cases subsequently necessary re-installations, were found to be neither quick nor particularly easy.

On the plus side, printouts are clear and quickly printed and the scanner and supplied scan software seem to work well, as does the offline copying function. I didn't need the FAX function and I haven't tried it. I cannot yet comment upon running costs, although as usual, a full set of the larger-size print cartridges costs almost as much as the printer, although they are available individually, so I guess it will depend very strongly on how you use the printer.

It's too early for me to really condemn this printer as bad, but I've had it long enough to feel less than delighted with it this far. Given the opportunity to rethink this purchase, I would probably look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vanished Wizard, 30 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A great album in the original vinyl, but this MP3 version, as others have noted, is missing 'Pinball Wizard', a truly massive omission in my view. I believe this should either be put right by adding it to the MP3 album, or at least its omission made a little more obvious in the top-of-page description.

Disappointing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written fun, 12 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Coffin Dodgers (Kindle Edition)
I really enjoyed this book, which had me laughing out loud between more dramatic sections where the outcome was hard to guess. The book is set in some future time when various technological improvements have taken place, but human fertility is catastrophically reduced, effectively dividing society between the elderly majority and a somewhat sparser and poorer younger generation.

Three friends, Amy, Matt and Dave, all work at the same casino complex and spend much of their after-work free time together. The relationships between them generate well-judged descriptions of the comedy outcomes that ensue, which kept me well entertained from the beginning to the end of the book. Then an accident suffered by Matt, which points to serious criminal activities going on behind the scenes, gets the trio's attention. Collecting enough evidence to get the overworked police involved is a task that these unlikely amateur sleuths enthusiastically embark upon, being heavy on optimism but light on competence.

A well-written book with good situations and characters that please. An entertaining and often hilarious read. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good clear explanations of a complicated subject, 3 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After a working life which had occasionally involved me with electronics at a level which hadn't demanded too deep an understanding of the design principles, I was looking for a book that would let me now get involved as a hobbyist, allowing me to modify existing published circuits, or hopefully, to even design my own. I've usually found the Dummies series of books to be very well written and comprehensive enough, and this one hasn't disappointed me in any way.

It's an excellent introduction to the subject, or as an aid to clarifying the details of what you already (nearly) know. Its style doesn't demand too much, unlike many other books on electronics that I have looked at, and one or two that I actually own. It's easy to read, and the explanations of what can be quite complex principles are as clear as they can be, I think. The book doesn't skim over too much of the detail, and when it needs to it warns that further detail exists, but is beyond its scope.

Introductions to the principles for making design calculations may seem intrusive to some readers, but is necessary to know about if you want to design even the simplest circuits and have them work after you build them. If you just want to understand the principles, detailed understanding of the equations can be skipped unless/until you need them. Good value. Recommended.
