5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on a relatively new and expanding area of art, 8 Jan. 2012
Brilliant, comprehensive resource. The layout of the pages is very engaging, a very good balance of photos and text, and the text is efficient and not waffling, which is something rare in art books today, there is either no writing to give proper information on concepts or intentions behind a piece or pages of analysis that doesn't actually say anything . An UNBEATABLE overview of this specific area of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant resource to get the creative juices flowing (well, if you like reading of course), 8 Jan. 2012
I'm an art student and I found this book great, it's huge so it is safe to say it will have something for everyone, the subjects are really varied and interesting. It definitely got me thinking and all the passages are relatively short, it's a good all rounder.
Can't give it enough praise, possibly not good for in depth research about one topic, it is a quite generalised selection but definitely a must read for art students to dip in and out of.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected from the description, 8 Jan. 2012
The language is extremely heavy going, which you may argue comes from the subject but I have read around this subject before (specifically 'neuroaesthetics') and I found the book not useful in exploring the subject, it only has a chapter on the visual arts and it is heavily referenced to the point were the text do not flow at all, making for a very tedious experience.
It didn't hit any interesting subjects within the topic either, I would recommend turning to anything by Semir Zeki, specifically 'art and the brain' and V.S. Ramachandran, whom also has video lectures online about ' the neurology of aesthetics'.
The book has a few illustrations and the introductory sections to certain chapters are interesting but overall not what I was looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but as someone else mentions.., 8 Jan. 2012
There are loads of photos and the book is a lot larger than I had thought, but as the previous reviewer states, the back binding of the book is extremely weak and broke quite easily. Not what you would expect from such an expensive book.
But this is the only problem and maybe that the book isn't very text heavy but that depends on what you want from this book.
